Had been wanting to hit up Lukas Liquor for some time, and finally got an opportunity when I was back in KC last time. First off, the place is huge. Tons of wine, liquor and beer. It really amounts to a liquor warehouse, so the atmosphere/vibe isn't the best. They have a long cooler where they store half of their beer, and the rest is on shelves. Having half of the beer refrigerated is a plus. The selection is definitely the best part about the store. Great selection of Missouri and Kansas breweries, with a good representation of breweries around the country. Import selection was pretty standard. Nothing really stood out to me on that front. Didn't really interact with the store employees, so can't say much about customer service. Overall, a good store. Not the best, but the selection alone will bring me back at some point.

Lukas has moved across the street to a much larger store. Very large extensive beer selection, seemed to have most everything available on the Kansas side of KCK. Crane was what I was after, and they had cases stacked deep of every variety. Staff on the floor were scarce in the beer aisles, but a cashier was able to quickly check inventory for me when I asked. Parking lot is big, but the holiday rush had it completely full. Some side spots around the back of the store, and additional parking at the tire shop adjacent to Lukas. This is my main go-to store when in Overland Park, usually combined with a trip to MO to round things out. I've been coming here 10 years and the new store is a vast improvement in selection and organization.

2010: 4.15
Much improved service and selection than my last visit. Plenty of staff around to help out, stocking the beer aisle and directing traffic. Nice limited seasonals from Odell including a couple Woodcuts, Saboteur, and more. Tallgrass cans, Weston, Cathedral bombers, even Drie Fonteinen Oude Gueuze.

2008: Selection seems to have improved some, even though I didn't see any staff in the beer aisle. They had 2 cooler doors of micro singles for mixed sixers. They were organized and labeled by style which was helpful. Imports were fairly run of the mill (to their credit they had a few Nøgne Ø), but the micro selection seemed to be their niche. Found Tallgrass bottles here, also Jolly pumpkin, Ballast Point, Southampton, Saranac, and a few others. Found some open cases of craft stuff past the aisles on the floor that was worth a look, including Goose Island BCS for $18.99, which is the cheapest i've seen.

Stopped by this Lukas location after an earlier impressive stop at Royal Liquors on 103rd. I've been here before, and although there were a few things that couldn't be found in IL, (such as Boulevard, Flying Monkey, New Belgium) nothing really surprised me. All the imports were exactly the ones to be found back home at every Binny's or equivalent store.

They do have a medium-sized selection to their credit, but again, the quality isn't especially high. Didn't see much if any limited release stuff, and the "beer aisle" is a mere 1/10th of the actual store space, to the left of the entrance.

They were pretty busy, it was the day before Christmas, but no one was on the floor to help out in the beer section. Actually this has been the case both times i've been here.

Overall, go here if you are looking for something specifically cheap or common, like a case of Beck's. The import & craft selections left much to be desired.

If you can't make it over to the big brother store at 135th and State Line then this is the place to buy beer in Johnson County.

Conveniently located just a couple of miles south of I-435 and Metcalf.

They have a very respectable selection of import and domestic micros to keep most beer aficionados happy. They are regularly adding new beers/breweries and I can always find something new or interesting.

Staff are very helpful and you can tell they genuinely love beer. I regularly get at least one offer for help when I go in.

If the KCMO store was a little farther away this would definitely be my go to store for beer in KC.

Cheers!

Was in Kansas visiting family and was going to drive directly by this place so I decided to pop in. First thing is first, this is a liquor store that has some beer in it, not a beer wine store. About 80% of the store is devoted to non-beer items. The 20% that is, is very impressive. You are allowed to make a mix a six pack for 9$. This is cool.

The service is fine, I didn't really ask for help, but they were available for it and they seemed reasonably staffed.

There were several rows of just free bombers and bottles organized by region / country. There was two rows of US and a row of Europe / Asian beer. Nothing too odd / rare, just hundreds of solid beers. I ended up buying about a dozen beers and I would definitely go there again if the opportunity presented itself.

