22oz. brown bottle with no dates.

A: Hazy orange brew with golden edges. Pours a decent 2 finger head that dissipates down to thin covering.

S: A well balanced Saison with sweetness in the form of Granny Smith Apples and melange of spices.

T/M: Moderate to light carbonation with a medium body give this beer some serious character. Apples, oranges, and lots of spices. A bit of coriander, black pepper, and nutmeg.

A nice Saison that does not go over the top like the style tends to.

Poured into a large tulip glass a slightly hazed peachy color with a large blooming white that clung nicely to the glass leaving globs of lace as it settled very very slowly.I like the aromas very juicy and fruity almost like....a gummy worm yeah a gummy work ok I know sounds dumb but thats what I get along with a hint of phenolic spice but I think it works.Flavors are a little medicinal and yeasty with some clovey notes along with some leafy mint and ginger.Honestly this is much better than expected Iam not big on the medicinal flavors but there are things going on keeping it in my graces,I think I like better than most.

A: Poured from a bomber into a Black Hook pilsner glass. Perfect amber in color reminiscent of apple cider with very active carbonation. There is no head retention with no lacing.

S: Sweet malts with a strong alcohol aroma which is surprising given the ABV.

T: Sweet malt flavor with a hint of apple and fruit. There is a slight hop hint when the brew is left on the pallet. Conversely the gulping of this beer allows the beer to pass over the tongue leaving very little flavor less a slightly bitter aftertaste on the back of the tongue.

M/D: This ale is a little thin and leaves a little slickness behind. Overall I find this to be a pleasant summer brew. With the modest ABV I can have a couple and safely mow the grass. I also felt that for the relatively low cost, this is a good beer to keep around for he warm months, I only wish that I could get it in cans.

Weyerbacher Muse farmhouse ale... 6.2% alcohol.
I've had this one before but got another bottle to review.

A- Pours a hued orange color with a outragously
active one and a quarter inch off white head that stay around for the remainder of the beer.
Leaves excellent rings of sticky lacing on glass.

S- Smell of raw wheat, farmhouse, spicy yeast and alcohol esters upfront. In the backend of this beer notes of possible malts and wheat husk.

T-M- First taste is a zesty funk from the yeast most likely... musky oranges, lemon and sweet malts. The alcohol has a prominent pessence that runs the flavors over the tongue.
Overall danky yeast and light sweetness and mild bitter characteristics. Mouthfeel is medium due to alcoholic taste. Has a very acidic feel with light carbonation as it rolls over the buds.

D- Fairly drinkable and mildly refreshing. I would have again but i'm in no rush to find.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine July 2007.

Fermented with Forbidden Fruit yeast at a high tem- perature. Hopped with Styrian Goldings and Saaz--they took an authentic path, to be sure. Word of warning: Serve this beer at cellar temperature.

A steady decanting yields enough white head to almost spill out of the glass; a rich rocky head slowly subsides to a patch trail of lace. Hazed tawny color, to be expected of the style. Musty aroma; more basement than barnyard in the nose and very yeasty in the back, with both medicinal phenols and fruity esters. It's a yeast explosion to start with, and a medicinal phenolic character is not too far off, either. Thankfully, they get balanced off by a dry malt flavor, slightly tropical fruity esters and a faint hop smack.

With its over-the-top with flavor, this one will certainly be hard to grasp for the novice beer drinker--especially anyone with no knowledge of Belgian ales. That said, if you dig Fantôme, you will love this beer. We may as well chalk this one up to being this year's most complex American-brewed Belgian-style ale. Baked brie cheese with a blackberry filling would be a good, taming accompaniment.

Pours orange-amber (into a Chouffe glass) with frothy head that fades into a thin film and minimal lacing.

Aroma is kumquats/ lemon.

Taste is more candied than I expect. Belgian yeast perhaps? (research- Forbidden Fruit Yeast- that explains it!) Finishes hoppy and dry, so that carries through and builds as a predominant character after the first sip. There is definitely some rich malt in all the citrus and hops.

Mouthfeel is lively, but it is weightier overall than other saisons I enjoy.

Overall I definitely like it, but it strikes me as a saison that you would drink at the very end of summer or early spring. I also wish there was better head retention.

