It's a typical European lager that does what any typical European lager does. It's a crapload better than Bud, Miller or Coors. If you don't agree, grab you MAGA hat, go out, drink some Clydesdale piss and watch Fox news.

Glass: Clear 15.25-oz. pilsner
From: Trader Joe’s in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif.

Picked this up on a recent trip to Trader Joe’s in Mission Valley. Still new to this style with this just being my third review of a Munich Helles Lager. Did not look at the ratings of this until I got home and let’s just say they are not good. But $1.00 for 16.9 ounces, so let’s have some fun.

Poured a pale clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of rocky white head. Lots of slow moving bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good watery, spotty lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled grain, metallic notes, buttered corn, cereal, herbal, dark green apple, pear and bready malts. (Smell - 3.25)

Taste followed the nose, but much worse overall. Got grainy metallic notes, cereal, buttered corn, raw veggies, dry grass, dark green apple, light pear and barley. (Taste - 2.50)

Light body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, metallic finish. (Feel - 2.50)

Did not like this beer. Even for the price, would probably not purchase it again. Below average. (Overall - 3.75)

Some beers you buy because they are great or outstanding, and others because they represent a great value in an everyday brew. Henninger's lager in the pint cans is the latter of those two. The local Liquor Barn chain store had the six-packs of pints for $6. I divide beer into everyday brews and weekend specials. If you look at the price, it's about like paying $4.50 for a six of something else, which puts you in Budweiser range around here, maybe even Natty Light land. Would I rather drink this? Oh, hell yeah. Is it my favorite? No, but at this price, I'm perfectly happy given most of the things I really like are in the $9-$15 range, or more. In the end, we pick beers because we really like them, and avoid ones we think aren't worth the money. $8? Hmmm, maybe, maybe not. $6 for six pints of good (not great) German brew, that's a helluva buy to me.

Bottle: a stumpy 660mL green bottle with a macro German label. A bit average-looking. Purchased on sale at Liquorland - 3 for $12.

Appearance: poured into a pilsner glass - amber yellow with plenty of carbonation across the profile. A two-finger white head rises before settling to a thin cap. Fairly solid lacing.

Aroma: a clean and refreshing aroma of floral and vegetal hops, with bread and pale malts.

Taste: grass hops with that slight vegetal again - very European lager. The pale malts tag along.

Aftertaste: a grainy astringency comes through on the finish, somewhat diminishes the summer hop brightness.

Mouth feel: pretty spot-on for a German lager - moderate in feel with a moderate- to- higher carbonation. Carries the flavours well, and has plenty of drinkability, as I am finding out as I polish off the third 660mL bottle.

Overall: a perfectly acceptable middle-order lager beer. I do like a German lager - second only to our best in Oz, of course. A good one to sit back, listen to Gordon Lightfoot and chill (hypothetically speaking). A good price for a decent lager. I'll have it again.

Appearance: Clear goldish yellow, thin head disappears quickly.

Smell: Corn, grain, and grass, a little bit skunky.

Taste: Corn, grain, and grass.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, dry, and smooth. No real aftertaste to speak of, other than a hint of skunkyness.

The Verdict: Meh. This tastes like Germany's answer to Bud Light. Drinkable but forgettable.
