This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a decent looking hazy red color with no head nor any lacing. The smell had a rich herbal citrus to lightly spiced over caramel maltiness. The taste was slightly sweet herbal citrus over the caramel maltiness again. A mostly herbal to caramel aftertaste leading to a semi-wet finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. The carbonation seemed mostly rounded out and fairly smooth. Overall, it's a decent red ale trying to bring about a bigger hoppiness but doesn't.

I am proud to have Stoudt's B.C. here in Lancaster County, PA & I admittedly take them for granted, not drinking their beers as regularly as I used to, given the plethora of new beers coming available every day. It is a pleasure to have at least a couple as part of the eradication of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody.

From the bottle: The "V" is made up of the undersides of a group of bottle caps, each with a message as follow: "indulge", "in", "...", "festivities", "party", "debauch", "frolick [sic]", "merry making", "take pleasure". What fun!

I began my fun with the Pop! of the cap, followed by a gentle pour into an awaiting glass. An in-glass swirl raised two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, tawny head with moderate retention that left behind some decent lacing. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was very hoppy for an Amber/Red, which is what has led to the revival of what used to be a prevalent microbrewed style. Grapefruit, pine, grass and black pepper up front with an underlay of caramel and biscuit malt. Mmm. That got my mouth to begin watering. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was quite hoppy, more grapefruit and black pepper than pine and grass, with the malt providing a nice counterbalance. This was very close to an APA, IMHO, but it certainly lived up to the label's billing. I definitely prefer this iteration to the old malt-driven Ambers of thirty years ago. Finish was dry and actually fairly peppery, causing me to sneeze. Wow! I could Revel in this more often.

Check the dates, esp when buying singles, in this case at wegmans, bought a Best by 5-15-16 on 11-30-16. Six months past its prime means a lack luster brew and review. This happened twice. Both times the beer getting stale and past its prime, and a little skunky. Had to made a black and tan out of it with some Left Hand.

My first from Stoudts.

A) A+ for red cloud body that sports aggressive 3 finger, domed head that leaves rocky hills and completely laces.
S) Sour, malt, mash, with bakery and earthy trail notes.
T) More sour (past its date), almost skunked, but not unpleasant. Complex mix of bakery shop, sour dough, sour mash, decaying flowers, and earthy trail. Finishes grassy, bitter and dry. Interesting twist.
F: Massive carbonation, tickling, bitter and drying. .

O: A decent, though sour and slightly skunked, drinkable red ale, leaning toward a Belgian style.

From a bottle, thought it had a cherry taste. Probably wouldn't put it on my "must have in my frig list"
