12 oz bottle at cellar temp poured into a bulb style glass. pours a dark hazy amber with orange hues showing and lots of sediment within, obviously bottle conditioned. has about a one finger head that fades pretty quickly to a patchy ring. leaves a nice lace on the glass.
spicy bannana hit the aroma first. but as i digged deeper alcohol was the main player here. grapes and sweetness also detectable.
some fusil, solvent like alcohol that you never seem to get used to. some spicy wheat flavors. a little clove. some grape like sweetness all around. starts with alcohol and finsihs with it. leaves some lingering flavors of wheat and alcohol.
big heavy body, a tad bit astringent at times. a nice carb. a burning alcoholic mouthfeel that really heats up your whole body, kinda like drinking whiskey. finishs pretty dry.
laughable drinkability. no way your really going to want another one of these unless you wanna get drunk quick, but if thats the case, theres much cheaper and/or tastier alternatives out there. i would prolly never pick this up again nor would i ever suggest it to anyone. this was my first wheatwine ever, but im pretty certain there are better examples of the style out there.

Botled in 2009
12oz bottle poured into a snifter
A- pours a deep amber color with a razor thin head that disappears immediately, some floaties swimming around
S- caramel and toffee up front, followed by dark fruit notes of raisin, fig, black cherry. Some peppery wheat undertones, as well as a bit of honey
T- malty and sweet, with caramel and toffee leading the way, followed by raisin, figs, plumb and a hint of chocolate. Mid-palate gives some peppery wheat, along with hints of clove and honey. The finish gives more sweet caramel and booze soaked dark fruits
M- medium body with low carbonation leads to a slick mouthfeel with just a hint of bite on the finish
O- I didn't get to try this fresh, but this how very low oxidation for a 13 year old beer, very enjoyable

Wow, when I realized this was 6 years old I was apprehensive of its aging, but very smooth. Sweet Honey, not too spicy, high alcohol. Nice surprise, I grabbed it off the shelf at the beer store without looking at the label to see the year.

Eyes - depending on the lighting, this brew pours a semi-opaque tan with no head (careful pour that still yielded some yeast sediment).
Nose - very much a barleywine smell. Super sweet, a bit of wheat.
Taste/body - Getting some sweetness of honey on the tip of my tongue. This beer is becoming so much better as it warms. I'm picking up brown sugar notes now. The ABV is hidden well, which is not a surprise this far out from bottling. Coats the tongue heavily and has light carbonation.
Overall, this beer has held up well for five years of God knows what conditions it saw before I bought it. I hate to be this way, but I can't rate it too high since the last 5 year old bottle of barleywine I had was 2009 Old Stock Cellar Reserve: a revelation of a beer that sets the tone for high ABV, aged beers for me. Still, great job by Weyerbacher.