A 22oz bomber poured into a tulip glass. Orange color with a thick white head. Very spicy aroma. The taste was intensely spicy, and tasted mainly of cloves. I thought this was a pretty harsh-tasting beer, and not too enjoyable. One and done for me on this one.

22 oz bottle thanks to mntlover. Pours into a chalice a hazy orange amber body with a small offwhite head. Patchy lacing left behind. Aroma of caramel, coriander, grass, pepper, yeast, and fruity melon. Mouthfeel is medium in body and carbonation. Taste has a floral and herbal hops bitterness with a touch of spicy pepper. Sweet malts are a bit too prominent, leading to a caramel edge at times. Spices are not as evident as in the aroma. Dries out nicely toward the finish. Not on a par with the best Belgian saisons but certainly one of the better American efforts.

Bomber bottle, no freshness indication. Pours cloudy apricot amber, minor off white head and just spotty lacing. Peppery nose with a hint of rubber. Spice, pepper, tart fruit, dusty rubber notes picked up, feels slightly thin mouthfeel wise, but tasty and semi complex none the less. Respectable take on the style. Worth a try for saison lovers. Could use some more yeast character and/or "funk" as somebody else mentioned.

Poured from 22oz bomber into 20oz pint glass. Poured with a two finger head that quickly diminishes to a thin skim, nice lacing, looks tasty. Pours a dark orange amber. Smell is funk, oats, straw, pungent in an animal kind of way. Taste is DOMINATED by the overwhelming barnyard-iness. Light hops initially, followed by the aforementioned funkiness, and a long dry finish. Lightly bitter in the finish. This is unlike any Saison I have had before. Mouthfeel was good, its kind of heavy and thick for the style with quite a few things going on. Drinkability was so so. This tastes like the fat, intellectually challenged brother of a fine Saison whom I will not mention in this sentence.

Executive Summary: An interesting choice for Weyerbacher, and it's executed pretty well. Most W beers have an element to them I can pick out with my eyes closed, but this one is different. A true departure from their standard fare.

Note: There should be a category for "sound" - I got quite a memorable hiss from this bottle when I opened it!

Appearance: Very cloudy, dull amber with an initially thick, frothy off-white head. Head reduces to a little bit more than a film. Some lacing apparent.

Smell: Belgian yeast - spicy as all get-out. Fruity notes as well as a distinct clove presence, all amid a bready, earthy backdrop.

Taste: More of that earthiness up front with a significant yeast contribution. Pronounced residual tartness that overtakes any Styrian Goldings hop character that may have been intended.

Mouthfeel: Quite smooth with fairly aggressive carbonation levels. Light overall.

Drinkability: Once you get over the initial tartness, this is quite quaffable and refreshing. I'd go back for more in the warm weather.

I got to try this one at the Penn Brewfest as my first sample of the evening but let's take a closer look with all of the hype of a beer fest every beer seems awesome. Appears a very clouded deep golden apricot hue forms with a large honey tinted beige head leaves a thick collar of lace as it dwindles with each sip the lace clings form even consecutive rings down the chalice. Aroma upfront grassy with wild hay aspects, spices flow bringing an earthy lively nuttiness about, the yeast strain that I made sure to empty completely in to my glass brings a deep bready labryinth blending with the light toasted specialty malts adding an almost perfumey tropical fruitiness with herbal fresh cut grass hops lingering in the nose. Flavor initial rush of complexity comes crashing with embedded tropical fruit a touch of pineapple, and citrus edge complemented by the spicy wild yeast and bready lightly toasted grains to a quick finish of perfumey dryness kinda like the feeling after someone sprayed perfume/cologne and you walk into the room. The wild barnyard and freshly cut grass scream a farmhouse ale, although I could use a touch of more sweetness to stay on the palate to complment the perfumey dryness but overall damn complex and interesting one for me. Mouthfeel is velvety with fine bubbled carbonation light to medium body but a bit cloying with a dry funky bitterness that sticks with you well beyond every sip. Drinkability is not too sessionable yet my ideal saison should be since this is a style that doesn't have to kill you with alcohol but the complexity of the funky barnyard yeast characteristics and perfume ridden finish do hurt the overall drinkability a desirable beer for the most part but I would have to be in the right type of analytical mode to have another.

