750 ml corked & caged bottle, served into a Hill Farmstead stemware glass.

A: No pop on the cork. Deep burgundy colored body with almost no head as the pour started but eventually filled up into a frothy, bubbly two finger head in the glass. Big sticky lacing on the sides of the glass.

S: Piney hops, faint citrus, darker malts, touches of floral notes too.

T: A bit sweet at first but then quickly (and nicely) balanced by some bitter, earthy hops. The profile here is certainly in the East Coast IPA realm, with plenty of malt for a solid backbone.

M: Nice and creamy, quite smooth on the palate. A bit of stickiness in the mouth.

This was a really nice showcasing of a big, hopped up East Coast Double IPA. It doesn't have that bright citrus profile my palate tends to crave but this certainly kept me interested throughout the bottle.

- bomber purchased directly from brewery. Consumed in a spiegelau ipa glass.

(3.55) A: Deep glazed caramel apple-ice tea tone with barely a recognizable head formation. Some quick to dissipate sudsy coating leaves a polished surface with no visible lacing.

(3.60) S: Nose of toasted bread and flowery citrus, pungent floral notes and herbs (do i smell columbus?). Fair strength, ibu's not as pungent on nose, as well a fairly reserved alcohol detection, some sweetly toasted caramel and alcohol, freshly squeezed citrus pine juice sneeks in late. Alcohol is warming but in a soothing manner.

(3.90) T: The flavor is very smooth, the hopping well polished and alcohol in relation to one another, used more for balance then shock purpose. Warming toasted malt syrup, flowery hop cones with a pollen like coating, warm pine, resiny grapefruit, dry and very smooth alcohol glow. Some dry apple skins and toasted bread rounds things out.

(3.85) M: Thick, syrupy, low carbonation with a nice fullness and alcohol glow on the inner cheeks that lingers softly and beautifully after the swallow for some time.

(3.90) O: if you expected the big nasty to be one big nasty hop bomb blast, you will be mistaken. This was a well balanced beer, hoppy and floral, big alcohol backing more similar to a 90/120 minute ipa where the flavor is exceptionally polished, with a warming sense of alcohol, and is soothing to sip. ABV is hard to pick up on here, drinks much smoother then it should. This is not all bitter, but a alcohol flavored hop experience that you enjoy the more you drink and realize what it is, a beautifully brewed beer.

Undated bomber at 40 degrees into snifter
Aroma of pine
Head small (<2 cm), off white, fizzy, rapidly diminishing to 2 mm ring and partial layer
Lacing poor – very narrow partial rings and narrow stalactites of tiny bubbles
Body dark orange, cloudy
Flavor of pine, but weak, slightly sweet and the malt comes through
Palate medium, slightly oily, soft carbonation

Appearance 3, Aroma 2.75, Flavor 2.75, Palate 3, Overall 2.875. Final weighted average: 2.8125.
The appearance is somewhat reminiscent of cider: dark, cloudy, and lots of floaters. Since this is an undated bottle of 160+ IBU beer and exhibits no more hop presence than an APA, I suspect that it is old – for what it’s worth, it was in the reefer at Stoudts. In fact, it’s somewhat like an old Devil Dancer but less sweet. Not bad but I’d like to try a fresh one.

Appearance was a striking copper color with slightly over a finger of head that dissipated rather quickly. The nose had notes of pine and hops. There is a solid malt profile to this offering and it is followed by a relatively potent dose of hops bitterness on the finish.

This is a DIPA in the style of DFH 90, but it is just not in the same league. It is solid, but unremarkable.

I love IPAs and have tried two for Stoudts. The hoppier the better as far as I am concerned. I am definitely not a professional when it comes to these things but I know what I like.

The Big Nasty is one of the best IPAs I have ever had. But be careful before you order the third glass! I liked the taste so much that I did not keep track of the amount of alcohol intake....

Overall, I loved it!
