golden yellow, the haziness of it only served to magnify the shine it gave off. Some light sediment in the bottle, but that was from me, as I like it. A towering head of white foam at least four inches high,

Lots of grains here with a touch of yeast in the aroma. Light banana and lemon. touches of grass and even the slightest bit of grape. light, and full of flavor, light notes of yeast and wheat, some light fruit backed in as well. Nice hints of peach and a touch of wine like alcohol, but very light and more of a subtle nice surprise then anything else. The flavor was good, and at times effortless. The finish was dry; almost a champagne like dryness to it with a long lasting flavor of grass

2005 vintage.

Pours a hazy, golden orange with a 1-finger, off-white head that quickly falls to a cover. Contains a lot of floaties.

The smell is honey, a bit of alcohol and just a hint of oak.

The taste is white wine-like with noticeable alcohol, some bourbon, honey and a sharpness on the tip of my tongue that may be due to the alcohol.

Mouthfeel is medium to full with adequate carbonation with a slightly dry finish.

Overall: Probably past it's prime by a year or two. There is some bourbon and maybe, some oak but most every thing has mellowed and blended except for the alcohol. Guess I'm a little surprised at the alcohol presence after so long.

Pours a solid/bright golden color with a two finger white head. The head dissipated pretty rapidly, which is expected because of the ABV.

Aromas of honey and sweet malts, some Beligan yeats notes as well. The oakiness is barely present. Smells a little like white grape wine.

The taste starts off with some sugary/white white flavors but then the alcohol shows up a little. Finishes with a little more honey sweetness. I think this beer is good but a little too much like a white white and the flavors dont totally work together and seem to fight with one another.

Beer starts out thick and solid and still finishes fairly dry because of the oak aging presumabley. Definitely a sipper, kinda hard to finish actually.

This is a weak example of a summer, after-dinner, sitting around sort of beer.

Pours a beautiful dark golden color, with a nice inch high collar of white head. I get some oak on the nose, along with yeast, tropical fruit and sweet malt. On the palate, there is a somewhat funk, vinuous, sour note, which contrasts nicely with the bourbon, vanilla and coconut. An excellent example of barrel aging.

A lonely survivor from a nearly year-ago trade with my favorite Jerseyite, beerloco. Nobody who sends me that much Weyerbacher can be anything but a good guy!

Sad to see that this, along with one of my all-time favorites Blasphemy, no longer in production. Weird, or perhaps unique, pour, all fizzy orange with no head to speak of, almost like pop. Nose is sweet & every so slightly tart.

Prophecy has a bit of schizo going on, perhaps due to its age. The bourbon aging is vanishingly perceptible, only because I know it's there can I catch a glimpse on the tongue. The tripel has been tamed & toned, the alcohol has smoothed & mellowed over whatever time this has been sitting around. The oak comes out on top, along with the fading sweetness of candied sugar...but along with the oak is the very beginnings of tartness, like a sour that was just released yesterday (prematurely). I suspect that much longer & the contamination would overwhelm this brew; right now it just adds another interesting undertow to a beer with several of them. Great complexity in this bottle, some intended, others clearly an accident!

However, complexity doesn't necessarily bring greatness along for the ride, & that's the case here. Very good beer that doesn't quite crack into the excellent range. I would have liked to tipple this when Weyerbacher was cranking it out fresh for comparison; I bet it was killer.

For those who still have bottles, I'd consume these sooner rather than later.

