Wonderful cascading head settling to a quarter-inch cream colored layer over hazy amber-brownish very gently (I'm talking English draught carb levels) carbonated liquid. The nose is malt lover's dream, lush, thick sweet malt with slight biscuitiness melds with an afterthought of delicate flowery hoppiness. Bready, caramel-like chewy malt and subdued yet palpable yeasty fruitiness coats the tongue until washed away by a wave of just sublime hoppiness...perfect harmony going on here! The flavors combine with the alcoholic esters and morph into a superbly balanced taste sensation, not to sweet, nor too bitter, just...perfect. Finishes hoppy/dry after the initial malt fades away. To those cellaring these, break 'em out, they are at their prime.*

Second beer in my Old Salty vertical thanks to Shapudding.

This vintage poured more of a reddish brown color than the 2000 version. Still not much of a head and carbonation was lower. Aroma is much stronger on the alcohol but its nicer as well. More of a brandy aroma than just fusel alcohols. A bit of spicy hops and some chocolate and raisins in there as well. Taste and mouthfeel work together quite enjoyably. Lots of thick syruppy viscosity brought forth dark fruits and a strong alcohol precense. Finish leaves a little residual sweetness. This beer hit me, it was intense, but I really enjoyed it overall and I think it's still good, maybe at its prime. Get some if you can.

This came in a 12 oz bottle with the usual salty dog on the label. This appeared a murky reddish brown with a painstakingly slow forming white cap of bubbles. It takes the head more time to appear than it sticks around for and there is no lace. The nose is a sweet malt bomb with a strong ripe fruit presence. Notes of alcohol became more apparent as this warmed. The taste is similar to the aroma with sweet malts dominating. There are strong ripe fruit notes with some candy like sweetness. A slight hint of molasses and alcohol. This ends on a sweet note with a touch of warmth. Mouthfeel was a stick sweet full one. Drinkability is good too as the alcohol and sweetness both stay in check and blend for a quite pleasant taste. For the most part this smelled and tasted like the previous years but the head was lacking on this one. Thanks to slander for the chance to check this out.

Brownish, cider colored with no head to it, but this was at a tasting party and the bottle had been open for a little while... so maybe there had been a little more carb earlier? Great warm sherry scents, alcohol and honey. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. At the first sip I feel like I should be reclining in front of a fireplace with a snifter. Nice... Very warming.... Cream sherry and a bit of dark fruits. Burnt toast hiding a bit in the background. Great barleywine offering from Heavyweight.

Highly enjoyable! Even with the high %, I could sit back and easily knock back a good amount of these! So freeeeaaaakin good!

2001 Label: Eight malts and Challanger Hops. HEAVYWEIGHT'S second BWSA version.

Cloudy opaque orange pour. No head covering, just a slick white halo, razor thin ring.

Plenty of time to air out. Awl-kee-hawl up front and banana esters. Matured BWSA. 3 years to mellow courtesy of the brewery.

Smooth, dry, pancakes Buisquik and a little syrup. Acidic, awl-kee-hawl almost rum. Warmed up fast. Most similar to Sierra Nevada Big Foot, but a wee bit rougher. Not nearly as balanced.

Last swigs: Think i'd go for Sierra Big Foot, but a decent barleywine, nonetheless.

Beer is good. Happy strong beering.

Pours sticky, hazy red amber hue wit no head but tiny spots of lace on the glassware.
Aroma of enormous peat and malt and some caramel tones.
Flavor is a big-time diacetyl hit with some lightly smoked peat and some sweet caramel. Interesting mint note also picked up.
Mouthfeel is sticky sweet moving to a somewhat grainy middle and a stunningly spicy finish. Alcohol permeates throughout.
Drinkability is very good, this puppy is 3 years old and honestly probably just past its prime. To me it as morphed into something beyond beer, almost a combo scotch and beer with the smoothness and havy peats notes. Heavyweight ontinues to amaze me.
Thanks to Davo for this beauty

round two of the salty vintage pack. this one pours a slightly cloudy amber colour with a beige head that was than the one on the 2000, but still small in size. smells of bubble gum, caramel and other candy, butter and malt. much sweeter. nice. the taste is quite similar to the smell but with earth tones on top of the sweetness, along with a bitter maltiness and alcohol warmth throughout. this one is not as smooth and drinkable as the 2000, but it's just different overall. at the same time, it's just as good.

A murky amber-ruby color, this, like the 2000 vintage, showed very little action despite a vigorous pour. It did have a thin and wide lace and drops of stain left about.

Smelled of grapes and dates, as a roasty malt washed over a sweet brandy-ish cover. Had some nutty accents, caramel, and toffee. Tasted of cherryish malt and woody tones, as well as some hoppy burnish that was a bit strange. Also detected grapes and dates, becoming strong with time. Its verdant hops flavor was dying out while being attacked by the nips of alcohol and the growing buttery flavor. Unfortunately, this mix makes for a messy finish. Great mouthfeel is slick and nice.

I think it needed a little more time, but not a bad experience by any means. A heady alcohol content, too.

2001. Screw cap Heritage bottle. Easily one of the great barleywines of our time - just give it time. This beer needs to age a bit. Slightly aged examples give an irresistable nose chock full of caramel, toffee, malt, and slight molasses. The body is full and the flavor even more so. Rich, round, robust - but never too bitter! A brilliant example of a strong and malty barleywine.