Stopped by here to scope out selection on the KS side. There was a lot to choose from with three large rows of craft/micro beers and at least 10 cooler doors.

One thing I liked was that all IPA's are refrigerated to help with shelf life. But there is only 1 door of IPA's, there are a couple in the door to the left of it.

Prices are reasonable, case prices are AMAZING for most micros.

Service is okay. I didn't need help, but I did see them walking around with other people helping them find different beers and helping to explain the differences between styles.

Wow, there is a huge difference between these two stores. While I do like Lukas on the KS side, it's just not as good as its Mo counter part.

The Overland Park Lukas liquors has a good selection but it seems like a lot of their stuff just sits on the shelves. They have quite a few dusty bottle sections. There is only a small section of build your own six packs and relatively small selection of single bottles. What this store does have is a couple of different brands that are available in KS and not MO. Jolly Pumpkin, Ballast Point, Saranac and Lost Lake are all available over on the other side of the state line.

My biggest problem with this store is they just don't know their stuff very well. It seems like they get as lost as I do, when looking for certain beers. The couple of employees I have talked too (including one of their beer experts) had really no idea what they were getting and what they might be getting in the future including things like seasonals and new brews coming into the state. These are things that the MO store always keeps up with.

All in all its worth going across the state line to get a couple great brews that aren't available in MO yet, but if these brews were available in MO, I would probably just hit up their location at 135 and Washington.

Amazing how a store can have the same name as another that is only a few miles away, yet be so different. It's not their fault - it is just that so much good stuff isn't distributed to Kansas.

I have no real problem with this place - the beer was treated OK, and I haven't noticed any beers that were horribly past their drink-by dates. Service was courteous and generally helpful, even if the beer knowledge has been spotty. But most everything I can find here is available in Wichita without the 2.5 hour drive.

I'd say you should do yourself a favor and stay on eastbound 435 that extra couple miles, hop off on State Line, and head South to a much better Lukas. Weren't you thirsting for some Bells Oberon, O'Fallon 5-Day IPA, or any number of brews from Schlafly that aren't distributed to KS? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Stopped here after I went to the Luka's in Kansas City and, after that store, this was a letdown.

There is more that is distributed to Missouri I suppose. There was not a great breadth here of mid-west beers but it's not bad. Lots of locals, a decent selection of imports and most importantly, the ability to make your own mixed sixers.

Service was fine and I didn't see a lot of dusty bottles.

If you're in the neighborhood, stop by and check it out but if you have to get off the interstate anyway, drive to the Luka's in KC, it only a few mile away from this store.

It took me a good ten minutes to find Lukas as it was tucked away in the shopping plaza and further south then I was expecting. No biggie. The store was huge and there is plenty of parking. We visited shortly after noon on a Saturday. The store was packed with Nebraska and Sooner fans (Big 12 Championship Game). I was overwhelmed at the number of people franticly looking for cheap beer and crappy wine. The aisles with good beer were basically void of people.

I came to Lukas for Avery, Great Divide, and Flying Monkey Stout. I scored everything I wanted but found little else that excited me. I don’t know if I didn’t look hard enough but there were lots of beers I know that are available in KCK that Lukas did not have. No Unibroue and few B. United Imports. I did like seeing all the Wetten Imports though. Of course Boulevard, Boulder, New Belgium and the like were well stocked. This store was heavier on domestic craft over quality imports. Hell, in reality this store is heavy on wine, liquor, and macro beers…

The mix and match cooler had smattering of “new to me” imports but nothing really jumped out. I did mix a six-pack of IPAs though.

The checkout service was great. The guy chatted with me about the Flying Monkey Stout and was helpful packing my beer and such. It was busy but he handled it very well. Kudos.

Would I return? I doubt it. This store is out of the way for me. IMO, it is easy for me to shop for Avery and GD in Lawrence (after stopping at Free State). I think from now on I’ll stay in KCMO for my beer needs.

