Pours a clear amber (very apple juice in appearance) with a 1/2 finger white head that dies but leaves some lacing.

Smells very fruity, almost too much so. An odd smell for a barleywine, and not necessarily one I am really digging. Touches of toffee malts in the nose as well.

The taste caries over this fruity component quite a bit. This is an odd beer. Barleywine may be a bad classification as this takes on some Belgian Tripel characteristics. Some green apple here. Acetaldehyde? Some toffee sweetness. Slightly yeasty. Not a good flavor profile overall. And the rye? Not really working for this beer. Bummer of a beer.

Mouthfeel is decent with medium to low carbonation and decent richness.

Drinkability is ok.

Not recommended. The flavor here should be much better. But, alas, Weyerbacher fails.

Poured into an imperial pint glass a clear lighter amber with a nice tight one finger white head that never completely settles with a few broken bits of lace behind.A mix of caramel and fruit in the nose like apricot and orange,a tinge of toasted grain as as a whiff of brown sugar.Not as hot as I expected it to be being Weyerbacher brews in alot of my experience with their "big" beers are just overly alcoholic and hot this isnt to bad,flavors are malt tilted and on the sweeter side up front big caramell and brown sugar with some sweet alcohol and white pepper,the hops are fruity with the before mentioned apricot and orange with just a ever so slight sour rye punch in the finish.Ok the alcohol starts to rear itself after a a few minutes and its getting warmer but it could be worse,decent.

A bomber served in a pint glass. A dark yellow/light orange color with a small head. Aroma was all rye bread. Very malty taste, noticeable alcohol which warmed me up quite well. The malt and the alcohol make this a real mouthful. Not sure I could drink a lot of these.

Appears hazy amber, thick head. Does not smell excessively malty or alcoholic. Somewhat creamy mouthfeel, carbonation is fine. Decent balance with slight sweet bubblegummy undertones. No malt load with little alcohol slap. Hops very adequate for the job. Pretty drinkable!

This one has been sitting in the fridge for quite a while. I was finishing up work for the afternoon, reached in for something, and this came out. It's the only one I have so figured now was as good as ever. I find this to be fairly subdued for a barleywine and one of the more drinkable versions of that style I've ever had. Head subsided a bit as I went with lots of lacing. The alcohol seems to come out as it warms but doesn't detract from the overall effect. All in all, a very nice beer.

22 ounce bomber, pours medium golden amber, near clear, under a lighter tan head, the highlight of which is the long standing tiny bubble film left behind, that leaves plenty of sheeting as well as sticky spotting. The nose is get is just perhaps rye bread, alcohol and some candied apple., This is some thick stuff, sort of like drinking very runny marshmellows. More alcohol noted, on the sweet side, with more candi apple picked up. I'll give it "differant", not my favorite Barleywine of all time...the label says it will become more complex with some aging...Right now its on the abrasive and solventy side. I'd like to try it again in a few years..

The beer pours a dark yellow color with a white head. The aroma is malty sweetness with some toffee, caramel and honey. The flavor is caramel and toffee malts with honey. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

poured into a flaired tulip glass fro a 12oz brown long neck bottle crimped cap.
Hazy, golden amber with a dense,creamy head leaving some nice lace curtians down the glass. Very lively looking the bubbles remined me of looking into a snow globe lots of stringing off the sided of the glass.

Could really smell the rye malts has a bisquityness also. Yeasty with fruityness has a green apple aroma. Very boozy,grain alcohol like aroma burning up the inside of my nostrils. Had a somewhat of a graham cracker like aroma also,would guess from the rye malts and a bit of spicyness.

Rye in the taste also,with a syrupy feel loaded with boozieness. Deep carmell sweetness with an overripe fruitiness had a sour/tart aftertaste with a warming effect from the alcohol.

Thick and chewy with some creamyness was rough and grainy. A sipper for sure had a hard time finishing this one. This beer needs some aging to mellow out a bit would like to try this after some cellaring

