Botled in 2009
12oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours a deep amber color with a razor thin head that disappears immediately, some floaties swimming around

S- caramel and toffee up front, followed by dark fruit notes of raisin, fig, black cherry. Some peppery wheat undertones, as well as a bit of honey

T- malty and sweet, with caramel and toffee leading the way, followed by raisin, figs, plumb and a hint of chocolate. Mid-palate gives some peppery wheat, along with hints of clove and honey. The finish gives more sweet caramel and booze soaked dark fruits

M- medium body with low carbonation leads to a slick mouthfeel with just a hint of bite on the finish

O- I didn't get to try this fresh, but this how very low oxidation for a 13 year old beer, very enjoyable

Wow, when I realized this was 6 years old I was apprehensive of its aging, but very smooth. Sweet Honey, not too spicy, high alcohol. Nice surprise, I grabbed it off the shelf at the beer store without looking at the label to see the year.

Eyes - depending on the lighting, this brew pours a semi-opaque tan with no head (careful pour that still yielded some yeast sediment).

Nose - very much a barleywine smell. Super sweet, a bit of wheat.

Taste/body - Getting some sweetness of honey on the tip of my tongue. This beer is becoming so much better as it warms. I'm picking up brown sugar notes now. The ABV is hidden well, which is not a surprise this far out from bottling. Coats the tongue heavily and has light carbonation.

Overall, this beer has held up well for five years of God knows what conditions it saw before I bought it. I hate to be this way, but I can't rate it too high since the last 5 year old bottle of barleywine I had was 2009 Old Stock Cellar Reserve: a revelation of a beer that sets the tone for high ABV, aged beers for me. Still, great job by Weyerbacher.