Like the all Lukas Liquor Stores, the $7.99 build your own six pack deal is very attractive to anyone who is interesting in sampling a great variety of beers at a good price. I built three sixpacks, myself.

The selection is great because they carry many great Colorado beers (Avery, Great Divide, Boulder, Left Hand). They also have some good ones from the West Coast (Mendocino, Lost Coast, BridgePort). Plus, a pretty good collection of big beers (Oak Aged Yeti, Salvation, etc.) Their Beligian beer selection is pretty good though not as big as the selection at Lukas in Ellisville (St. Louis).

The quality of beers appears good. Dates on bottles are very current. I wish they could have more of the six packs and big bottles in coolers, though.

Service was okay. No one came to help me, but I didn't need any help. They were quick to check me out and pack the beer into a larger box.

As someone who lives in a state that doesn't get Great Divide, Avery or Boulder, it was heaven for me.

Don't confuse this store with the one on the Missouri side. There is a big difference as to what beers are available on each side of the state line. That being said, this is one of the better liquor stores on the Kansas side.

It is a very big store with a couple of aisles devoted to beer. They seem to carry most of the beers available in Kansas. Plenty of American Micros and a good selection of German, British, and Belgians. Not a lot of beers available cold. They let you build your own six pack with cooler space for singles. Prices are decent.

I haven't asked any of the staff beer questions, but every once in a while a checker seems knowledgable about beer.

The real strength of this store is its wine selection. If you like wine they have a great selection. The liquor selection is fairly extensive as well. They also have a humidor in the party shop with a decent variety of cigars.

Stopped in with a friend who wanted to checkthis place out. It's very large warehouse style building, with an extensive wine and liqour selection. The micro brew selectionwas decent, with New Belgium, Goose Island, Boulder, O'Fallon and pretty much the entire Great Divide line up. The imports selection was better than expected. They had the usuals with Sam Smith's, Young's, Paulaner, and Guinness. But they also had a few Deleriums, Samiclaus, Gouden Carolus, La Chouffe and others I can't remember. There were also a couple bottles of some French ciders.

Service was pretty much nonexistant. There were no employees walking the floor to see if anyone needed any help, and after I tracked someone down, they did not seem to know much about their selections. This was not just for the beers, as my friend had some wine questions that went unanswered.

All said, I will be stopping in the next time I'm in the area.

I dropped by Lukas Liquors on the way to visit W.J. McBrides. It is quite a large store carrying a huge selection of liquor and wines along with a decent beer selection.

Some highlights include New Belgium, Goose Island, Mactarnahan's, and local Boulevard. The rest of the selection was composed of common imports and a large focus on domestic light beer.

Service seemed fairly impartial--there were few employees for a place this large. The size of this place increased my hopes a bit, and I was disappointed. For a better selection in the area, head on over to Gomer's.

After seeing a previous review on this store, I decided to go and check it out. Living on basically the other side of the metro area, it takes a while to get there but it was worth it.

The store is about the size of a decent-sized grocery store, but instead filled with beer, wine, liquor, and cigars of all types. I quickly spot the beer coolers and was a bit scared when I saw no more in the cooler than I see anywhere else. But then I found the regular warm aisles which had many new selections from home and abroad.

They had plenty of choices of about any style I was looking for. I'd give the selection a 5 as soon as they carry imperial stouts and put a little more better beer in the coolers. The build-your-own six pack for only $6.99 is a nice touch at a nice price. In fact, everything was priced better than I've seen elsewhere.

I didn't really require any service while looking around but everyone I interacted with was very friendly.

It was worth the trip, but I'll need to stock up so I don't have to do it too often. Open one of these on the Missouri side of the KC area and they get all 5s LOL.

This block long liquor warehouse has the biggest beer selection I've found in KC. If you'd like to try sampling new brew, you can fill a sixpack of single bottles for a very reasonable set price. High turnover and good service plus big selection = killer combo.
