Best by 8/28/06. Enjoyed in a pint glass at just over fridge temperature after dinner on a cool, late Summer evening.

Appearance- Pours a clear gold with orange highlights... nice two-finger head with some webby lacing down the sides of the glass.

Smell- Gargantuan aromas of honey, malts, and a quite pronounced alcohol content. Phenomenally huge nose, it's like staring at a roasted pig on a full stomach. It's not particularly balanced, and seems like a bully on the playground back in fifth grade.

Taste- Rich, sweet maltiness right in the beginning that turns awkwardly to an uber-honey botched orgy... this is a very difficult beer to sit back and enjoy. Heavy-handed and belligerant, it just doesn't have balance.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Sharp and tingly in the mouth... then subsiding slightly, the mouthfeel lumbers through its motions. Unfortunately this beer doesn't recover from the harshness of just about all of its attributes, and I am shocked at the outcome. Either this came from a bad batch or this beer is not what it was two years ago... horrifically disappointing.

Stoudts Blonde Double Mai-bock
12 oz bottle
Brewed Spring 05, drank 09/06

Poured a clear flat amber with an average rocky white mostly diminishing head with good lacing.

Smelt of moderate grain with hints of pine and grapefruit and a hint of sweat.

Taste was upfront light sweet bread and slight bitterness followed by a heavily bitter and lightly sweet and acidic grapefruit rind, with a pinch of spice, in an average length finish. Mouthfeel was light to medium, watery and heavily astringent with soft carbonation.

Overall, a beer that probably lost its roundness and taste with age.

Notes: will have to rerate a fresh batch.

Appearance: light amber

Smell: not much of anything really...some prickly sweet husky is kinda detectable

Taste: grains, sweet malt, plum, sour just doesnt add up to something good

Mouhtfeel: syrupy and flat

Drinkablility: sigh....not that drinkable when you factor in below average taste and high alcohol

This beer pours a clear golden/amber color with a tall white head.
The aroma is malty sweet with a bit of honey.
The flavor is also sweet, yet remains grainy. It contains tones of honey and a slight bitterness near the end.
Mouth feel is medium in body and moderately carbonated.

Pours a full golden with a bit of an orange highlight on the sides. A smallish white head comes and goes but leaves a little fizziness. Smell is really sweet and candy like. Lots of honey and some white chocoate cookie sweetness. A touch of grassiness comes but is drowned out. Taste is also overly sweet and syruppy. Tastes almost like I'm drinking honey. This needs more of a dry malt base. The honey and candi corn like taste is a bit overbearing. Hops, yeast, any other malts are lost in translation. Maybe some slight herbal tendacies but they really get stuck in the stickyness of it all. The bubbly carbonation helps a bit. Maybe some styles shouldn't be made doubles?

A - Golden with an amber tint and two fingers of frothy off white head that dissipates in about two minutes leaving a mostly filled ring of lace behind.

S - Grass with a touch of honey.

T - Strong light bodied malt grassy hops that finish with a potent bitterness.

M - Thick, frothy, slightly harsh and not exactly refreshing.

D - It is strong and generally mediocre with a sort of body that doesn't make you come searching for more. The foods I imagine that it would go best with would all go better with a pilsner. I don't think that I will have this again, but it would not be torture if I had to.

Look: Gold, slight haze
Smell: Low hop scent, some citrus
Taste: Slight wheat taste. Bad after taste but smooth drinking

I think this was an old bottle. I read they stopped brewing it in May. It was consumed late September. I was really hoping for more from this beer but it fell far short. I'll probably try it again but only if it's from a new batch.

On a side note, this is my first beer review.

12oz. bottle best by 7/06

Pours a clear peach color with a small white head that thins. Decent lacing on the glass.

Aroma is very malty and bready with a nice fruitiness.

Starts off nice with a sweet malt taste and rich fruitiness, but suddenly becomes very metallic and bland. The metallic taste lingers.

Full body, decent carbonation.

Geez, this beer seemed like a winner until the flavor takes a dive.

Pours a light amber with just a collar for a head. The aroma is very sulphurous, although there is some mild Vienna malt backing and a hint of berry fruits. On the palate, brisk carbonation and overpowering sulphur, along with fairly robust acidity, combine for an impression that is, overall, unpleasant. Mouthfeel is big and brash, with nothing in the way of subtlety. Things get a bit softer, but no more interesting or well executed, at higher temperatures, but overall I'd have to pass on this one next time.

Dark gold or dark blonde color with light foam head and small active prickle. Mild grain nose with slight malt hints. Clean attack and grain heavy flavor. Some vague hints of of a macrobrew yet some sour notes toward the finish. A passable yet ordinary or average microbrew. I could see some mass appeal and I can easily envision a cooler full of this being a hit at a barbecue.

