Notes / Commercial Description:
An oatmeal stout brewed with English roasted barley and caramunich malt to impart a roasty and slightly sweet malt flavor. The addition of flaked oats lends creaminess and body. The Heine Brothers' specially roasted, organic, Mexican coffee is added in two doses; a ration is stirred into the hot unfermented beer to extract coffee flavor, then freshly brewed coffee is also added after fermentation is complete, to impart fresh coffee flavor and aroma.

Served in a St. Bernardus chalice at Local Option.

Going from one coffee stout down the street to another here. It pours a straight obsidian topped by a finger of dark tan foam. The nose comprises coffee, milk chocolate, and roasted malts. Unlike before the coffee is still the primary scent, but it compliments and draws out the others. Just like a leader ought. The taste brings in more of the same, along with some light vanilla bean and some light molasses in the background. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a kinda thin feel. Overall, a very nice coffee stout, one that doesn't overdo it on the coffee and whose somewhat thin feel is really the only thing holding it back.

Pours one shade from black with a half-finger tan head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of robust roasted coffee, solid roasted malts, and unsweetened chocolate.

Tastes similar to how it smells however the coffee isn't as well fleshed out. Strong roasted malt flavors kick things off and are quickly joined by heavily roasted coffee flavors with hints of char. Midway through the sip unsweetened chocolate flavors enter into things and carry through to a solidly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall this was a good coffee stout however the flavors weren't quite as smooth as I'd hoped given the smell. Still, worth a shot.

Served overly-chilly, and pretty well pitch black in the BBC pint glass, with no foam or lace.

Nose is chocolate, with some coffee grounds in the background. Appealing.

Nice and smooth oatmeal stout, with heavy chocolate tones alongside the coffee flavors, and a definite nutty hint as well. Integration among flavors well done.

A superb drink, and seemingly (from the other scores) much better on draft than bottled.

Enjoyed on tap at BBC St. Matthews, before the Slint "Breadcrumb Trail" film premiere in town.

Pint poured a deep black. Limited tan head, with little discernible lacing on the glass.

Smells like cold coffee, pure and simple. Which is certainly not a bad thing! It must be noted, too, that this was served at a proper temperature (almost room temp). Perfect!

Tastes like smooth, sweet coffee. Little hint of burnt or even roasty malts. Absolutely delicious and delightful. For coffee lovers, this is a real treat.

It's really the perfect looking beer. It's midnight dark, with a thick head of brown bubbles.

Smells remarkable. There's a hint of flowers, but it's all coffee. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I love it in beer. This is what I want a beer to smell like.

Tastes great. You gets hints of coffee, but it's not overpowering, with just enough toffee to offset and balance the coffee.

Very creamy in the mouth. Like I said, I'm not a coffee drinker, but this is what I envision a mocha coffee drink to feel like. There's some substance with the coffee, but a little sweetness to counter the only slightly bitter taste.

This is so easy to drink. It smells and tastes great. It feels good in your mouth and goes down easy. It's somewhat above average in ABV, but almost the perfect beer.

Presentation: Poured from a foil wrapped wine bottle into an Imperial pint glass. Label is very simple, no picture, just the name of the beer. Picked this up at the Louisville brewpub.

Appearance: Pours with 2 fingers of medium tan head. This settles slowly, still maintaining a thin, yet complete coating of foam. Nice lacing coverage. The beer itself is dark brown and opaque, with just hints of light coming through the edges. No sediment in the bottle.

Smell: Creamy oatmeal smoothness with hints of a lactose sweetness. Mild coffee aroma.

Taste: Creamy flavors upfront, lactose and oatmeal. Middle of medium roastiness and a mild coffee bitterness. Dry acrid finish.

Mouthfeel: Average to slightly lower than average carbonation level. Body is decent. Not watery, but not mouth-coating.

Drinkability: I like this one. Nothing over the top or spectacular, but this is another solid offering from BBC. This could be an everyday, go to beer.

Purchased a growler of this brew from Liquor Barn, Louisville, KY (Springhurst location). Served in a pint glass, the beer pours black with a small brown head. Head retention is low, lacing is decent. The aroma is very nice, you can definitely tell this is a coffee stout! Other than coffee, I can also smell roasted malt and a smoky/burnt aroma. The taste is the same as the aroma, coffee, roasted malt and a burnt/smoky flavor. Mouthfeel/body is medium, seems a bit thin for a stout, but it is very smooth. It's also quite enjoyable and easy to drink. All in all I have to say this is a good brew, I'll definitely have to pick some more up on my next trip to Louisville. If you like coffee stouts, then you should like this beer.

750 ml bottle. Pitch black color. An frothy head disappears a bit too quickly. A few spots of lace.

Nice aroma of fresh brewed, strong coffee. Coffee boarders on an espresso roast in the nose. Roasty malt as well. Just a hint of a sweet note.

Roasted malt, dark roast coffee with a bitter edge. A note of dark chocolate. Minimal fruity notes.