(Served in an American pint glass)

A- This beer has a crystal clear body that glows with a light copper hue and a sea of carbonation boiling to the surface. There is a thick mousse head that sticks to the glass with each sip.

S- The soft smell of dish soap and wet rain has a faint note of raw grain to it but otherwise it is pretty clean.

T- This beer has a creamy flavor with a soft watery lemon hint finishing with a soft bitter quality most likely from hops. There is a faint woody hint to the hops flavor.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a watery texture and a fizzy finish of scrubbing bubbles.

D- This beer had very little flavor and the bitterness was bold the hops were lacking. There was just no subtle complexity that I really enjoy in this flavor.

Bomber poured into snifter

A- Cloudy blood orange, bright white head, doesn't last long, nice lacing on the glass

S- Citrus, lots of citrus, some malt, no hops.

T- No surprise of the citrus flavor after the aroma. The taste is of a bitter orange. This is the exact flavor I was going for in my homebrew and I completely muffed it, so I am super impressed. This is a delicious ale, a bit on the sweeter side as the curacao-like flavor is very subtle. Super impressed that this flavor is from the yeast and no spice.

M- Medium bodied, nice tang from the carbonation; very good mouthfeel.

D- This is an easy drinker, a bit sweet, but an all around enjoyable quaff.

Pours a medium cloudy orange with a nice full head of white that sticks around a long time before leaving sticky lacing and map work in it's wake.

Aroma is earthy as it should be with an extra heavy yeast aroma and some fruit like tangerines and oranges and lemon. Earthiness overpowers at the end, however and everything else disappears.

Taste is dry yeast and earthiness again. Only a faint bit of the citrus fruits in the middle with a bit of sweetness as you swallow, then very dry and bitter earthiness takes over as with the aroma.

Aftertaste is surprisingly pleasing however with a bit of wild yeast and citrus peel lingering.
Still, mediocre for a Saison at best.

Weyerbacher- Muse

A- Cloudy golden orange with a small, no lacing , head.
S- A bit sour and funky. Whiskey sour mix, tangy citrus fruits and a touch of vinegar.
T- Sweet fruits like orange, lemon, and grapefruit meet a tart/ sour sugary mix. Slight touch of yeasty wet straw/ hay.
M- Sweet up front but turning sour/ tart and dry in the end.

Overall- Not bad at all. Easy on the nose and flavor, a Saison Lite?!

22oz. bomber

A nice cloudy day look with golden sunshine popping through at times with amber hues near sunset. A pretty dark look for a farmhouse ale. A full 2" tight, pillowy head, good retention, nice lace.

the aroma is spicey and herbal with wheat and fresh garden veggies. getle red fruits and tangy pineapple with a hint of chewable children's vitamins.

Wow, intense herbalized flavor of all-spice, zesty wheat with a crispy and light feel, really pretty zippy with a dry peppery efffect. A light veggie hop flavor, pretty subtle. Slight peppercorn and even some mild corriander. the hops provide a soft fruitiness way in the back. Alcohol is slighty sharp and the fruits become tart with a hint of funky belgian yeast but not wicked complex.

Not a bad version of this style but not one of my personal fav's either.

Pours a nice cloudy amber orange with a medium tan foamy head. The smell has lemon,bread yeast, peaches,plums,apples,and other fruit. The taste has all that the smell has,but the hops in this beer make the m/f a little off. The bitter hops mixed with the "juicy" fruit flavor aren't that great a mix. This is only an OK beer. If you like this style you'll like this,otherwise????

Bomber into a Duvel tulip.

Appearance: Hazy, dirty dark yellow body with a moderately off-white and coating head that doesn't stick to the glass as well as it manages to stay thick and atop the body of the brew very nicely.

Smell: A lot of nice bitter hops instead of the funkiness I had expected, but there have been a lot of Saisons domestically brews with this same characteristic, so it doesn't necessarily surprise me. Also I'm getting some ripe cherry and apple skin. Otherwise it's pretty subdued, but still nice enough to make me go back for more.

Taste: Initial burst of hops before mild phenolic and earthy funk from the yeast. What I like is that the hops turns fairly quickly into flavors of ripe fruit, mostly apples, with some sour cherries and strawberry in there too. Long finish, with the funkiness coming back and complimenting the ripe fruit. Again, as with the aroma, it's fairly subdued, but highly drinkable, and I'm glad they didn't try to go overboard with anything.

