Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.66%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Each Halloween we release this special concoction to celebrate one of our favorite holidays. Deep blood-red in color, an intense aroma of pine and citrus from an abundance of American hops balances the sweetness and rich, bready flavors of this beer's caramel malts. The result is a fiendishly smooth brew that will make your taste buds scream with delight.

This beer pairs excellently with toffee, caramel apples, or your favorite horror flick.

DATE: January 14, 2018... OCCASION: coming down after a thrillingly improbable finish to the Vikings/Saints game... GLASSWARE: Hop Devil nonick... pours a dark ruby red body, murky and foreboding--too dense to see through... the thick, creamy off-white head sits like a velvet cake frosting, and it laces like a stormy sky, and plateaus as a two-finger mesa--attractive! Immediate resin, spruce, and earthy malts leave the best impression; secondary scents of toasted malts that suggest soon-to-be-born bread, a little yeast funk, and some vegetable... traces of citric aroma, but not as much as expected... a creamy, frothy, breathy ale that is smooth, soft and extremely drinkable--nothing dead here, though a bit of butter accompanies the finish... a lingering, pleasant experience.... the flavor is resin, mango, peach, and light pine... the caramel promised is secondary, with the sweetness blunted by vegetable and toasted bread malts... I like the overall experience, with its creamy comfortably encouraging the next sip, and each sip lacking a bite at a middle-of-the-road ABV... ultimately, a beer that probably pairs with Autumn well; here in January, it stands well but not out--other ambers have been maltier, sweeter, hoppier.... this does enough to be in the second tier of that conversation...

The beer pours a nice ruby red color with a nice head and lacing. Aroma has hints of pine, citrus and malts. The taste follows the nose with subtle reminders of pine, citrus and malts. A nice medium bodied smooth beer.

Poured into a Duvel glass.

The beer is a dark reddish-brown color and completely opaque. A frothy, tan seasudsy head sits on top and breaks down into large foamy patches while thick blankets of foam lacing stick to the glass.

Aromas of red wood, cedar, pine dominate with a spicy hop note not unlike white pepper.

The taste is just as woody as the aroma with added flavors of charred dark bread and more prominent tangy hops in the finish. The finish is very sharp with subtle notes of lime citrus.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and very dry, sharp.

Overall, a bit too much wood and nothing to really balance it out, a soft caramel note would help.

Had on draft at PC Pub in Pennsburg, PA. The color is super dark mahogany that you can barely see through. Very rich, chewy malt flavors with a west coast hoppy backbone. Medium bodied with well-suited carbonation. Tastes and smells kinda like Christmas.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a high sided stem glass.

Look is a deep red ruby with a thick reddish brown head.

Aroma is roasty and astringent with a caramel malt note at the end.

Taste is bitter but more from roasted malt than hops it seems. Underlying malt is sweet like molasses and a smooth balance to the bitterness.

Undated bottle into pint glass. Pours a hazy amber-brown with a persistent light tan head. Initial impression is citrus rind, dank earth, pine, and dark fruits, balanced somewhat by bready and caramel malts. Mouthfeel is medium, as is carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden. (Interesting that they claim 6.66% - clever.) Finish is tart, but with enough lingering hops to remind you that you're drinking a hopped amber ale. Very flavorful, but not one of my favorites - in my opinion, there is almost too much going on flavor-wise. The hops and malts are in competition, rather than complementing one another.

Pours a beautiful reddish brown with thick head and lacing. The nose is very light, malt, hops, citrus. The taste is more complex than the nose, very nice malty bread goodness with a hoppy citrus mix, very smooth and easy drinking. The finish is a little dry with a bread feel and mild hops. I really enjoyed this beer, was a nice mix of flavors and beautiful to look at.

Poured from 22oz into Standard Pint glass. No date.

L: Slight hop haze to a dark mahogany color, two fingers of light beige head. Great retention.

S: Aroma is nice and hoppy, citrusy and piney. Bready malts are the backbone here.

T: Hoppy for a Red, good malty breadiness though, citrusy and piney.

F: Medium body, below average carbonation and a clean hoppy finish.

O: A pretty tasty beer but I was expecting a bit more from AleSmith whom I hold in high regard.

22 ounce bottle poured into a tulip

A: Pours a deep rich mahogany red color with an off-white full creamy head, lots of lacing, decent retention.

A: Lots of citrus peel aroma like grapefruit, pine needles, lots of bready malts, light toasted malt, alcohol is well hidden.

T: Light flavors of grapefruit peel and pine, moderate amount of bitterness, big hit of toasted caramel malt, bready malts, finish has lingering notes of grapefruit and pine with a touch of toasted caramel.

M: Medium bodied with a dry finish and a good amount of carbonation.

O: A very nice American Amber/Red ale, good balance of pine and citrus hop notes along with a strong presence of malts, smooth and easy to drink.