Body seems a bit thin. If this has oatmeal, it lacks that smooth, slick feel. Alcohol is well hidden. Not outstanding, but still nice.

Brewed with Heine Brothers coffee grown in Chiapas, Mexico, I understand that coffee is added to the hot wort and brewed coffee is also added after fermentation. Bright, clean, clear coffee flavor dominates, but is well integrated into the sweetish malt. No acidity or oilyness - very smooth and drinkable. Not a coffee stout with "coffee notes" - the coffee here is the main attraction, but well managed - one of the best examples I've come across.

Poured into a snifter.

3.0 A: First pour yielded about half head. Fortunately the head fell quickly and the second pour filled my glass. Black color. Fizzy soda-pop head, which falls quickly and leaves no lacing behind.

3.5 S: Exceedingly dry with surprisingly low amounts of coffee. The roastiness and oatmeal comes through well along with chocolate. I like it. I would have given a higher score if it wasn't slightly acrid.

1.5 T: Oh boy, I see where the acrid part of the nose comes from. Exceedingly acrid day old stale coffee taste dominates giving a this beer a puckering aspect. This flavor is so strong that anything outside of general roastiness cannot be perceived.

2.0 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Despite constant swirling, I couldn't get the carbonation down to a reasonable level. Not particularly creamy and certainly not smooth.

1.5 D: I don't know why I gave this brewery another chance after being disappointed time and again by their products. Unfortunately, I bought two other BBC brews when I bought this. Hopefully they will be better. Avoid this at all costs.

Pours a deep nearly black color with dark brown edges. A full burnt tan head rises on top, but settles a bit thin, leaving a swirly galaxy of froth on top and a nice collar. Little lace. In thinking coffee, it actually looks really really good.

Smells like a coffee stout, but a little Christmasy too. Roasted malts, mild light coffee, marshmallow, and burnt wood, cedar, and spice.

Taste has some round roasted malt, full and dry, with a mildly bitter coffee filling in through it. Coffee is strong, but not too much so. Some chocolate. Other flavors accompany that are typical of such a beer, including a slight vegetable taste and a distant woodiness. Leaves a resounding floral background in the coffee aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is interesting. Very oily, thick, and smooth, almost creamy. It's perhaps even thicker than I'd really like.

Drinkability is hindered by body, but not too badly. Drinks smooth and easy, but a little full. Taste is nice, as is smell, but neither stand out to me as being outstanding beyond some of the other well done examples of the style. I like this beer, especially as a coffee beer, but I don't know that I'll find myself craving it like some others. I do like that it's rather palatable without overdone alcohol.

Split a 750mL bottle with a good friend. Poured into a tall pint glass.

A: Looks like I'm pouring pitch black coffee into my glass; forms a deep khaki-colored head which quickly fades to a thin layer of lacing on top of the body. When pouring this beer, I got some unique ruby colored highlights in the head, but I'm wondering if it was just the lighting playing tricks on my eyes. Nonetheless, a deep, dark oatmeal stout - could easily pass for a RIS with its depth of color.

S: Fresh roasted coffee the whole way - probably a mild blend from Heine Brothers. There are also faint notes of dark baking chocolate in the background.

T: Much like the nose, smooth, roasted Heine Bros. coffee, definitely an easy drinking morning blend was used for this stout. The coffee flavor pervades through each sip before giving away to a fleeting tinge of hop bitterness. Then the flavors quickly transition into a very pronounced, dark, semi-sweet chocolate. That flavor lingers well into the aftertaste where it mingles with a slightly smoky note. Flavors are smooth and blend into one another so well. Maybe not as complex of a "coffee stout" as a Founder's Breakfast Stout, but delicious nonetheless, and its is a limited local brew! Big ups to BBC there!

M: Smooth, even if the body isn't as thick as I would expect or prefer. Still, this stout goes down easy as the low carbonation creates a slightly syrupy, velvety mouthfeel.

D: Drinkability is good. In fact, its relatively easy to polish off a 750mL bottle because the alcohol is completely hidden. I actually drank part of my friend's glass because I liked it so much... probably bad etiquette on my part, but this beer was quite smooth to drink. And it was LOCAL!

Wow. Impressed with Bluegrass Brewing Company's effort. Definitely a worthy oatmeal/coffee stout. If you can find it, grab a bottle before it is gone. Can't wait to try this on tap at BBC's Shelbyville Road brewpub. I recommend this beer for anyone who enjoys quality oatmeal stouts.

A- Pours a deep brown almost black color with a thin mocha colored head. Not much lace left behind.

S- The nose is mostly roasted malt and a faint coffee scent. Overall the nose is fairly weak.

T- Ok, now we're talking...the nose might have been a bit disappointing but the flavors certainly aren't. Nice full roasted flavor with some bitterness from the coffee beans and dark chocolate. The oats lend a bit of malt sweetness and body. The coffee is much more pronounced in the flavor and it finishes with a touch of alcohol warmth.

