Pours hazy orangish amber with a white creamy head that remains a lasting thin head. Some vanishing lace left on glass. Nice head retention for abv level.

The smell is musty - alcohol and apple. Some caramel comes through. Only hints of citrus.

The taste is better than the smell - but not much. An unusual sour apple taste is present along with the typical citrus - orange. Sour and bitter with some brown-sugar sweetness from the malt holding the hops together.

Chewy and full. Leaves a decent, though somewhat metallic, feel.

It's okay, but not what I would look for in the style. Better examples of style out there.

I have heard mixed reviews about this beer and I shyed away from it for awhile cuzz of the price but I went ahead and got some this weekend.Awesome pour into an imperial pint glass a slight hazed deep golden with peach colored tint with a huge blooming head that left sheets of lace as it settled into a soapy-like top slowly.Picked up some big pinapple and brown sugar notes in the nose the pine a little subdued under the fruity pineapple notes,the flavors didnt match the nose in my mind somewhat stinging alcohol and quite herbal and spicey although that spice might be mistaken for alcohol burn somewhat resiny but the citrus and pine are still subdued.It is pretty tasty and bordering on American Barley Wine territory but not a typical DIPA flavor wise.Is it worth the money...no but Its still a pretty good beer and if offered I wouldnt hesitate to drink it again.

The more I drank the more the sticky sweetness came thru, wow very sticky

This is my third time trying a bomber from the Chesapeake Gourmet in Queenstown, MD.

Doesnt appear to be anything special. Brown with light red transparency with little head.

I dont get much from the smell. I dont know why this is. Im tellin ya, Im stick my entire face in my Chimay chalace and I cant really catch a whiff of anything.

Initial taste takes me away.

Love the taste and feel together. I can take a sip and roll it up in my tougue for lots of time, loving every second that goes by. It feels a little syrupy, but then the carbonation kicks in. I then release and swallow to taste the alcohol bite. I dont think this is a typical alcohol grab, more like alcohol thats marinated in malt. While Im not doing a good job describing it, ill say its a bit different from alcohol flavoring like you see in a barely wine, but along those lines.

Finish is malty. dont get a lot of hops until the very very end. I would not consider this a hoppy beer even though its a triple.

Love this beer because is surprises me each time I try it. Very potent. While it should be a sipping beer, I find myself wanting to gulp it.

Pours a cloudy copper/orange color with a ridiculous creamy head that goes nowhere. Lacing all over the place.

Smells of citrus, piney, grassy hops hops and more hops. Very light maltiness to the aroma although smells very sweet yet crisp.

Taste is of total hops and alcohol. Very puingent. astringent, piney, and grassy hops bombard the palate. Totally one-dimensional. Not smooth or balanced. Very pronounced alcohol as well.

Mouthfeel is semi-syrupy and well carbonated.

Not drinkable at all, Im afraid. Combine the abv% and the ridiculous one dimensionality of this brew and you have a one in a time brew if you have the money and lack of other options.

I wasnt very impressed.

12 ounce bottle, without freshness indication, this bold brew was allowed to warm up for about 20-30 mins and was enjoyed with some walnuts and crackers. Pours dark coppery amber, clear, with a few bubbles continuing to rise to the top. Dark tan long lasting head leaving pleanty of sticky lacing. The nose here is boldly of tons of malt, piney hops and alcohol. This is a very big and bold brew, over the top overloads of hops, waves of malt and pleanty of warming alcohol. Nice night capper or would be great with some stinky cheese.

Thanks to DarkerTheBetter for this unexpected surprise...12oz.
Pours a hazy, worn copper color with a full finger of creamy, off-white head. Thick lacing remains to the side of the snifter as it recedes...very attractive.
Not an assault on the nose, but loaded with piney, fruity hops and a slight alcohol detection.
The taste is where the aggression comes into play...heavy on the malty sweetness, but overly bitter in the finish...sucking any moisture my tongue had before my first sip.
You know the alcohol is there, but it is very well masked by the amount of malt used in the making of the anniversary brew.
Grassy/earthy flavors, oily hops coat the mouth with each sip...tart apples in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is as thick as any double I've had and the carbonation is fairly high...making this one to savor and not throw back.
I should be receiving a couple bombers thanks to zrrbrrt...to work my way through one of those will be a challenge I gladly accept.
Another anniversary brew that is received with high marks from me.

I went back to the cellar to see if this beast has calmed down after 6 months. Still the alcohol taste is overwhelming and this is a tough one even to sip. The hops used are a little odd so the taste is a not a typical DIPA. It is improving with time but still needs some more so that hopefully it will turn into a hoppy barleywine. Cheers to Weyerbacher for trying to brew something different.

