was fortunate enough to catch a taste from a sample bottle of this not too long ago and was not super impressed, but the buzz was that the draft was pretty tasty so headed to the brewery to grab a pour.

hot dog! way better than my experience w the sample bottle. still has a heavy roast to it and the barrel is not very in your face, but the body is super silk...but on the thin side for a BA stout, but i think it really works for this beer. nice stuff, but not quite on the level of southdown, their oatmeal stout. great first offering from a barrel for such a new brewery, but lacks the depth that you find w Firestone walker and other barrel aging masters.

On tap at the brewery, pours pitch black color with a small foamy tan head that faded very slowly and left very nice spotty foamy lacing.

Smells of dark chocolate, burnt coffee grinds, brown sugar, cocoa powder, molasses, faint piney hops, light vanilla, smoked malt and more chocolate. No oaky or barrel notes, but overall it does smell really good.

Flavor cranks up the dark fruit, toffee, and floral hops before the chocolate, brown sugar, coffee grinds and vanilla take control again. Peat moss, molasses, ash, cocoa powder, brownie batter and bourbon round out the taste. Woody notes are very timid but add to the overall complexities.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, sliding down easier than it should for such a high ABV. Mellow carbonation and a chewy feel make it feel like a barrel aged stout should. I wish it had more bourbon flavor but it's a minor gripe for how tasty this brew is on tap. Really well crafted for the first barrel aged beer by Sand City.

3/3/2017: Cracked open a bottle that aged 3 months and the head was a tad thicker and lasted longer, but perhaps that was due to my pour from the bottle - either way the looks improved as i got to watch the bubbles race up like a Guinness and form a nice tight tan foamy head. The "Look" score improved from 4 to 4.25 since this head had staying power and was much better than the glasses I had on tap at the brewery.

Aroma and flavor have more bourbon and some char to go along with the more pronounced molasses, dark chocolate, cocoa, burnt coffee grinds and finally some oaky and piney hop notes. Really smooth and even more complex than when it was first released, this aged bottle is much better than it was on tap and a lot better than the bottle I opened soon after the bottle release. This completely hides the 11% ABV in the beers dynamic flavor. When it first came out I thought it was a great effort from a new brewery but it lacked the bourbon barrel accents I've come to love in this style of stouts. With the age on this bottle I'm a lot more impressed with this brew and looking forward to a bottle aged 6 or 9 months. My "Overall" score is being raised from 4.5 to 4.75, pushing the "Rating" up to from 4.45 to 4.5.

8/3/2018: Opened my last bottle and the head seems like it improved since it was 2 fingers thick and lasted a while, fading very, very slowly and leaving nice tan foamy lacing. For a beer that aged 1 1/2 years in the bottle it improved, so I upped the "Look" score from 4.25 to 4.5. Aroma is malty with a lot of caramel, sweet malt, dark fruit, some woody notes, syrup and mild booze. It mellowed quite a bit, but still smells really nice. Flavor has more toffee, syrup and some soy sauce and minimal bourbon. Some char and oaky notes, dark chocolate, cocoa, burnt coffee grinds and dark fruit round out the smooth complexities. It hit it's peak at 3 months, and while I feel I sat on this bottle too long this is still one of my favorite beers ever made by Sand City.

On tap 12/2/16 at sand city. Pours dark with a nice head that fades slowly. Great lacing as with all sand city. Aroma of bourbon(but not overpowering), chocolate and coffee and light molasses. Taste very light bourbon, dark chocolate, ground espresso beans, light toffee finish with a light bourbon after taste. Very well made. Excellent bourbon stout easy to drink yet complex. Big fan of sand city.