I guess I tried this one when it was first released back in 2007 but I wasn't thrilled by it and I felt the 50 % rye added a syrup texture that I wasn't ready for, overall not impressed first time around I wrote a review but wasn't happy with my description, well here it is about a year later and I ran into this bottle at a six pack shop in Moon called the Beer Store for around 4 bucks, a beergeeks second shot. Appears the same as I recall bright orange around the edges with a hazy copper middle to the body custard like off white pours out of the bottle and you can layer it and shape it as it falls from the bottle, kinda cool. Fine even lacing all around my chalice with each sip. Aromatics, what a sweet boozy mess upfront, citrus notes and perfume like accents follow close behind. Spicy rye develops as it warms really pungent sugary sweet barley and rye ridden alcohol notes that kind of singe the inner nostrils. Flavor contains just way too much booze and syrup sweetness for me to fully enjoy, peppery herbal spiced rye notes but alcohol and sweetness just coat the palate in a pretty unrelenting nature. Warming like some whiskey more citrus and tart though with sticky sugars resting on the palate, no doubt mouthfeel is full bodied. Drinkability overall comes across very inventive and intriguing but the concept is much better than the outcome of the brewing process and the one year aging. Another heavy hitter gotta love Dan Weirback and company for inventiveness and ballsy brewing methods that are definitely a cut above in the extreme department. overall drinkability is low for both flavors and desirability. Too much booziness for me to respect as a well brewed beer, it's hot still after a year.

Picked up a bottle at Bruisin' Ales in Asheville, NC.

Pours a cloudy gold-brown color with a one-finger off-white head. The head recedes fairly quickly into a wispy layer on top leaving light lacing.

Smells of sweet caramel malts with honey-drenched medium fruits.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Rich caramel malt flavors up front are joined by medium fruit flavors midway through the sip. Near the end hints of rye come in but I was expecting a bit more spiciness. The ending is mildly bitter.

Mouthfeel is very good. It has a great thickness with soft carbonation.

Drinkability is alright. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass but I'm not terribly sure about another.

Overall this was interesting but I would like to have tried this earlier on in its life in hopes that the rye contributed a bit more.

Rye Barleywine.
What a unique idea.

Poured a golden orange with a nice sticky full inch of off white foam.

Aroma is very floral and fruity with some nice sweet amber malt and just a hint of lemony citrus hops.

Taste is almost honey like sweetness mixed with some mostly and then a nice spiciness from the rye before it finishes to a lemon peel citrus hop bite. The honey sweetness (no, I don't think there is really honey in this brew) works really well with the rye spiciness creating a very unusual balance.
EDIT: As it warms, the apple gives way slowly to apricot.

Mouthfeel is creamy and almost thick across the tongue as you swallow. Alcohol is surprisingly missing from this high ABV brew.
EDIT: As it warms, alcohol becomes more apparent.

Congratulations Weyerbacher on your 12th Anniversary and I am very happy to celebrate with you by indulging in this wonderful example of your craft.
NOTE: These edits take place an hour and a half after I first opened this bottle. I absolutely LOVE a beer that can evolve into an entire evening.

Bright honeyed orange in colour, brilliant clarity. The quarter inch of off-white retains decently and laces the glass. There's rye bread and brown sugar in the aroma, as well as some dried fruit. It also has a boozy, alcoholic quality to it. There's a spicy edge to the flavour, and it tastes fruity; like raisins or prunes. There's a mild nuttiness similar to almonds and just the slightest hints of butterscotch and vanilla. There's a very faint woody bitterness in the finish. The alcohol and residual sweetness are noticeable, but neither are overpowering. The spiciness reminds me of the one roggenbier I've had, but seriously amped up. Full bodied with a sticky, syrupy mouthfeel and velvety carbonation. I was warned that this is a bit of a booze bomb, but maybe the three-plus years its spent in the bottle has mellowed it out a little, taming the alcohol somewhat. I found it pretty easy to make my way through a bomber of this aged barleywine. I feel like I lucked out finding a stray bottle of this in a convenience store back in June of this year. Delicious.

Weyerbacher- Twelve

A- Bright golden orange with a huge billowy head. Thick messy lacing all over the glass.
S- Boozy alcohol, spices, honey.
T- Sweet fruits like; golden raisins and orange rind combined with honey start this 1 off. Good carmelized malt and an oily pine hop presence appear in the body. Slight scotch like charcoaled wood in the end.
M- Sweet and cloying up front with a slight boozy bite. Big thick flavors thoughout meld into a smooth creamy finish. Warms you up.

Overall- The alc. is actually quite contained in this one. Good solid bold flavors and a creamy feel make this not just a sipper but a beer easy to gulp.

bomber> Postel Goblet

This brew has a gorgous look, Bright golden amber color, massive carbonation with spiraling, swirling bubbles that are going crazy! It forms a massive 3", tight, thick, creamy, soft head with some great looking swirls of foam at the top, as it dissipates slowly it forms mountinous clumps that looks like the Rocky Mountains. Very sticky lacing is formed as the levels slowly go down.