Poured into a snifter,a bright reddish orange color,very cloudy
A nice 1" head,very tiney bubbles stringing together to forming a tightly knit head.
The first wiff,WOW, intense,the alcohol noticed first,then the citrus,grapefruit,pineapple,very fruity.Complex hop aromas exploding in your face.
The taste,alcohol is present is not hidden here.Citrus,grapefruit,intense bitterness.Malt notes of caramel,sweet and nutty.Don't know about balance due to the blast of flavor to the inner mouth reigon.Also tastes of citrus rinds and a slight cardboard taste.Very complex but a bit of overkill.
The mouthfeel was thick,cloying,syrupy,the warm feeling of alcohol.
This beer totally wrecked my palate for the rest of the evening.
Not a very drinkable beer with the intense flavor and alcohol presence.
This beer was just too much for me,way overdone

I see where they were heading but I'm not sure I like the destination of this Weyerbacher brew...appears a cloudy apricot orange nearly opaque, I can't really see my hand on the other side of the sampling snifter. Forms a large off white head leaves even bands of lacing around the glass. Aromatics contain citrus, flowers, and heavy alcohol with some sugary malt components mainly syrupy pineapple character. Taste has a hot raw alcohol infused with green vinous hop bitterness high alpha acids apparent with citrus peel tones, no real sweetness that I'm pickin' up but as it warms there is a touch of sugary alcohol in the finish but overall it's firey rough alcohol with a raw unrefined heaping load of hops. Mouthfeel is oily with hop resins it's medium to fuller bodied beer with a sturdy pronounced carbonation. Drinkability is rough hard to swallow and it's beginning to induce heart burn it's pretty damn non refreshing and not something I will be reaching for any time soon. Triple IPA whatever it's too extreme for it's on good yet there are some positives here give it a try.

(Served in an American pint glass)

A- This beer has a warm apricot murky body with and off-white creamy head that last a bit. There are medium sized bubbles gently gliding to the surface.

S- This beer has a slight sweet malt note that is a bit sugary with a soft green hop finish.

T- This beer has a big pungent hop bitterness with a soft pineapple sweetness and a citrus hop note. The light fruitiness is sweet really enhancing the big bitter punch in the mouth at the finish. There are hints of apricots in the malt as it warms and the hops bitterness lingers long after each sip.

M- This beer has a medium-full mouthfeel with a slight slippery texture and a soft alcohol heat in the finish.

D- This beer is a true hop monster with a big punishing hops finish. I can really see the malt qualities of a triple and that really boost the bitterness of the hops.

22 oz. bottle - Aged for 1.5 years

Tulip Glass

Appearance - Cloudy and hazy with a head that dissipates very quickly. Looks like a lot of yeast particles in the beer. Some light lacing on the sides.

Smell - sweet smell with a dose of alcohol. Some pine resin

Taste - After 1.5 years there is still a strong alcohol presence with a pine and citrus combination. The hops have moderated quite q bit.

Mouthfeel - A lively mouthfeel with some syrupy overtones. Moderate feel to the mouth, not too heavy though. Very crisp and warming with the high alcohol on board.

Drinkability - I thought there would be more hops in the taste profile to be honest. Not bad but the high alcohol menas drink it slow.

This seems to be growing on my palate as I get through the first glass. Middle of the road Double IPA so far.

Pours a golden orange with a massive craggy off white head that seem to never melt but leaves behind very sticky lacing as you drain the glass.
Aromas seem subtle for a 'triple' IPA...sweet amber malts blended with an orange or Mandarin type hops.
Taste is very sweet amber malt that evolves to brown sugar sweetness then citrus peel hops.
Aftertaste is mostly about the citrus peel hops.
Mouthfeel starts smooth and creamy then turns to slightly bitter and drying without ever losing the sugary stickiness of the immense malts.
Alcohol is totally lost in the sweet malts and bitter hops but a warming permeates the body as you drink this elixir

Weyerbacher- 11

Appearance- cloudy yelowish orange with a huge frothy head.
Smell- Pine, strong acidic cherry and grape, and alcohol.
Taste- Pine and a strong cherry malt with huge hits of alcohol. The alcohol is the dominent flavor.
Mouthfeel- Sweet with pine and malt at first but the alcohol takes over and chokes you. The alcohol burns when you swallow and the aftertaste alcohol flavor is overpowering.

Overall- C'mon now, Too much alcohol not enough hops. Plain and simple. Is this is a novelty/ gimmick beer ( A Triple IPA)?!

I'll stick to the other Weyerbacher offerings.

20 oz bomber>Oversize wine chalice

AP: Pours a cloudy and thick looking orange-hued copper color with a massive, frothy 2" thick bubbly cream colored head that lasted well after all of the pure liquid contents were gone. Created some very intricate and sticky lacing patters all around the glass.

