Extra sent to me by ottodyer, thanks! Not sure when this one was bottled. Enjoyed on 07/21/11.

A - Pitch black with hints of red around the sides. A one finger tan head appears and then recedes to a small layer across the top that remains. Leaves a nice wall of lacing. Good looking.

S - Classic porter. Bitter dark chocolate, roasted malts, light hoppiness, some coffee, very little chocolatey sweetness.

T - A little sweeter than the nose, which is welcome. All the above descriptions apply but the bitterness is just a little more balanced by a sweet milk chocolate. Finish is quite roasty and hoppy and dry.

M - The mouthfeel is nice and creamy with pretty good carbonation.

O - Overall, this is a good beer from Weyerbacher. I'm glad to have tried it!

Bottle purchased from Capone's in Norristown, PA.

Pours one shade from black with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a patchy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of lightly roasted malts with a hint of creaminess along with good amounts of dark chocolate.

Tastes similar to how it smells. The roasted malt flavors are a bit more fleshed out and crisp than the smell intimated and they are joined shortly by dark chocolate flavors. The roasted and dark chocolate flavors carry through to a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a smooth thickness with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall there was nothing special about this beer but everything about it was solid. Worth a shot.

Weyerbacher- Hotel

A- Dark murky black wth a thick bubbly head. Small light lacing.
S- Thick fudge chocolate with a touch of sweet smoke and caramel.
T- Sweet sugary bitter sweet chocolate malt, fudge, caramel, vanilla, and a light touch of smoke. Smooth creamy flavors make a solid flavorful body.
M- Very smooth with a sweet slightly dry chocolately feel.

Overall- Solid. Alc. undetectable.

Thanks to msulinski for sending this along as an extra! Pours out dark, almost black, with deep chestnut edges and a thick one finger tan head. Semi-sweet chocolate in the nose with a nice amount of roasted malt. More semi-sweet chocolate upfront in the taste with licorice, coffee and roasted malts rounding out the finish. A bit of a metallic quality in the aftertaste. Medium body, smooth and creamy with no real noticeable alcohol heat, makes this pretty drinkable. Overall this is another solid beer from a solid brewery.

A - dark brown with red highlights, creamy tan head. looks like the makings of a pretty hearty brew.

S - complex aroma of warm maris otter-like nuttiness, dark cocoa powder, light smokiness, warm dark caramel and figs. light notes of ethanol but only to a degree of supporting the malt profile.

T - almost an exact match to the aroma... dark cocoa and smoke linger as notes of nutty malts and dark fruits give a foundation to this brew. some fruity, citrus like flavors linger after each sip. the flavors tend to be a bit one dimensional. each flavors stands on its own without much of any robust character. when callings this imperial, it falls short of the name.

M - light carbonation with sturdy bitterness and void of any burnt astringency. fails to meet the bold viscous character of the imperial name. this one is incredibly smooth but falls way short of the bold mouthfeel that i was expecting.

D - i do admit, i am reviewing this beer against its name (and to a degree doesn't everyone? who said you shouldn't judge a book by its cover??) and it most certainly falls short. However, this is a very drinkable strong porter with a lot of good attributes and is a decent beer. If you are looking for the next big brew from Weyerbacher, do not look here, this is slightly above average at best.

From the Brewers Select (NATO alphabet) series. Sampled 11/28/10 from 12oz bottle to tulip. $6.50 for the single.

A: A second wind head rises to a height of two fingers. Creamy in texture and light brown in color, this cap has great retention and eventually deflates into an everlasting collar. The body is very dark brown, if not black, and so opaque that no light passes through, even along the edges of the glass. Lacing is fair.

S: Heavily malted with roasted aromas dominating, mostly chocolate and coffee. Piney hops play a supporting role and charred woody aromas with a touch of fruitiness, mainly cherry and plum. Notes of alcohol in the background.

T: Flavors of bitter chocolate, cocoa powder, coffee and fudge hit your tongue first with subtler contributions of charred wood and soy sauce. The robust flavor does a fine job of burying any alcohol that was present on the nose. Long flavor, moderately sweet with a light acrid bitterness from the chocolate and coffee.

M: The gentle effervescence creates a soft and luxurious mouthfeel. Medium body, creamy texture with a certain grittiness to it. Mild alcoholic heat is noticeable in the back of the throat.

D: Damn fine brew and worthy of being a fixture in Weyerbacher's production schedule. There seems to be some room in their portfolio for a porter too...

Appearance: Pours super dark reddish brown, but appears incredibly black. Short lived tan head. Don't pour vigorously.

Aroma: Huge roasted malt aroma, with some chocolate notes.

Taste: Big roasted malt flavor, the chocolate from the nose is here but not overly so. Decent enough hop bitterness to level this thing out. Not sure what to say really, roasted malt, big flavor, delicious. Its not aggressive like a Gonzo Porter its better balanced. I prefer aggressive but I think many will probably like the better balance.

