Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.66%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Each Halloween we release this special concoction to celebrate one of our favorite holidays. Deep blood-red in color, an intense aroma of pine and citrus from an abundance of American hops balances the sweetness and rich, bready flavors of this beer's caramel malts. The result is a fiendishly smooth brew that will make your taste buds scream with delight.

This beer pairs excellently with toffee, caramel apples, or your favorite horror flick.

Undated bottle into pint glass. Pours a hazy amber-brown with a persistent light tan head. Initial impression is citrus rind, dank earth, pine, and dark fruits, balanced somewhat by bready and caramel malts. Mouthfeel is medium, as is carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden. (Interesting that they claim 6.66% - clever.) Finish is tart, but with enough lingering hops to remind you that you're drinking a hopped amber ale. Very flavorful, but not one of my favorites - in my opinion, there is almost too much going on flavor-wise. The hops and malts are in competition, rather than complementing one another.

Pours a beautiful reddish brown with thick head and lacing. The nose is very light, malt, hops, citrus. The taste is more complex than the nose, very nice malty bread goodness with a hoppy citrus mix, very smooth and easy drinking. The finish is a little dry with a bread feel and mild hops. I really enjoyed this beer, was a nice mix of flavors and beautiful to look at.

Poured from 22oz into Standard Pint glass. No date.

L: Slight hop haze to a dark mahogany color, two fingers of light beige head. Great retention.

S: Aroma is nice and hoppy, citrusy and piney. Bready malts are the backbone here.

T: Hoppy for a Red, good malty breadiness though, citrusy and piney.

F: Medium body, below average carbonation and a clean hoppy finish.

O: A pretty tasty beer but I was expecting a bit more from AleSmith whom I hold in high regard.

22 ounce bottle poured into a tulip

A: Pours a deep rich mahogany red color with an off-white full creamy head, lots of lacing, decent retention.

A: Lots of citrus peel aroma like grapefruit, pine needles, lots of bready malts, light toasted malt, alcohol is well hidden.

T: Light flavors of grapefruit peel and pine, moderate amount of bitterness, big hit of toasted caramel malt, bready malts, finish has lingering notes of grapefruit and pine with a touch of toasted caramel.

M: Medium bodied with a dry finish and a good amount of carbonation.

O: A very nice American Amber/Red ale, good balance of pine and citrus hop notes along with a strong presence of malts, smooth and easy to drink.

Finger plus deep head, decent density with a few puddles of larger bubbles, dark tan in hue, retention is above average, dimples as it dissolves, the lacing more splotches than extended streaks. The liquid is a somewhat filmy orange-brown color, touch more reddish from a distance, few visible bubbles, those more spread out than in beads. Were it not for the toastiness to it the nose would come off like German chocolate cake, lots of cocoa and caramel and molasses with a hint of coconut, does have its herbaceous side as well and a good amount of pine, low level of fruit scents, mainly pineapple to papaya. Medium-bodied, fluffy and heavily carbonated mouth entry, this recedes quickly enough. More balance between the leafy hops and the bread, caramel, honey to cola bean elements, the bitterness helps reduce the overall sweetness. That said, does finish on the short side as it dries out prematurely, roast and bitter oiliness left behind. As in the nose there’s not a strong fruit presence, pineapple, green apple, apricot pit. Not a bad beer by any stretch yet it lacks “fun factor” and does not seem to excel at any one thing.

Beautiful color on this beer, a little hopped up for a amber ale more like a red IPA which is prefect for me. Alesmith always comes through with tasty IPA's

Appearance: dark amber with a 1/2" head that slowly falls to a surface covering.

Smell: malty goodness and some pine are what the nose detects.

Taste: big malt profile, bread, grapefruit, red grapes, pine, and some earthy bitterness rounds it out.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. Crisp to start, less crisp and dry at the finish. Long lasting aftertaste.

Overall: this is a big and bold red ale that highly hopped. Totally satisfying.

Probably my favorite red ale.
Look: not very red. Mostly brown with a purplish red tint. Beige 1.5 inch head
Smell: Not very strong. bit of citrus, pine, and honeycrisp apple, caramel malt
Taste: I get tons of apple notes with citrus and pine and perhaps some caramel sweetness. Like biting into a caramel apple in a pine forest. I love it. Very refreshing and tasty
Feel: crisp and light for the style. Medium bodied and not burdened by sweetness.
Overall: my favorite red ale. Not a style that I drink very often, but this one is superb.

From the 22 oz bomber in a snifter via a friend from work---Thanks Randy!

The "GROOVY" brew pours a beautiful mahogany red with a very nice head
of off white foam that settles to a thick ring, thin layer, and features some
VERY nice lacing. Nose of pine, grapefruit, and citrus laden hops with a malty
toffee sweetness. Flavors exceed the nose with toffee and breaded malts
awash in "GROOVY" citrus notes of orange, pineapple, and grapefruit hops
with a nice sprig of spruce that is not overpowering of the citrus flavors and
lightly enhances them in fact. Very nice mouth feel with a resinous hop finish
mingling nicely with sweetness and medium carbonation making for a very easy
to drink red ale. Overall Ash would be proud. Deadites not withstanding

Where's my book of the dead----Klatoo, Verata, Nectphhhh......
awww...whatever, it's a solid brew.

Groovy...er...ahhh....cheers.