Nose: When I first poured this one, a friend of mine who was standing maybe five feet away said:"I can smell that thing from here!" The aroma of extremely sweet and citrusy hops, which include...pineapple and grapefruit and even some honeydew mellon amazed me right off. There are also some leafy, earthy notes as well.

Taste: This is powerful citrus flavored hop explosion! that includes Grapefruit and pineapple flavors with a sweet hop and minor sweet malt effect...but the very slight malt taste gives way quickly to a "wet" leafy and earthy hop finish. Yes, this one is ALL about the hop, but the distinct citrus fruity flavors is more abundant and overwhelming than any other IPA I've ever had. The alcohol is noticable but IMO not intrusive at all and not that overwhelming. The ABV % is more FELT than it is tasted.

MF: This is a full bodied IPA! thick and heavy looking and feeling. It also has a really good crisp and lively bite. The head on this one is sooo creamy and thick it goes down smooth.

DA: This is a very extreme IPA, Tripple IPA....but still not as extreme as the DFH 120 minute, the Eleven is fruity where as the 120 minute is SWEEET dominated, still 11.7% ABV is no joke so you have to watch your ass on this one! I was feling pretty buzzed after one 20 oz bottle, but deep inside I wanted another.

This pours a clear burnt orange with a giant foamy head. The smell is a nice mixture of citrus hops and a 'bisquity" aroma. The taste is a very strong alcohol and a bitter hops. This isn't bad,but it's strong both flavor and alcohol wise. The flavors are overpowered by the high alcohol content making this alittle tough to drink. The m/f is light,but it could use some malt to mellow out the bitter hops. This is a decent beer,but I don't think I could drink it again. It's just too strong,although I love this brewery.Cheers.

12 oz. bottle into an oversized wine glass. Thanks to my friend Corey for the sample.

Appearance: A hazy, rusty colored orange with tinges of red and brown. Head is a sticky white that fades fairly quickly but leaves a good clinging ring around the top of the glass.

Smell: Fruity malt and aromatic hop oils with some citrus, cherry, and maybe melon in there too. Also some toasted and burnt characters from, I guess, the malt.

Taste: Easily the most bitter IPA I've ever had, and it's almost making my eyes water. Too much hops and not enough malt to balance it? But as it warms the malt comes through a bit and the hops lessen in their bitterness. There are tinges of fruity and toasted malt on the back of the tongue after the swallow, but a toasted bitterness, almost root-like, remains. Maybe some of the bitterness like wild greens in a salad, but pushed to limit in a way, almost too much I'd say.

Mouthfeel: Fairly sticky and slightly cloying, with lots of bubbles and kind of an off feeling, somehow, with the carbonation.

Drinkability: Your palate seriously has to be trained in bitterness for this sucker. I wish they would've tweaked this more before sending it out the the masses. But as it warms the bitterness definitely diminishes and lets other fruity and malty flavors comes through. I'd like to see what happens in a few years--this may be a surprising celebratory beer in a few, though it could also swan dive into oblivion. Keep it up, though, Weyerbacher, the spirit's in this beer, along with most of your beers, and that's more than I can say for a lot of breweries these days. Can't wait to see what happens with 12.

Big head with soapy bubbles, with lace. Funky smell, astringency and drying finish in 109 ibu. Must keep drinking, for hop fix. Crwillis bottle, thanks Craig. Didn't realize how high the alcohol was and it was hidden. Not best I have had for the style, which are often overated for me.

Weyerbacher's Eleven really takes things up a notch!

This brash and bold ale pours a mostly-clear (it's just so viscous that you could never really see your fingerprints through the glass), gold-orange-copper body beneath a massive head of frothy ivory lace. The head retention is excellent and it leaves walls of thick, craggy lace about the glass.

The nose is surprisingly restrained for a self-proclaimed "triple" IPA; but there are some piney and gently citrusy/fruity/minty hops there; and to a certain extent, the huge head holds the aroma back by containing it. The head is beautiful though!

In the mouth, an over-abundance of malt leaves it stunningly dextrinous and creamy (almost chewy!), but a zesty carbonation is able to liven the tongue and cut through its maltiness, keeping it from becoming sticky.

The hops and alcohol hit you straight away at the first sip, but the pillowy soft, gently sweet, and mildly caramelish malt follows, softening the blow. The hops are pungent, softly piney, minty, sublimely fruity (or is that from the yeast?), leafy, and perhaps spicy - but that's hard to tell as a swish of alcohol enters fairly abruptly and never does get the hint to go home. After a few sips you'll start to feel the warming in your mouth, throat, and belly; and not far beyond that your palate will become dulled. The bitterness is rock solid, but not abrasive, and the huge maltiness balances nicely. Where are the hops though? You just can't pick them out in the mix. Nor can you really taste the malt, for that matter. The bitterness, hop acidity, and alcohol are always present though. It's just muddled...

