341ml bottle, a single refugee from the current Big Rock mixed-pack. Now Big Rock are the 'Barley Masters', are they? Maybe in a 'recondite' sense - I keed.
This beer pours a crystal clear, medium golden amber colour, with two broad fingers of frothy, foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves a bit of sea-spray lace around the glass as it gently abates.
It smells of biscuity, bready caramel malt, some mild field honey, and leafy, earthy, and grassy hops - not too shabby. The taste is toasted bread, barely buttered biscuits, honeyed pit fruit, a hint of warming spices, and earthy, leafy hops.
The bubbles are fairly restrained, just duly supportive, the body a decent medium weight, and generically smooth. It finishes off-dry, the biscuity, hoppy character still lingering, suggesting that this may indeed have the legs to span the spartan wooden tables of lore.
An approachable and agreeably flavourful marzen from Big Rock - sure, why not? They've been upping their game of late with the Brewmasters program, and while there have more than a few misses, you eventually get a hit - I could see happily drinking steins of this while munching on pretzels and ogling the local dirndls.

Big Rock ... An Alberta fixture that may have saved us from macro mediocrity in this province but that nevertheless underwhelms when it comes to true craftsmanship. Could it be that these guys are stepping up their game lately? This offering and a few others (e.g., Monkey's Fist) give the beer geek hope. The marzen member of the stable pours the usual ruddy amber for the style, just a few notches from pale lager, and emits a very sweet malty aroma that recalls corn flakes and mellow fruit. The palate is malt forward, like crispy breading and toast but tempered a bit by a fruity musk like melon and weedy vegetal notes. Overall a good balance of sweet and grainy, with some hop spice but underwhelming in this regard. Nevertheless, a worthy edition to the brewery's "family jewels" pack and it won't make you think that you were kicked there. Big Rock just might be sorting things out, although 2014's release schedule looks ambitious enough to fail.

341ml bottle.
Appearance - Pours a gold/pale copper colour with two fingers of foamy white head.
Smell - Honey, bready malts, grass/straw... aromas are similar to macro lager.
Taste - Lots of bready, sweet malts. Very little hops presence happening in here.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall - Nothing really wows me about this marzen. Malt profile is in full force, but where are the hops? Some bitterness would balance this out nicely.

341ml bottle poured into pint glass 19/9/13
A clear golden yellow saturated with tiny bubbles, two fingers of foam has good retention falling to a thick film and leaving a few random spots of lace
S honey, dry corn flakes, faint noble notes with a little spice and hay and some fruit I can't place and has some macro lager hiding in the background
T much like the smell with a little more spice and loads of malt, much better then the nose as its lacking the macro notes I was picking up, tastes like the style should
M medium bodied, not quite the level of carbonation I was expecting after looking at it but still a healthy amount, malty finish with a faint metallic aspect lingering
O not a bad version of the style, nose isn't quite there but enjoyable beer nonetheless
I'm not blown away or anything like that but I'm getting some faint hope for Big Rock, decent beer that I'd drink again if in front of me