The aroma is a bit simple and slightly subdued, but it's a sweet malt, all spice with some peppery notes and a rye/wheatie scent.

The flavor is comparable to a Belgian Qaud or Tripel with it's big caramalized malt sweetness, but with a wheat and rye edge that mellows out the sweetness and tones down the complexity a bit. It's rather unique. The Magnum hops give this a earthy, herbal balance with a mild tangy effect. mildly fruity with cherries and subtle pineapple with an oak-wood finish.

The feel of this stuff is as amazing as the look, Very full-bodied feel for such a light looking beer, smooth, creamy, heady stuff. It's also mildly crisp and lively underneath the smooth head that gives it it's headiness. This stuff is a luxury ride and the rye gives a dry finish.

This is unique stuff, a Barleywine with a good amount of rye is very clever and works well. This is cutting-edge brewing.

Pours a clear yellow/gold with a large white foamy head. The head lasts and leaves great lacing. The smell is a little on the light side with floral,sweet grass,and some mild citrus. The taste is thick with vanilla,alcohol,nuts,citrus,and a certain "woodiness" to it. The m/f is very heavy with all the flavors mixing well. This is so thick it reminds me of flavored syrup at a coffee house. Not bad, just different. Give it a try.

Bomber into a pint glass. Many reviews said this was a bit hot, so I waited around a year, and I'm not sure how I even did that. But here it goes. Into a Chimay chalice.

Appearance: I figured the glass would be good for the bigger and sweeter aroma I was going to encounter, but it seems like the last few times I've used this glass, there's hardly any semblance of head or retention that forms. Is this normal with a chalice? Beautiful light copper color with hints of amber on the color side, though, with nice full carbonation seemingly shooting up from the bottom.

Smell: Rye with some huge candied sweet and sour fruit. Not your usual barley wine for sure. Tart apples, sour cherries, grapefruit, all coming together without the flavors from yeast, but I imagine mostly from the rye. A little heat from the booze too, but welcomed and complex.

Taste: Almost some Belgian-like or wild ale characteristics sans yeast, since the taste includes lots of balanced fruit and sourness -- minus the spritzy carbonation of something like a Belgian -- with sour cherries, tart apples, tart strawberries, sweet oranges, and some bitterness from what seems like some nice hops curbing the sweetness at the end. Finishes long, sweet, balanced by some sourness, and tons of flavors on the tongue. A pretty weird and wild barley wine.

Mouthfeel: Full and heavy-bodied with an almost candy-coated like carbonation. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's creamy, not chewy, full enough to be big without being cloying, and works well with the complexity of all the flavors.

Drinkability: Glad I waited to try this, though I can't necessarily confirm any changes. However, since there's a tad bit of heat both in the aroma and the taste from the booze, maybe it was full-on a year ago, and for me barley wines are something I try as much as possible to keep around for a year anyway, even though that usually doesn't happen. If you've laid one down, give it a shot now. My taste buds seem to be magnetized to pretty much every big beer Weyerbacher does at this point. And for that I'm thankful.

Boozy barleywine. I do not know if it would have been less so not aged, but I think yes. Rye is still there, mellow because aged. Malt is there. Altogether drinkable with a big supper, however unexceptional. A big head that dissipates as it warms. Above average mouthfeel. Neutral coloured body. The edges of the barleywine were brought in, only a little bitterness. Some sweetness there.

I could feel the viscosity of this beer as I poured it, translating through the glass, into my hand, and then on to my brain. Yet it looked as if I was pouring a golden lager! The head barely rose at first, so I gave it a little more distance between the bottle and the glass and - wham - that did it, maybe too much in fact, and I had to wait for the head to settle. It seemed to take forever, and it maintained a thick thumb of slightly yellowish off-white foam beneath an inch high wall of solid lace. Quite nice! The beer beneath was a clear deep-gold / amber with only an occassional bubble seen rising very slowly through the malt. The carbonation is there though, as it had churned like a pint of Guinness as I poured it.

The nose was bright and welcoming. It was malty and hoppy, but not really descript on either count. It was floral, fruity (loads of apples - maybe too much apple!), mildly sweetish with malt, and slightly spicy and grassy.

In the mouth it was quite full as expected, with a stunning creaminess. I'm not sure I've had a beer this thick since Big Hole Wisdom Cream Ale. The carbonation was just enough to keep it from becoming syrupy, and it crossed the palate like velvet.

