At Weyerbacher we've created a Winter Ale that is a must for any malty beer lover. Winner of a Silver Medal in the 1998 World Beer Championships, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is brewed with deep-roasted chocolate malt. The taste predominates with a warm, roasty flavor, balanced out with a slightly dry finish. It's smooth but not cloying, with a warming belt of alcohol.

Dark brown in color with very little light seepage through the body of this beer. There's a fingernail of beige resting on top. I smell caramel, nutmeg, and perhaps cinnamon. I taste plenty of caramel and dark malt. The mouth is slightly chewy and warm.

From old, undated notes. Poured from the bottle.

Dark brown; ruby in the light.

Nice egg-white head; strong lace.

Dark bread & slight spice in the nose. Christmas vibe.

Thin mouthfeel.

Must, metal & slight spice taste; bread & yeast. Not as unappealing as that sounds, but far from inviting. A miss for me.

This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a mostly dark brown color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about thirty seconds leaving some light stringy lacing sliding here and there. The smell had some light sweet prune, light roasty nuts and sweet brown sugar with a light breadiness. The taste was mainly sweet malty taking the roasty nutty part to lighten a bit. A light sweet prune aftertaste is there that lead to a semi - sweet / dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was pretty mild and light. I get it, it’s okay even if past it’s due date a bit. Overall, though I had it past it’s prime, I’d say it’s still worthy of having again.

$1.85 a bottle in Manhattan.

Toasty, with a dunkel malt backbone and some brown bread & caramel flavour bouncing around.

Toasted Malt, Nuts, Perfumy. Mint?Dark Brown color, Small head. Slight bitter aftertaste is pleasant and has hints of nuts/vegetables/ woodinessweak carbonation, but crisp. Almost a tonic/quinine quality. Intersting beer. Not great, but fun. A lot going on.

Might be that the wind chill is about zero, but this one was just right. Bitter and warming. At 5.6% it had me wishing I had a fire place to sit in front of and knock a few of these back. Definitely worth a try.

12 oz bottle poured into pint glass.

L - medium dark brown color with brown highlights. Light comes through but not too much. Two finger head with nice lacing down the glass. Layer of foam on top with a nice ring around the edge.

S - Aroma is easy to pick up in the pint glass. Dark malts with hints of dried fruit and dark chocolate. Slight yeast character.

T - dark and nutty taste. dry but not bitter. Dark chocolate taste but kind of watered down. Not too "dark" and no robustness.

F - Smooth and easy drinking. No strong finish but dry. Very light and clean.

O - good not but great. Not familiar with English brown ales too much but I was expecting a bit more chocolate character. It does have some stugots to it, which I can't argue. I think 3/5 is a pretty good score. Much love and respect for Weyerbacher, cheers!