Mouthfeel: A crisp, fairly medium-bodied feel with a bite from the carbonation that works well and maintains without feeling spritzy or anything as such.

Drinkability: A solid domestic version of the style. With some tweaking this could be pretty great, but I like it now, and it's one that I'm enjoying rather than scrutinizing every second, which could be good or bad in the opinions of some folks, but for me this is something I'm glad a I purchased, at around $4.50 no less, which you can't beat.

Pours a peach color that is slightly hazed, with a half-inch soapy head that sizzles a bit, then reduces quickly.

Aroma is wonderful, definitely true to style but also not a clone of anything. It's got that farmhouse-y dirtiness to it, but quite nutty...I think of dry roasted peanuts. This puts up quite a strong wall, but there is enough apple/pear/peach fruitiness behind it, adding depth along with a hard-to-describe aroma that can only be the yeast.

Flavor is everything hinted at in the nose, with a grassy, bitter finish. Tart most of the way, and some honey sweetness showing up. Lightly toasted grain and breadiness come in strong after sitting with it a bit. Fruits open up a lot as the session moves on, and that peanut element fades, although I'm still left with a trace of it long after each sip. If someone wonders why this is called "farmhouse", one taste pretty much answers that. I know there's a more historical reason, but the flavor itself is a raw, unprocessed, extremely earthy sort of thing. If the finish weren't so astringent, I'd give it a 4.5.

Good bit of dryness, but just wet enough to keep you from gulping it. Texture is great, like watered down pear juice, starting with a near-champagne effervescence but thinning out nicely and doing wonders for the fruity characteristics.

At 6.2%, it's easy to get a bomber down, if we're talking purely alcohol content. Flavor-wise, it's unique, maybe strange, even wonderful...but it wouldn't by my kind of session beer, although an arm-twisting won't be needed to buy this again.

Semi-translucent pumpkin orange topped with a proud, tall, buttercreme stack of suds.
At first, the nose is largely absent of defining features, aside from a peppered notion of husky grain. Over time, whelps of citric peels and white grapes arise, along with a wet limestone sense of funk, mint leaves, and phenols of gauze pads.
Its progression through the mouth follows a nearly identical arc. A coarse raw graininess is experienced first. The tiniest glimmers of fruit-- via pear, lemon rind, and champagne grapes lend phantoms of sweetness. Overall, however, this is crushingly dry and peppery. As such, white peppercorn dominates from the onset to the aftertaste. Funk creeps in with limestone and gravel, along with a acrid lean toward chewed aspirins and zinc. This acrimonious stoniness rides into the finish, as is it meets with a dried mint leaf hop notion.
Medium-light in body, yet taut rather than lazy with a steady carbonation. Feel-wise, it is exactly where it needs to be. And actually, it becomes rather drinkable once the imbiber adjusts to the sensation of having a mouth full of liquid rock quarry.
I'm on the fence here. I recognize this immediately as flawed, but I also recognize something that could truly be noteworthy with any type of offsetting sweetness if this had paid further attention to the fruity hues it only feebly musters. Tweak the malt bill here and I think we are on to something.

Light colour, some spiciness in the nose. Wheaty, bit above average mouthfeel. Approachable drinkable saison, although airly run-of-the-mill saison, summery beer. Some citrus, not too spicey. Agree that Saaz hops was take it or leave it, as was the beer.

22oz bottle poured into a large Duvel tulip glass. Pours a murky dark orange color with an off-white head. The aroma has some funk in it, not a lot but it is there, with some spices and yeast. The taste is more peppery spices and funk with some earthy hops and yeast in the finish. The mouthfeel is light-medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Overall, Weyerbacher Muse Farmhouse Ale is a pretty solid domestic attempt at a classic Belgian style, but it really does not compare to some of the better Saisons brewed in Belgium.

Picked up a bottle in a mixed case at the brewery.

I had this shortly after Saison Dupont and there a decent amount of shared flavor off the bat. The initial Saaz hops flavor is on, but the malt backbone is a bit thicker and the carbonation is a little low. It tastes like there's a dirty little off-flavor in between the hops and malt, but really, this is a good American-made saison. stack it above the Yard's saison and below Ommegang's Hennepin.
