Can - pours a murky orange-gold with a smallish white sticky cap. Aromas are rather faint ( this may be the age of the can and its temperature storage or perhaps the result of long aging) you get faint wisps of pine, earthyness, woody tones and some boiled cereal notes. The flavor however, really opens up with some big maltiness flooding the palate up front then a wash of complexity of esters and phenols; pine, pit fruit, grape skin sourness, some funky woodsy mustiness... long dry finish with increasing bittering and spiciness with fusel warming at the end. A unique brew to be sure but not really suited for sessioning.

Deep copper body, hazy; egg shell white head, very thick with sticky lacing, and strong retention.
On the nose, first getting orange, lush pine, pineapple, apricot. It's clean, fresh, fruity, and later the yeast funk becomes more prominent.
Taste is mildly tart and strongly musty, with lemon peel pucker in the finish - very dry. Tangy and funky all over the place, it certainly delivers on it's promise with woody and yeasty notes at the forefront. Medium body and light carbonation. The finish is that fruity tartness like you sucked on the pit of a stone fruit.

I found this brew super interesting, a unique beer with lot's of different things going on, and flavours are pure. Try it if you're down with the funk!

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. Purchased from the LCBO for just under $5 CDN per can.

Appearance - Moderately hazy dark golden color. An elegant finger of fluffy and dense off-white head sits on top and stays awhile. Lots of carbonation and little clarity.

Smell - Some earthiness, dark fruits and lots and lots of yeast. Some grapes (which comes from the wooden barrel) and a little wood directly. Certainly different.

Taste - Light flavors, fairly bitter, some wood and grape before finishing on the yeasty side of things. Not bitter per se, but there is a lack of sweetness that enhances the wood.

Mouthfeel - Light bodied, good carbonation and despite some more intense flavors on the back end finishes with an absence of feel.

Overall - An intriguing and very different beer, haven't really had anything like it. The cost is high but glad to see it in cans, this may increase accessibility, but somehow I think if there's one (or few) styles that people don't mind being in a bomber, this would be it.

This is a good beer. It tastes like wine and like beer at the same time if that's possible. The label also says Oak Foeder Beer and I'm not entirely sure what exactly that is.