As it warms, however, it becomes much clearer and far more enjoyable. The alcohol is still there proclaiming it's strength at every opportunity, but the malt and hop flavors start to balance and make sense. If you view this as a super-strong English-style IPA it makes far more sense than what you might expect from an American double-IPA. And, I think, at cellar temperature, I'd quite enjoy a half-pint of this after one of two "regulars".

Overall impression: an over the top beer that's been fired so high into the sky that it's lost touch with earth. Massive and bold, but somehow lacking finesse.

I've been a fan of practically every Weyerbacher beer I've tried and although this is not an exception, it wasn't the best DIPA I've had either. Pours a nice copper hue with lots of head. Smells and taste of lots of citrusy Simcoe hops. Floral and fruity, though the bitterness have subsided a bit in its 6 months. Easy to finish the bomber but nothing I'm crying out for getting anytime soon.

Poured from a 22 oz bomber to a pint glass, the liquid in a dull cloudy light light brown, kind of yellowish. The head is massive 3 fingers and huge staying power. I finished the first glass and there was still an inch of foam at the bottom. The head is thick, rocky topped and rubbery in body. Needless to say a very nice lace was ever-present.

The smell is supper hopy. A woodsy pine base, hints of with lemon. A very big grapefruit scent that can sting your nose.

The taste is mild sweet, lots of pine and grapefruit. The big hops is very powerful indeed. Not one dimensional but not very complex, but hey, it is also quite well balenced, Yes this is very hopy but big malt as well.

The mouthfeel is great. just great, full body, great carbonation. Very very nice.

The drinkability in also very good. 11.7 ABV is covered as well as can be. but it is big and there. Not you fathers session beer to be sure. prosit, MK

A: Poured a dark, murky, rustic orange color with a thin, creamy khaki head. When held up to the light there was a ton of peppery floaties present as well a very lazy medium carbonation that slowly rose to the surface.

S: The nose was sweet and boozy with caramel and honey with a big floral bouquet. Sampled this first green in 2006 and the aroma nearly singed my nose hairs and the alcohol definitely dominated the flavor and was over-bearing at times to say the least. Fast forward 2 years later and this beer has gracefully mellowed with age to a much more pleasant experience.

T: There was a spicy alcohol presence but was much more smoother, and quicker off the fade and mangeable. There was some musky fruit of pears and apples with a nice flowering hop bitterness. Some sour caramel, raisins are also detected. The finish was nice with a musky fade.

M: The mouthful was creamy, full bodied with a sour caramel and bittering hop fade left behind on the swallow.

O: Still a sipper but the ageing has made this a much better experience.

This is a 650 mL capped bottle. I am doing a six month check-up on this ale because it was still too hot back in January.

A: The DIPA pours with a brilliant orange color, looking more like a tea than beer. The beer is still well carbonated. A head in the range of three fingers erupted in the glass, covering the walls with thick patches of drying foam. The body of the bubbles is retaining nicely too.

S: The nose has lost some of its strength since last check. Grainy malts have begun to sneak into the nose, providing a caramel biscuitiness that overcrowds the hops. Some citrusy notes emerge but the drop-off is significant.

T: The hop character has dropped off but the alcohol has not. The first sip reveals a whole mouthful of alcohol heat. Some hops remain but they have gone earthy, picking up a vegetal taste that is a big departure from the grapefruit bomb of earlier. As the ale warms, some of those long-forgotten hops re-emerge and ramp up the taste with grapefruit, pineapple and apricot flavors. The aftertaste is quite vegetal, fairly unusual.

M: The big alcohol body has taken center stage here, overloading the tastebuds from the start of the glass. The hops have cooled down significantly but they do re-emerge near the end to strip the enamel from your teeth.

D: The abv is too high and too in-your-face to really enjoy. The beer is still hot, even with a year under its belt. It's scary how much hop flavor was in this ale a year ago.

On tap @ barcade from their weyerbacher event, formed a 1" tan head over the cloudy reddish brew. Dense head lasts impressively, with reasonable lacing. Aroma is fruity alcohols. Flavor is malty sweetness upfront, lightly fruity in the middle, with a gaspingly hot alcohol close. Mouthfeel is pretty good, almost chewy, and the drinkability this isnt really there, this beer is over the top, in your face, even after a few years this beer is still hot. I could only imagine what this beer was like when this beer was 1st released

Bottle courtesy of Hopdog: Poured a cloudy light brown color ale with a big foamy head with good retention. Aroma of hops is quite easily noticeable but as well there is a good malt backbone as well as something sweet (honey?). Taste is a well balance mix between some medium bitter hops without any citrus profile and some sweet malt. Body is quite full and alcohol is well hidden. This is very well done and I appreciate the initiative to brew a IIPA without big citrus hops as I believe it has been done quite a few time before.