2005 bottling; tasted 2009

Appearance: Pours a hazy apricot color with a very modest head that quickly becomes a bubbly ringlet; leaves a bit of splashy lace behind

Smell: Candi sugar sweetness with strong overtones of vanilla and bourbon

Taste: Caramel, sweet candi sugar and over-ripe peach flavors up front; the vanilla and bourbon elements arrive at mid-palate in a big way; after the swallow, the boozy bourbon flavors dominate, leaving the tripel in the dust, although still discernable

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; significant warmth in the gullet

Drinkability: The bourbon barrel aging and the tripel don't really work together for me, but this is an interesting experiment; the sweetness of the tripel and the vanilla from the bourbon make it a bit difficult to consume in quantity

This poured a hazy straw color with a bit of white head. It smelled like lemon and caramel and funky straw and bready yeast, with some white grapes and green apple and vanilla. It tasted much like it smelled, dominated by a funky straw and bready yeast, along with lemon and grape and apple and vanilla. It was slightly thick with some carbonation, and had a smooth aftertaste. Overall this was a strange beer. I'm not sure if I liked the smell or flavor, but it was at least fairly balanced. It had what seemed like a refined character, but at the same time, it seemed very raw and coarse. Perplexing. It had nice body too, and hid the alcohol well. Not as much oak as I was expecting, with more funky flavors instead. Wild ale drinkers might enjoy this one, but it would really have to grow on me.

So, for my 666th review, I thought I would do something "religious". I figured, why not go after Prophecy, so here it is. rerereview

Pours a dark golden color with a small white head. Slight chill haze going on but otherwise, not bad looking.

Aroma is full of oak and bourbon type aromas. Slight sweet and spicy yeatiness is present as well but this one seems to be about the alcohol and oak.

Not really digging the flavor here. Sweet, boozy, cloying. I like the oak and bourbon aspect but the sweetness is areal turnoff. Not a whole lot of hop bitterness with belgian candi sugar and caramel malt leading the way in all regards.

Boozy and alcoholic. A sipper for sure. Not really into this one. Well, review number 666 is out of the way. Lookout 1000!

Live review. Poured from a bomber purchased at Lena's Beverage in Painesville, Ohio a few weeks ago for $7.99. Not a bad price. This is the barrel aged version of one of my highest rated beers, the Merry Monks. Poured into my clean, clear Piraat glass.

A Translucent straw body with 1 cm head which dissipates into a ring around the top of the beer within 2 minutes. There is visible sediment in the bottle but also after I poured it there is significant yeast sediment (from the bottle conditioning no doubt) floating in my glass which is very cool. This is THE look of a tripel and it cannot be improved.

S That awesome malt sweetness that I love about Merry Monks with a wood backdrop. I am really looking forward to this one which is my favorite style anyway.

T Well the malt sweetness is certainly there and I can also taste the barrel aged aspect of it. The barrel aged taste is certainly a "woody" taste of something like a burbon. I cannot help but compare it to its non barrel aged version, the Merry Monks. It is not as candy sweet as the MM, deriving a tinge of burbon which is a tad harsh, bitter.

M Full with big malt, some carbonation and the high ABV. There is also a welcome syrupy quality that lingers into the aftertaste. The sweet nectar of a well made tripel.

D Good with continued inviting sweet malt taste (as you would expect from a tripel) but not the unbelievable drinkability of the Merry Monks.

Notes: This is a high quality tripel for sure but I will likely stick with the MM. Weyerbacher continues to impress and they brew some of my favorite beers.

Bottle: Poured a bright clear yellow color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of bourbon is dominating with some sweet malt also easily noticeable. Taste is a mix between some bourbon with some sweet malt. All fruity eater or spicy yeast notes are overwhelmed by the bourbon but I still thought it was an enjoyable mix and it wasn't too cloying overall. Full body with some great carbonation and some alcohol is noticeable.

Pours a golden orange with a off white colored collar. Plenty of tiny bubbles can be seen racing to the top of the liquid. There are traces of lacing left behind after finishing my glass.

What an interesting aroma. The barrel aging has changed this beer a good amount. The fruit and sweetness are initially noted. Comes off smelling of raspberry, apple and pear, but the sweetness, which was too much in Merry Monks is slightly blunted by the hints of wood and vanilla. Much improved.

Tasting reveals an initial fruity sweetness that is reigned in midway towards an earthy grassy mustiness. Finishes with a slick pronounced bitterness.