The flavor was very much like the aroma in that it was bright and welcoming, combining the fruitiness of the yeast (again, tons of apples... acetaldehyde) with the very subtly caramelish-tinged rye-like malt, and grassy, perhaps citrusy hops. And it was decidedly spicy but I couldn't determine if that was just the rye, or a combination of the rye and the hops. It started malty, but not sweet (I thought of marzipan cheese), and then the fruitiness kicked in. By mid-palate it had started to foam up as it warmed, and the maltiness opened a bit, becoming honeyish. Honey and rye! Very nice. Throughout the hops kind of swirled in the background, omnipresent, but always allowing the malt to dominate. At the swallow the spiciness kicked in, and again, I'm not sure how much was due to the rye and how much was due to the alcohol that lingered into the finish along with some rye, fruitiness, and a snap of grassy hops.

As to drinkability, I have to give it a lot of credit as it's quite unique. But I was pretty much done with it after one ten ounce glass. It looked great, it smelled great, it tasted great... Still, it's a really nice sipper. I paired my second glass with some buttery triple cream cheese on an almost burnt slice of crusty bread and it was quite magnificent. And since it's such a heavy brew, I then went low-calorie with a small spinach salad drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with feta cheese and that worked well as it played off the tanginess of the cheese. It's just sweet enough and just spicy enough to work well with a lot of dishes, and I'm thinking that if I had another bottle I'd try it next to some pumpkin soup or even a bowl of mild chili. Worth trying!

12oz bottle via trade.

Cloudy amber pour with a nitro-looking one-finger white head that leaves thick foam and lacing.

The aroma is malty and sweet with a little caramel, rye, sherry, and light fruits.

The flavor is also sweet and malty with a caramel malt base. Fairly boozy without too much to it really. Rye, pear, and a strange menthol flavor.

From the mouthfeel of this, I really can't believe it's not nitro. Insanely full and smooth with very soft carbonation.

Overall, well, it's unique. Not a really big fan though.

Couldn't wait to try this one- my first rye barleywine. Weyerbacher never really dissapoints- this could be pretty good...

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a wine glass....

A- A goldeny orange color- think of a dark yellow color- not much head, some lacing. Noticable bubbles of carbonation throughout.

S- Smelled of sweet fruits, rye, and strong alcohol.

T- As a reviewer stated before me, this one tastes like a very strong belgian ale mixed with a barleywine. A lot sweeter than I expected- the first sip kind of threw me for a loop.

M- Mouthfeel was carbonation and alcohol- this one burned the hell out of my throat.

D- Big sipper here- because of the strong alcohol notes, I would not recommend finishing this in a sitting.

I still do not know what to think of this. I'm sure if I cellared one and popped it open at a later date it would taste much better once the alcohol settled. Glad I tried it though.

Note: This review is of a bottle maintained in darkness in my basement upright for approximately nine months.

A - Not opaque but light has some difficulty getting through. Golden brandy color with minimal but soapy head. It looks thick observing after the swirl.

S - Tart rye nose dominates. Some dried fruit like mango. Some yeast too.

T - Sweet, tart, twangy rye flavor with malt in background. Twanginess dominates with citrus flavor of orange and apricot.

M&D - Mouthfeel is nice due to viscosity but the tart twanginess is not attractive. Keeps it from being at all drinkable.

Too much rye in my opinion in this beer.

Well, I drank this beer in March 2008, and it is waaay too early. Can't fault a beer for being too young, they even suggest aging it on the bottle. Sure, I wish they were more clear about how this beer needs more time, but again, I can't fault them for having released it early.

Part of the problem is the rye. People think rye has this nice spiciness to it, because of breads that use it. Having homebrewed with it extensively, it really doesn't. Rye is more a mouthfeel, a slick oily mouthfeel. The spices in the bread comes from either the spices used (as in American rye breads) or from wild fermentation (as in German rye breads). It is a pretty boring grain aside from that slickness. That is why rye+hops=good, because the oily slickness coats the tongue and covers it in the hop oils.

So, combine a boring ingredient (rye) with another boring ingredient (american 2-row), lightly hop it, and use a fairly neutral yeast and what do you get? Not much. The whole medley is vaguely sweet mish-mash with a medicinal bite to it, Pretty unpleasant really, which is a pity since Weyerbacher normally delivers.

The overall impression is that of apple juice. Again, I just think I had this beer young. Let it sit for a few years and maybe it'll be something worthwhile.
