MY 100TH REVIEW kinda wish i couldve had a little better beer than this for the 100th, but the next 2 should make up for it.
pours a hazy glowing orange amber color. big fluffy head, almost pure white faded to a ring half way through the glass. just a touch of lacing.
in the aroma your hit with big bubblegum and bananna from the yeast, some spiciness, floralness, from the hops i imagine. the aroma almost reminds me of the flouride u used to get from the dentist when you were a kid.
for the taste you get some of the belgian yeast character, flouride taste, and then you get a lot of american hops. the 2 flavors combined create a kind of spiciness, almost peppery if you will. finishs a dry bitter spicy flavor that lingers. seems more like a belgian APA. doesnt seem to have the soft fluffy goodness of the true belgian PAs. for this i go down in the score a little, still a very good beer.
smooth mouthfeel, medium body. good carb. but just not the same as an authentic belgian. good drinkability.

This was based on opening a 2010 Zotten. Aged pretty well. Still carbonated. No oxidation, etc. Nice Belgian yeast character. Enjoy getting these old beers.

disclosure: bad experiment in ageing. but found it, decided to try it. - pours deep amber with a white thin head that quickly disappears. cloudy with visible yeast sediment. aroma is a combination of different elements of oxidation. green apples, estery/solventy and horse blanket. there's no hop presence left. so the remaining flavors are just malt sweetness and maybe some candy sugar. surprisingly the oxidation from the nose, does not carry heavily into the flavor. its almost all malts like a Scottish ale. body has thinned out, carbonation is also very light and there is an astringency that borders on harsh. despite all this, it finishes dry and only the above mentioned harshness lingers on. - way past its prime

I love the Verboten. It's a smooth beer with a hoppy finish. It pours a translucent bronze (light amber), and smells faintly hoppy. It tastes sightly sugared and sweet, but with a disappointing yet decent finish. The bitter aftertaste doesn't mesh with the initial smoothness, and it detriments the beer's overall taste.
Regardless, it's a great beer.
It goes down easy like a lager, with a lot more flavor.
Drink if you want a great Weyerbacher beer, and an interesting hybrid between sweet and slightly hoppy.

L: An amber pour with a slight orange tint and a light haze supports a quickly receding 2” off-white foam collar. S: Estery aromas rise form the glass. T: This yeast driven beer features fruit, plum, apricot, orange, and some caramel and toffee with a moderate bitterness. F: Medium body and medium high carbonation. O: A well balanced and drinkable beer.