The carbonation is less than your typical Belgian, but still above average. The rock candy provides that unreal light airiness. Very drinkable with the alcohol missing, but be careful as this one still packs a punch!

A: Bronze with a white head, very little retention or lace.

S: Alcohol (ethanol & tertiary), citrus rind, bubble-gum fruits, a little spice & toffee.

T: Ethanol, wood, tertiary alcohols, citrus rind, candied fruit, slight toffee sweetness, a little corn, very little bitterness. Alcohol is hot/warming, seems like it's over 10%.

M: Moderate body is smooth with a drying, alcohol finish.

D: Even after a year and a half in the cellar, the alcohol makes this a sipper.

Sorry, this isn't going to be a great review as I had it last night and didn't take notes.
Story: was at a golf course's bar, where the specialize in mega-swill, and saw a Weyerbacher bottle in the fridge, all alone. I asked the bartender chick about it, she didn't know anything. I told her that I would gladly buy it if she'd sell it to me. Deal! I think I only paid a few bucks. I'm thinking a rep came by the bar and gave it to them.

a - cloudy, in fact had small chunks of yeast/sediment floating around. It probably hadn't properly settled from transport, and she poured it like it was a filtered beer... straw colored, appropriate for a tripel.

s - whisky, oak, not much belgain smell.

t - wow, it was pretty oaky, and even had a hint of whiskey, but overall it was very well balanced and easy drinking. Nice flavors, smooth, and not overpoweringly belgian-yeast-phenolics. I'm not a big fan of tripels but this was very enjoyable. The whisky notes and oak character really goes well with this beer

m - chunks don't bother me. Smooth and medium carbonation makes drinking easy

d - I had no idea this beer was >9% before I came to BA to look it up. I figured it was strong only because it's an oak aged beer from Weyerbacher. Exceptionally easy drinking.

Poured from a 22oz. bottle into a snifter glass.

A: The beer is a dark gold color, with a large off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of Belgian yeast, spices, various fruits, alcohol, some caramel and a touch of hops.

T: The taste is nicely balanced with flavors of spice, fruit and caramel up front and the bready flavor of Belgian yeast in the background. There's a mild hops presence and a hearty malt character. There's a slight alcohol bite. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smoother than the regular Merry Monks Ale, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down dangerously easy, not too filling, strong kick, very good representation of style, there are times when I think barrel aging is overrated but in this case it has definitely taken a beer that was pretty good and improved it.

Pours a dark, golden hue with a minimal head and very minor lacing...
A strong yeast-dominated aroma pervades this beer, along with sight hints of honey and candied sugars...
Oaky, tart, slightly sour and bitter flavor combined with nuances of honey, candied sugars, and vanilla...
Good mouthfeel along with a fair level of drinkability to match, especially for a 9.3% ABV...
Not bad, but certainly not an outstanding tripel by any means... Aged in oak, so the flavor is varied...

12 oz bottle poured into a wine goblet - 2005 bottling - Fridge Temp

Appearance: Pours a semi-cloudy golden color with yellowish gold color. The head is a minimal 1/4" white color with little retention and no lacing.

Smell: Starts out musty and oaky like the barrel it was aged in. Sweet malt follows with a slight peppery aroma.

Taste: Sweet and oaky with no apparent hop flavor. Peppery flavor resides as well. Tastes eerily like a whisky.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, sweet and full of tannin. Lingering dryness and ample booze.

Drinkability: Decent but not as good as it was fresh. A far cry from the Merry Monks' Tripel.

Bomber poured into several sampling glasses.

Nice golden color with snow white head. This thing smells of bourbon, pure and simple. Not at all what an unsuspecting person would appreciate, but I love it.

Taste is definitely belgian in nature, with the yeasty funk I like but intertwined nicely with the bourbon and oak notes that make this one so unique. I think a Tripel is one of the best beneficiaries of all this oak aging hooplah. Vanilla is also evident.

Drinkable yes, nice feel to this one and I wish I would have kept the whole bottle to myself.