Mouthfeel: Big in body, borderline chewy. Stays with the tongue a while. Crisp enough for a big porter.

Drinkability: Goes down easy, I'm considering another.

Was it worth the trip? Totally, I had a fun time driving up to the brewery with my bro in law and I thoroughly enjoyed Weyerbacher. It had a small town brewery feel to it, so its not unlike being at home. The beer is great and I'm putting some in the cellar to age.

dark brown/black that let just the slightest light through. Small cream colored head gave was quickly leaving just a bit around the edge till the bottom. Smell was total caramel chocolate malts. A hint of a spiceness as well. Taste was very nice, the nice malts come through beutifully and the mouthfell is almost perfect, goes down very smooth and has a very nice, long lingering almost hopped back. This is a very nice brew

Pours a muddy brown color. Tan head holds together for a few minutes then fades to a thin layer. Nice patches of lace.

Bittersweet dark chocolate in the nose, a bit chalky. Roasted malt. Perhaps a good dose of citrusy hops.

Roasty malt, not much sweetness. A hint of chocolate lots of citrusy, piney hops. A nice milk chocolate finish.

Medium body, a slight creamy feel. Alcohol hidden pretty well. Nice beer, on the hoppy side.

a: deep garnet in color, layered with a coating of mocha colored carbonation that hangs around awhile before scaling back to a light ring

s: smooth, complex body includes coffee roasts and chocolaty black malt, earthy hop profile, lots of bittersweet chocolate and dark sugars, some vanilla and sweet spice in the back

m: full bodied with a light-medium carbonation

t: surprisingly good - I took this one on blind and had no idea what to expect going in, the smooth chocolates, vanilla presence, and woody spice finish gave me the false perception of some sort of oak aging, light roast coffee and dark sugars linger after each swallow

d: perhaps a bit limited by the abv but a pint was no problem

Thanks to corby112 for including this one as an extra. Poured into a pint glass.

A- Pours a brownish-black that is almost a chestnut-ruby color on the edges where some light passes through. Roughly 2-finger, light tan head that looks mighty creamy, not great lacing left when dissipated.

S- Chocolate, roasty, very earthy. As it warms up a bit I am getting a huge sweet caramel aroma.

T- There are some great things going on here and some that are, well, not so great. Upfront, there is a nice roasted bitterness, which eventually gives way to a really nice caramel-dominated, sweet-ish finish. The problem I have is that in between the two ends, I'm getting a bitter, metallic flavor. This is starting to fade as the beer warms up (could be me getting used to it or something else entirely.) I want to say that the earthiness is yielding an almost pumpkin-like flavor, but I'm not sure if I can quite peg it down that specifically. A little bit of heat coming through, but more so on the exhale than the initial taste.

M- Has a nice creamy mouthfeel for a higher abv porter and before that a nice tingle of carbonation on the tongue. Nothing special here, but definitely a well made porter.

D- The metallic taste made this lower than it might have been. Very sessionable for an 8.2% porter. I would not have guessed. Virtually no heat except for a slight bite on exhale. I can't say I would seek this one out, but I might order it on tap if I was looking to have a porter and it happened to be on at the bar.

L: Pours a deep dark brown/black color with a medium sized and medium bodied head that laces the glass nicely on the way down.
S: Smells of deep roasted malts, some hints of chocolate, coffee, and caramel in the nose probably from the malts that were used.
T: Tastes a lot like the nose - deep roasted chocolate malts, some flavors of coffee and caramel in there as well. A nice slight hop finish to this one kept it crisp without killing the power of the porter.
M: Very smooth, warming, perfect amount of carbonation.
D: Very drinkable, this is an excellent rendition of the Porter and it really blends all the flavors very well together. I couldn't tell the gravity just by drinking it.

On-tap at The Armsby Abbey, Worcester, MA.

Presented in stemmed tall tulip, a 1" dark tan head over the opaque dark brown/black brew. Lasting head produces coating lace. Aroma is roasty chocolate. Taste starts with rich malt and chocolate, goes lightly fruity in the middle, with a slightly chalky close. Mouthfeel is velvety smooth, and drinkability is quite reasonable. Not a bad porter.

Got this elusive new beer thanks to msulinski.

A: Pours a large 2 finger head that is pretty thick and frothy with a dark but not very dark head. Super dark color with pretty much no light coming through. It also leaves a nice lacing on the sides of the glass as it gets drunken.

N: I could smell this thing from the next room over as I poured it (since I obviously poured it from the next room over...) umm, anyways. Lots of roasted malts to start this thing. A nice dark roast that is, accompanied with a touch of coffee. Some chocolate malts, but not really an aroma of chocolate itself. Some darker fruits hint their way through, but not as much as the rest of the aromas. I almost get a touch of a whisky aroma, but that may be my brain on whisky and beer, but with that whisky aroma is a slight alcohol. I also do get some light crisp ale like aromas that are prevalent in good ales, but not usually as much in porters. Then a slight creamy aroma rounds it off.