A: Pours a clear golden color with a good sized head. Moderate lacing on my pilsener glass.

S: Light scent of malt and grain with a touch of hops.

T: Fairly sweet up front followed by a mild hop bitterness. Flavors of wheat and peanuts with a mild alcoholic flavor.

M: Light and crisp with moderate carbonation.

D: I'm not overly impressed with this beer. Nothing about it is bad, but nothing exemplary either. I'll pass on this again.

Poured a deep golden color with modest white puffy head. Smell is fruity, bubble gum, malt and absolutely perfect. Taste is somewhat dissapointing. Its almost as if the smell promised me something that the taste just doesn't deliver. A strange metallic taste is at the front and any sweetness to be found is overpowered by a too strong hop bitterness. Very strong alcohol presence also noted. Finishes with very strong alcohol dominating all other tastes. In all the beers that I have reviewed I don't think I have ever had such varying scores for smell the different aspects of the rating. It was difficult to finish this beer. I'm glad I only bought one.

12 oz bottle poured into a goblet - Best by 7/27/08 - Fridge Temp

Appearance: Pours a transparent golden orange and yellow color with a 1.5" off-white head. Plenty of carbonation streams to the top of the beer. Decent retention.

Smell: Wheat, pale malt, yeast. Not much aroma.

Taste: Pale malt, wheat, lemon, minimal hop flavor. Malt backing goes well with a slight nuttiness.

Mouthfeel: Slick and medium bodied with plenty of carbonation. Alcohol isn't apparent at all.

Drinkability: Awesome for a summer beer. Not complex but refreshing enough to drink multiples of.

A - Pours clear gold, with nearly no head. Small amount of visible carbonation. No lacing to speak of.
S - Smell of overripe fruit, honey, malt
T - Almost a wine flavor, with notes of apple, pear, grape. Bitterness to finish.
M - Medium body with some carbon burn toward the end.
D - I was not impressed by this brew. It seems to have an unbalanced sour/bitterness to it. Its possible I got a bad bottle or drank it past it's prime, but it's not a beer I would seek out again.

Really gold and very clear body with a small white head that turns to a patch in the center of the beer.Nice bubbles streaming to the top of the class.Corn smell and a faint hop smell Corny taste with a small hop taste and nothing else really.Mouthful is a bit syrupy but I think that is from the high abv.Quite refreshing and smooth.I like this but I was expecting a darker, more robust beer.It was solid though but nothing I would have again real fast in the future.

12 oz bottle dated best before 7/21/07 poured into Pint glass

A- Nice golden color with tons of tiny bubbles rushing towards the top. One finger head dissipates into just a coating quickly. Some lacing throughout.

S-Sweet smell, almost brown sugar like. Also strong hints of malts.

T- Hoppy start but dry, alcoholic finish. Can't seem to find that sweet smell. Almost a burning aftertaste. Seems stronger than 7%ABV. Not what I expected.

M- Thin and carbonated, very carbonated. Nice on a hot day.

D- At 7%, you could certainly drink a few. But it still seems stronger to me. Not one of my favorites from a good brewer.

Wasn't too impressed with this one. Pours out to a deep gold color with a lively head of white foam. Broken lines of lace surround the interior of the glass. Very little aroma, but notes of roasted nuts and malts were detected. Flavors of hops and malt dominates, but goes nowhere, with little depth or development in the taste dept. Mouthfeel is crisp, but borders on watery. Drinkability is decent when you consider that this is 7% ABV. I've had better.

poured from bottle into pint glass.

A- Dark straw with white head that goes away quickly.

S- Nice balance between the malt and hops with a grassy nose and a light alcohol smell.

T- The thing that gets me the most is the alcohol taste. The malt is there and a little hops; but the alcohol element wins in the end.

M- Medium and smooth with a light aftertaste.

D- A good beer from Stoudts. Another beer from them that I am sure would be worlds better fresh ontap at the brewery.

Sampled from the bottle into a goblet. Golden with loads of bubbles. Limited retention and lacing. Noble hops and bready malts for aroma.

The taste really lost me on this one. It had limited hops swirling around, even for a maibock. Though it started out as honey filled breadiness, it was quickly lost over to all grains. Mouthfeel wasn't as chewy as expected and came off as thin, little boozy warmth on the end. Finished sweet, but not with the feeling of needing future ones.

Pours a bronzed golden color with small but big-bubbled mostly white head.
Aroma has cotton-candy sweetness with some citrus and light caramel thrown in the mix.
Flavor has a very strong.almost metallic bitterness and some estery alcohol notes. These two characteristics blow away underling malt of citrusy tones underneath them.
Mouthfeel is moderate to light bodied with the alcohol pop being overdone. Aggressively bittered but way over balanced to the bitter side.
Drinkability was average do the unbalanced nature of the beer. Expected better from these folks.