Where to start with this beer?
I have to say, at first smell, I knew I was drinking one of the most unique brews I have had for a while.
It was a nice, gold with a decent head and abundant lacing.
The nose was of a tripel absolutly awash with whiskey! I have never smelled a beer that smelled and tasted so much like the bourbon barrels it was aged in.
Taste mirrored the nose, very heavy whisky notes with the Merry monk hiding in the back.
This was a very unique and good beer.
I enjoyed, thanks to fellow BA aherberger.

I can't believe the overall rating for this beer is only a B. This is a monster of complexity and a masterpiece. It pours a clody dirty-yellow (not the most auspicious start) with a good deal of concentric-ring lacing. There's a big aroma of oak and bourbon-spice. Flavors are reminiscent of both a tripel and a Belgian golden ale, with an intense oakey booziness and subtle notes of raisin, lemon, and the barest trace of farmhouse ale notes and Belgian floral funk. The alcohol presence is just right. Highly recommended.

Pours a hazy pale golden-orange color. Initially produces a good sized fluffy white head which fades quite quickly to a thin wisp. No lacing apparent.

Loved the aroma of this one (dispite other reviews!). Lots of banana, bubblegum, vanilla, lemon rind, straw, freshly cut grass, flowers with a touch of an oaky chardonnay in the background. Lots of great aromatics going on here.

Mouthfeel was moderately full and chewy with a lively carbonation.

Taste is fairly sweet with a mild tartness revealing banana, spices, honey, vanilla, citrus, wood and chardonnay. Finishes with a mild alcoholic warmth and a lingering sweetness.

Found it to be a nicely complex and satisfying Triple (again, dispite all the mediocre reviews!)

Pours a hazy straw yellow with a thin head that quickly diminishes. The aroma was abundant sweet malts, oak, coriander, spice, and yeast. The taste is a huge letdown after the promising aroma. An overbearing sourness masks all other flavors to the point of being almost undetectable, even the oak. The beer is medium bodied with present alcohol. I have to hope that I had an infected bottle and the beer is supposed to taste better. I don't know, and I likely won't purchase another one to find out.

12 oz bottle, no freshness date

Is this supposed to be a sour/tart beer?

Poured a golden color with a white frothy head that went to a thick ring and laced nicely.

Smell has a soured aroma with oak in the background.

Taste was, well, sour. I am not sure if this brew was infected or supposed to taste like this. I am not at all a fan of sour beers, and this one certainly tasted off to me. I could note some oak/wood flavors in the background, but i felt like i was drinking a beer with a piece of sour candy in my mouth at the same time.

Mouthfeel was light and carbonated, especially for a triple, the 9% was well hidden.

I cant drink this because of the tart/sour flavor. perhaps my bottle was infected, i have no idea. I didnt notice on any other reviews that there was a tart character to it. Ill try it again if one shows up at my door, but i will nto seek another one out.

A 22 oz bomber from State Line. It's been cellared for several months.

A: The ale has a bright orange-yellow color, looking like a watered down apple juice. There is no sign of any impurities in the ale, creating a translucent look. The head was not so thick but does lace nicely around the mouth of the glass.

S: The aroma is full of oak notes, thick with buttery sweetness. Tripel aromas manage to sneak out of the wood too, adding pepper and candi sugar to the happenings.

T: A sip reveals an overwhelming oak taste, thick with a lush buttery taste that delivers some pepper and vanilla in a sweet 'n' spicy combo. Mixed with the oak flavors is a strong tripel body, with additional pepper zest and candi sugar sweetness that mixes nicely with the oak. As the ale warms, the oak flavoring remains the same, rather than taking on additional flourishes. While a bit of a letdown, this is still a good sippin' beer.

M: The silky softness of the oak barrel is exquisite. The sweetness pervades every sip and leaves the palate very happy.

D: The abv is high but manages to hide itself nicely behind the oak barrel. I love a nice barrel aged beer and this is no exception.