T: Starts very rich and creamy, and very porter like. Lots of roasted malts start it off, with slight espresso and coffee. Here more chocolate flavor comes out, from the malts, a little bakers chocolate and slight creamy milk chocolate. Some lighter dark fruit flavors touch the tongue. Also a very slight alcohol tingle with warmth invades the tongue as it sits around in my tasting. A slightly sweet taste. An interesting bitterness starts to come through, with a touch of... almost like an orange rind flavor, weird.

M: Pretty thick and creamy, good carbonation. Has a nice weight on the tongue.

F: It gets a little more fruity with some fig, orange, and touches of mint and tobacco hit at the beginning of the finish. It also dries off a bit and gets pretty bitter. A slightly spicy and earthy hop taste comes through more on the finish than the initial taste. Lingering roasted malt and bitter chocolate flavors seem to give a nice long finish but are very pleasant. The creaminess can be felt, and tasted, long after the sip is done. This is a nice beer that I can enjoy quite a bit, esp during the winter. I'll drink 2-3 now and age the rest for a year and see how they come out.

Update... 4/20/14, now about 4.5 years old cracking open a new bottle. Nice head still surprisingly. Nose is slightly oxidized and yeasty aged, toasted brown malts and caramel, little cocoa. Lost most of it's pizzazz on the nose at least. Taste is also fairly oxidized, lots of caramel and toasty brown malts, little roast, stale bread, yeast, etc. The oxidation has really taken a beating on this beer. Not much of anything left unfortunately. I think it aged nicely after a year or two, but not so much anymore.

I am extremely proud of my part in this beer! Before you get too excited, I just suggested a style when talking with their brewer about this series. Understand that I am a retired US Navy sailor with a LOT of qualifications under my belt, one of the earliest being phone talker, which involved memorizing the phonetic alphabet, which enables people to communicate under duress, even when trying to spell words or enunciate single letters. Think of how close "F" and "S" sound or "P" and "T", but now try "Foxtrot" vs. "Sierra" and "Papa" vs. "Tango" and you get the idea. This will be a 26-beer series saluting the phonetic alphabet and when I heard about it, I reasoned that "H - Hotel" should be a porter, just as many finer hotels have their porters. Bingo!

My pour got me an easy two fingers' worth of rocky mocha- brown head exploding with CO2 bubbles. The color was a deep, dark brown with cola highlights at the extreme edges. Nose was of bittersweet chocolate, very roasty, along with a burnt smokiness. I became anxious to try it! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full with a smoky chocolate taste on the tongue. I attended a Beer & Chocolate Pairing at our local Iron Hill almost two weeks ago and this reminded me of some of the chocolate we tried. Understand, I am not usually a sweets guy, but the chocolate we had that night was not especially sweet and neither was this beer. Instead, the beer was rich and bittersweet, especially on the finish. I hope that as they brew these "Small Batches", that they will keep an eye towards revisiting some of them. This seems to be a good candidate for just such a re-visitation. One drawback, though, is the relatively high ABV. Perhaps it could be ramped back just a wee bit? Remember, I have to lug the Jones' bags up to their room after this.

Pours a dark ruby red in color with a mocha colored head that lingers. Taste is full bodied with hints of roasted coffee and malts. Hints of chocolate throughout. Finishes smooth with an earthy vanilla aftertaste that is not overwhelming tart as one would suspect. Goes down quite smooth for its size, no chewiness, easy to drink, and refreshing as porters go.

On tap at Max's today.

The beer pours very dark brown color with OK head retention and lacing. Don't get a lot on the nsoe, just some light coffee, vanilla and chocolate. Flavors replicate the nose, except there is plenty of flavor in this imperial porter. There's also something of an underlying saltiness, as well as some noticeable alcohol. For this beer's abv., I'm surpirsed by the amount of alcohol I can detect in this beer. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, and drinkability is fair. As noted above, the alcohol is a bit more detectable then I like, which detracts from the beer's drinkability.

An OK porter from Weyerbacher. Not sure I'll want to order this one again.

A-Deep, dark, reddish brown with thin tan head that reduced to a thin veil and left decent lace.

S-Nice roasted malt in the forefront with subtle notes of cherry, chocolate and earthy hops.

T-Mildly sweet caramel and roasted notes up front with good, biting eathy hops and a touch of chocolate and sour cherry twang in the finish.

M-Medium bodied with good lingering roast and hop bitterness.

D-A solidly crafted robust porter. I liked the roastiness and subtle sour twang. I could use a few points less of ABV to make this one a multiple beer but I certainly enjoyed my pint.
