Notes / Commercial Description:
In early 2014, Tony Gwynn’s team approached AleSmith to create a distinctive beer for the baseball legend. A meeting was called at the Gwynn household, which included a sampling of AleSmith beers to identify Tony’s preferences. He wanted the beer to be “light with a kick” which he elaborated further to mean full of hop character and light in body and color. The result of the Gwynn family’s feedback on test batches rendered a golden pale ale full of American hop flavor and aroma, with a subdued bitterness and a malty sweet finish. AleSmith San Diego Pale Ale .394 pays tribute to the city that Tony loved and the career high batting average that he achieved in ‘94. Discover what happens when a Hall of Fame perfectionist crafts a beer with a world-class brewery. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation (TAG).

On tap at Mohawk Bend in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and grapefruit juice flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is quite tasty and super easy to drink.

Serving type: on tap.

Poured out as a clear looking yellowish gold color with a soapy white head on top. The smell of the beer is very inviting with a big hoppy aroma. The taste of the beer is well balanced with the light malt bill and some nice hop flavors. The feel is light bodied and refreshing. Overall it's a good brew.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 5/17/2016. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, papaya, passion fruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light caramel, biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Incredible aromas with awesome balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, papaya, passion fruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light caramel, biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, papaya, passion fruit, lemon/orange rind, pine, biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky/resinous, and lightly creamy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6%. Overall this is an incredible American pale ale! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Poured out a clear, golden yellow color with a one-finger white head of foam. It smelled of caramel, pine and citrus. It tasted citrusy with orange and grapefruit. A nice caramel toastiness.

Appearance: Puts on a nice bubble show and foams up to two fingers on top of the clear amber liquid; a few shards of lacing linger

Smell: Rich in sugary tropical fruits (mango and pineapple) and grapefruit; a touch of caramel adds additional sweet tones

Taste: A touch of caramel, some grapefruit and then a full blast of mango and pineapple; some bitterness builds, after the swallow, and the finish has a distinct sulfur aspect though the caramel malt hangs around as well

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Overall, the sweetness gets to me somewhat and I didn't care for the sulfur in the finish; nits, I realize, but there are lots of good APAs out there

Thanks, mabermud, for the opportunity

A: Pours a crystal clear medium golden honey orange in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and moderate copper + golden yellow highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense sudsy foamy light tan head that reduces to a large patch of thin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Slightly heavier than moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of citrus/grapefruit and citrus/grapefruit zest hops over the top of light aromas of grainy malts with a light amount of sweetness. Hints of tropical/mango and tropical/papaya aromas.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of grainy malts with a light to moderate amount of caramel + grainy sweetness. That is followed by slightly heavier than moderate flavors of citrus/grapefruit and citrus/grapefruit zest hops with light to moderate flavors of tropical/mango and tropical/papaya hops. The hops contribute a slightly heavier than light amount of bitterness which does not linger for too long.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Initially crisp with just the slightest hint of dryness in the finish.

O: Easy to drink and refreshing with a nice hop profile (aroma and flavor). Enjoyable. Definitely one that I would grab again and it seems appropriate for one of the last days of the baseball season.

Can. Off white head. Lace. Golden orange color. Canned 02/17/17. Was told this was fresh, but it appears not.

Taste still has some juicy hops as I remembered it on tap. It has a caramel and bready malt backbone, however. Hoppy, floral, earthy. Solid beer even with a bit of age.

Slightly hazy golden colour with off- white head. Aroma has sweet notes like candied orange and resiny hop notes. Taste is hoppy but not too bitter, resiny with candied citrus notes. Medium body and carbonation. Quite decent pale ale. Old school but tasty and well made.

AleSmith Brewing Company ".394 San Diego Pale Ale"
12 fl. oz. can, "CANNED 04/13/18" and sampled on 06/05/18
$2.49 @ Whole Foods, South Street, Philadelphia, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Well this is a nice looking glass of beer! It's a slightly hazy amber beneath a frothy head of off-white. The head retention appears to be quite good, and it's already left some nice lacing where the head has dropped. There's citrus and pungent resin in the aroma. It's not bold but it's clear enough. Some malt slips through as well. Very nice. Hmmmm, as might be expected the flavor is almost exactly the same. There's more malt to it, lightly caramelish and biscuity, and it blends really well with the delicately citrusy and softly resinous notes. A firm bitterness runs through it and it finishes dry with some residual bitterness and just a kiss of everything that came before. Wow, that's a really delicious, superbly balanced American pale ale. Looking back, I just noticed that I still have a solid surface covering of foam. The lacing didn't turn out quite as nicely as I thought it would be, but it's still OK. Final item, mouthfeel: medium bodied and crisp-then-smooth. Overall just superb. It delivers on every front without being overdone at all. Well worth seeking out.