M- Medium bodied with a smooth feel.

D- Very drinkable brew that could really benefit from a stronger nose.

Appearance - starts with a dark, opaque pour into the glass. A slightly watery finger of mocha. Light lacing as it melts down to a creamy cover. Halfway through, the lace and head have disappeared.

Aroma - roasty malt, undercut a little by the snappy, spicy coffee beans. They are intense, almost pepper-like.

Taste - lots of roasty malt, a touch of char. The coffee is a bit too much on the swallow at first, coming across with that pepperiness. The swallow shows a much better profile of the beans as a good roasted coffee flavor slowly emerges. The finish is tasty with the coffee still lingering and the roast malt helping out. Some good dark chocolate notes come out with warming, very nice.

Mouthfeel - medium body, but feels a bit thin for the style. Average carbonation.

Drinkability - a drinkable coffee brew; the early pepper detracts a little, but overall I like it.

My friend gave me this bottle around May, so this bottle has aged a little.

A- An opaque motor oil black with just the faintest ruby highlights towards the bottom of the glass when exposed to light. A small brown head composed of fine bubbles disappears into a slightly splotchy blanket across the surface of the glass. Slight lacing is apparent as a defining circle outlines the glass wall.

S- Burnt roasted malts that are reminiscent of roasted coffee and dark bitter chocolate. Beneath the large roasty smell are hints of nuts and a bready character. The finish of the smells melds together with the chocolate undertones, but more complex character derived from a slight bitterness from hops and a lasting alcohol noticeability.

T- The taste does not parallel the smell in strength. The roasty complexion that was expected was very subdued with hints of coffee and chocolate that miss any real complex character. There is a bready and nutty character towards the beer and it almost rivals the intensity of the roasted and chocolate malt. Towards the end the bitterness provides more complexity than the malt with a slight alcohol taste, but leaves the feeling that all the tastes are a bit watered down.

M- Medium bodied mouthfeel that lacks a chewy or silky feeling that should be accompanied with oats. Slightly watery and lacking any real carbonation.

D- Surprised at this beer as I have heard good things about the brewery. This could be a result of an older (maybe slightly oxidized) bottle rather than a bad product. At this point not very drinkable. I'll chalk this one up to an isolated incident for now and hopefully will be able to try this one again later.

A- Creamy head, very low retention. Moderate lacing. Low carbonation. Inky darkness with very little in terms of other hues to offer.

S- Roasted grain, minor burnt character, something plasticy to the roast. Generic almost. Some bitter coffee character, but faint.

T- Opens sweet, chocolatey. Very milk chocolately in fact. Surprisingly good. Middle is the roasted grain. Finish is moderately clean after having a burst of bitter coffee. Not much else in terms of coffee flavor. Deeply disappointing in terms of coffee, deeply impressive in terms of milk chocolate flavors. It actually tastes a bit like chocolate milk. Some lactose sugars coming out interestingly enough.

M- Nice and creamy. Smooth nature. Thin, low lingering potential. Crisp on the opening that gives off enough carbonation, regardless of how hidden it is on the appearance.

D- Overall, decent. The first time I had this I was amazed by it. It truly blew me away at DLD. This however is a disappointment to my memory. Perhaps if I didn't put it up on a pedestal I'd enjoy it more.

Bluegrass Brewing has become much of a surprise lately with the newer and fresher taste of their beers along with the wider distribution for beers like these.

Heine Brothers has all of the qualities of a very well crafted Stout and then with infused coffee goodness. The base beer seems to resemble a classic American Stout more than an Oatmeal because of the pronounced hop flavor and bitterness and because of the low-lying body and silkiness from slight oatmeal additions.

The coffee addition has its signature all over this beer. From nose to finish, this beer is all about the coffee. Steering slightly away from espresso, a nutty Columbian style coffee gives hints of caramel, toasty, and mild oily bitter resins. These compliment the hops, bitter cocoa, and roasted grains of the Stout very well.

The key is in the balance, it's hard to tell if the Stout or the coffee takes precidence- varying in each sip. Clean, crisp, and basically error free, the beer is a supurb example of the style.

As the coffee notes are boldly noticed upfront, there seems to be a lull before the Stout qualities come in at mid-palate. This provides a long linger in the middle but with little evolution (not empiness, I just wanted a bit more transition and complexity here.) I'm probably being way to picky here.

Drink this one early in the session, lest pull an all-nighter against your will. There's a large caffeen kick in here.

Thanks again to Megan for bringing this one the other night. You almost have me craving these coffee beers at this point. This one was packaged in a capped 750, with gold foil wrapped on the cap. Very impressive look. As for the beer, it poured a nice dark brown color, with some cappuchino colored foam on top. Big aromas of freshly brewed coffee, roasted malt and dark chocolate. Somewhat full bodied and sweet, creamy and rich. Coffee is the dominant flavor here, but chocolate is still present. Overall, a very nice example of the style.
