Formerly White Wizard
White Wizard is our take on the “white” beers revived by Pierre Celis in the 1960’s, a wheat beer that is pale in color and naturally cloudy. It is a spiced ale using coriander and Florida orange peel to add a citrus crispiness that makes it a refreshing and drinkable ale. There is a light hop finish to add to the drinkability of this beer.

Barrel of Monks Brewing "The Wizard"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle "BOTTLED ON 03/30/2022". Sampled on 06/14/2022.
$2.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: It looks like a Belgian witbier so there's that. It's maybe a little bit darker than most but that's OK. Unfortunately the head doesn't seem to be holding up too well. The aroma is sweetish with wheaty malt and a touch of orange, some bubblegum, and some mild woody spiciness and herbs. All is good so far so let's taste it... it's malty and sweet but also a touch acidic with notes of apple, pear, orange, clove, and a woody spiciness from the coriander seed. A moderate to median bitterness balances it along with the natural acidity from the yeast and despite the sweetness of the malt it finishes mainly dry with just a dollop of honey-sweet malt quickly fading to leave behind some lingering orange, woody spiciness, and herbal character. In the mouth it's medium-light in body and crisp. The label states that it's "flavorful, yet crisp and refreshing" and I couldn't agree more.

Cloudy gold appearance with a small white head and scant lacing. Pleasant zesty, spicy aroma highlighted by orange and a bit o honey. Starts out with wheat on the palate with a nice grainy texture, before falling back on the citrus and herbal hop characteristics. Aftertaste is tart and spicy. Well carbonated, medium-to-light bodied mouthfeel. A refreshing, well made wit.

The pour is orange with some sediment in the bottom. The taste is orange, white pepper, wheat, faint sour, & coriander. Cheers! B
