Easy answer here: What should be better than a Simcoe hopped IPA? A Double Simcoe, of course. The entire contents of a pint can have been emptied into a clear glass liter mug. It was a beautiful pour, with just the right sized and composed off-white head. Although it was short-lived, it was once lovely. What remains intact is the full and bright copper-amber color of the liquid. It's hazy to the point of opaqueness. There's a nice balance to its aroma between malt and hops, although it doesn't have quite the bite of some Simcoe hopped IPAs. This serving just came out of the refrigerator, so that likely makes an impact. Even chilled, the hops fulfill their expectations and make this a wonderfully bitter hopfest. They come through with piney, resinous and earthy features, in a body that carries them superbly. The relatively high ABV only augments the overall taste and the clean bite at the finish. The scant glass lacing is also effected by that. If oats and/or wheat have any part in this, it's so minimal that it makes no difference. This is a solid West Coast style IPA, although some may find it a little too malty. Most should consider this an outstanding representative of the style.

12 oz. pour on draught at the brewery. It pours a hazy, dark apricot color with a thin, milky head but lots of thick, elegant lacing. Its smell features ripe red berry, apricot, and pine sap. The taste largely follows with a strong malty base, with sticky, ripe berry, subtle tropical notes, pine resin, and sharp, biting bitterness throughout. There is just a hint of hop burn at the finish. The mouth feel is plush and creamy with a pleasant level of carbonation, and it drinks big for its 9% ABV. Overall, the idea of a single hop Simcoe DIPA is great and Weyerbacher has pulled if off very nicely. This is a fine Imperial IPA that I would drink any time.

it is my honor to do the first review of the brewery's return from bankruptcy (twice, from what I understand). Having spent an occasional afternoon at the brewery, good to see them back. But, honestly, this looks, smells, and taste more like an new school hazy double IPA then the original, old school, classic. But, good, maybe very good, good enough at the excellent $11 4 pak price, that I got one last weekend, and again, tonight. Because, where I live, it's pricing at $20-$21 for 4, which is RIDICULOUS, and, another, perfect example, of what's wrong with craft these days. Plain and simple, this beer is NOT worth $21 4 pak. Now, if they could just make the classic, spring seasonal, Slam Dunkel again, yea, like that's going to happen, NOT. X5K, out.

Some scrappy notes from 2015-16.
Has a dark gold and reddish look with a light tan head and some decent carbonation bubbles. The smell is strong hops, pine cone, berries, orange, caramel and dark bread. The taste is actually very similar to the smell and it's juicy and wet but has more of a dry finish that doesn't stay around too long. It's not really a heavy tasting beer but is full flavored and is an excellent IPA all around.

Sampled bottle, RBNAG 2007 in Grimstad. ABV was 9%. Amber to orange colour, slightly hazy, decent head. Lovely Simcoe hops aroma. Distinctly hoppy flavour throughout, considerable sweetness but not bad.

Bottled 6/12/15; drank 11/10/15 @ the Yarchives...admittedly not ideal for a DIPA.

Opaque dull orange rust appearance; lots of khaki flotsam.

A rough pour yielded a decent khaki head; a frothy curtain of lace.

Caramel, banana & pine notes in the nose.

Medium thick mouthfeel.

Caramel & banana flavors up front; sharp pine bitterness on the finish.

Interesting & still drinkable, wish I had a fresh one...

From notes 12/28/11: Pours a coppery amber producing a 1.5 inch light tan, lasting, frothy head that leaves beautiful chunky, sticky lacing. Aroma is cantaloupe, pine, tangerine and grapefruit citrus hop notes biscuit and caramel malt. Taste starts with a buttery, toasty caramel malt; with a pine and citrus hop bite emerging in the middle it balances nicely in the finish to leave a heavy bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel is near heavy bodied with moderate-high carbonation, a hint of creaminess it is wet and lively.

Red, dark scarlet color. Perfectly balanced DIPA. Heavy hops offset by equally heavy malt. Harkens to Avery The Maharaja.

Double Simcoe pours a darker hazy amber color, with a nice head. Big hops and earth smells. Flavor is big and hoppy, bitter, with a smack of earth near the end. Good body and feel. Overall, big beer, lots of flavor.
