Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
In early 2014, Tony Gwynn’s team approached AleSmith to create a distinctive beer for the baseball legend. A meeting was called at the Gwynn household, which included a sampling of AleSmith beers to identify Tony’s preferences. He wanted the beer to be “light with a kick” which he elaborated further to mean full of hop character and light in body and color. The result of the Gwynn family’s feedback on test batches rendered a golden pale ale full of American hop flavor and aroma, with a subdued bitterness and a malty sweet finish. AleSmith San Diego Pale Ale .394 pays tribute to the city that Tony loved and the career high batting average that he achieved in ‘94. Discover what happens when a Hall of Fame perfectionist crafts a beer with a world-class brewery. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation (TAG).

Can dated 02/02/18 into a tulip glass.

L: Pours bright copper with 1+ finger of variable density white head with moderate retention and left mixed lacing.

S: Vibrant citrus forward nose with tropical undertones. Orange, grapefruit, nectarine, pineapple, and mango. Perhaps some subtle floral aspects as it warms.

T: Follows the nose well, bright and refreshing, but slightly less dynamic than the nose. Finishes with mild bitterness and limited astringency, clears palate quickly.

F: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, light on the tongue, slick on the finish.

O: One of my favorite APAs, and when fresh the flavors pop more than the can I'm reviewing. It's a must grab every time I find it fresh, and a tremendous Alesmith offering, highly recommend!

12oz can poured into a snifter.

A: Amber/orange color with some mild haze. Creamy off-white head retains well and leaves behind plenty of sticky webbing.

S: Mandarin orange, lemon rind, perhaps even a hint of pineapple. Soft pine. Sturdy malt aromas of caramel, toffee, and toast.

T: Follows the nose. Mandarin orange and tropical notes of pineapple a lemon rind kick things off. S ride of malt flavor doo backs it with plenty of toast, caramel, and toffee. Hops go earthy middle to end, with flavors of faint bark, pine, and resin. Bitterness is very tame. Earthy finish with lingering citrus.

M: Medium body with some chewy, nearly slick malt texture and mild scraping astringency. Seltzery carbonation soon blasts it off of the tongue and creates deep crispness.

O: A fantastic West-coast style pale ale. This is one of my favorite beers to drink when visiting San Diego. Well balanced and very moreish. Perfectly suited to the warm, dry climate too.

Rat a tat tat Tony Gwynn is up to bat! And just like said legend, this one delivers. And I’m not talkin’ about just pokin’ it the other way, I’m talkin’ big boi Tony swinging for the fences and hitting it out of the park! Hella tropical fruit with just a solid, meaty malt backbone.

This one is good!

Unfortunately this tastes more like an IPA than an APA.

Canned on 1/19/18. 12oz can poured into a tulip. Pours golden with a mild haze but still has nice clarity to it; big fluffy white head that falls leaving nice retention and nice lacing. The aromas have citrus along with some subtle floral notes. Sweet orange and grapefruit along with some cream. Malts are there. The flavors basically follow the nose. More citrus leading the way. More orange and grapefruit. Hints of fresh grass and pine. Mild hints of bread and crackers. Moderate bitterness. Malts do their thing. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is on the fuller side of light-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's very fluffy, smooth and easy to drink.

This is a really nice "pale ale". Nice hoppy aromas and flavors. It might have some IPA characteristics and less traditional pale ale characteristics, but it's good stuff however you look at it.

Picked up a single from the Craft Beer Hop Stop 11-11-17 for $2.33. Canned on 10-16-17, cold stored throughout.

Beer poured orange with a very nice white head that is leaving lacing behind.

Nose is light citrus, very pleasant.

Taste is very well balanced between fresh citrus over a lighter malt body. Finish is a light touch of pith.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and refreshing.

Overall a solid pale ale that i would have again!

Appearance - Pours mostly clear and pure golden in color with an off-white, near finger width head. Fair retention results in a thin, broken layer of surface suds. Strong lacing, with broken webbing, lines and some spotting.

Smell - Bright, citrusy aroma with slight tropical character and some toasted malts.

Taste - Follows the nose. Orange, tangerine, passionfruit and light grapefruit with a fair amount of lightly toasted bread. Finishes much the same, with faint orange pith lingering in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Light-bodied with moderate carbonation. Wonderfully drinkable: smooth, velvety mouthfeel before a crisp, slightly dry finish.

Overall - Really tasty, stupid drinkable pale. Very cohesive flavor profile. This is what well crafted is all about. Hats off, AleSmith.

Pours a filtered orange-amber color.

Aroma is of grapefruit, pine, and citrus. Really classic west coast aromas.

Taste is solid. Not overly bitter or aggressive; a true pale ale. Balanced with the aroma following the nose. Bitter grapefruit, orange rind, and pine.

Overall, a easily sessionable beer. I see why it’s a popular beer for the sunny SD area. It paired well with a BLT and BBQ beans. It gets a 84.8/100.
