Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Commemorating our 20th Anniversary and the creation of our new brewery, we pay homage to the ol' days by introducing our first ever barrel-aged blend. Reforged 20th Anniversary Ale is a triple-barrel fusion of our three original high-gravity beers: Wee Heavy (Scotch Ale), Speedway Stout (Imperial Stout w/coffee), and Old Numbskull (Barley wine). A proprietary blend was carefully established by AleSmith's elite Sensory Team of BJCP Beer Judges and Brew Team members. The result: A 100% barrel-aged brew which balances the oaky, rich flavors of bourbon with Wee Heavy's vanilla notes, Speedway's chocolatey coffee layers, and Old Numbskull's caramel undertones. Share and celebrate this exclusive specialty with friends and family now or age at a cool temperature to enhance the beer's numerous complexities. Cheers to twenty years!

Thanks, Chris!

To say I was looking forward to this one was an understatement. Not that I particularly thought each of the base beers were spectacular (my ratings were below with each - Wee Heavy (3.98) Speedway Stout (4.30) and Old Numbskull (3.80) - but blend those three in barrels? Oh yeah. As pathetic as it was, Reforged was my oldest aged beer at roughly 9-to-10 months That might be perfect for my aging situation though (a cabinet), maybe more like 12-to-13 months? Who knows? Let’s review this already.

Poured a pitch black color with two fingers of frothy, bubbly, tan head. Good, foamy retention. Excellent retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled smooth bourbon up front, followed by vanilla, toffee, caramel, leathery, tobacco, oak, milk chocolate, dark candied shell and crayon. Got boozier as the smell went down, which is fairy unusual I think. For American Strong Ale, great on the nose. (Smell - 4.50)

Taste followed somewhat. Got leathery tobacco and raisins first, followed by a boozy warmth that seemed to go down from my throat to my stomach in no time. Also smooth bourbon, vanilla, caramel, toffee, oak, dark chocolate, some black coffee, milk chocolate, chocolate syrup, crayon and a touch of smoked cocoa nibs. In order, probably got Wee Heavy, Old Numbskull and then Speedway Stout. (Taste - 4.25)

Full-to-medium body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, warming finish. Just a touch hot. Probably could have used another three months or so. (Feel - 4.25)

This got much better as it warmed and I’m glad I waited until I poured a few glasses. Lovely. (Overall - 4.25)

Bottle shared by Barry the other night, thanks dude.

This one pours a pretty dark brown, with a very small head, and essentially no lacing.

This smells just wonderful, big barrel complexities just leap out of the glass. Caramel, toffee, vanilla, chocolate, bourbon, mild smoke, and oak, just wonderful.

No one beer from the blend seems to jump out any more than the others, showing a really deft hand in blending. It doesn't taste like 3 beers mixed together, it tastes like an entirely new beer altogether. There's a really big and wonderful hot bourbon to this, really spikes the flavor well, with big barrel oak and vanilla, maybe a little of coconut, with chocolate and caramel in spades. There's a mild hint of smoke and toffee, too. This is just so substantial, and delicious. It's more-ish.

This has a thick, beefy mouthfeel, with a lower level of carbonation, and a rich, slightly creamy mouthfeel.

A really wonderful beer from some of the best barrel-agers in the country. I'm completely not surprised that this beer would come out wonderfully.

Bottle served in a snifter. Pours black and the nose is full of bourbon. Taste is a blend of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate and licorice. Finish has a little heat on it. This beer will probably age very well. Looking forward to trying again in a few months.

Preview keg on draft at Observation Room from 9/11/15

Appearance - Nice deep brown, close to black, small brown head that eventually faded and left a little lacing on the glass
Smell - full of booze and was almost turned off by it, granted it was cold right off tap
Taste - The barrel was present throughout from start to finish, I liked this as it wasn't booze up in front "in yo face muddafukka", I got small hints of plum and a lot of caramel. I did not get as much coffee as some others I spoke with did, but that could be attributed to the fact that I am not a huge fan of BA Wee Heavy so I kinda focused in on that instead of letting my brain and tongue realize all of the flavors present.
Mouthfeel - like a light speedway, medium body, not too thick, but not too thin either (not sure how better to describe it, apologies)
Overall - Lets just say I was glad I ended up buying 4 bottles. I thought the blend wouldn't work initially, but I have been converted. I do not feel the bottle needs time at all based on what I had off tap but that is also why I have multiple so I can test aging it down the road.

Edit: Basically lets say for numbers sake the booze on the nose was a 10, but the taste was 2.5 spread out at 4 different instances leaving the booziness from the nose all present but toned down quite a bit, but still stayed with you (I know this may make little sense, but not sure how else to describe it).

A - Dark brown/black pour with a thick toffee creamy colored lacing.

S - Bourbon, oak, deep roasted caramel malty sweetness buried under the bourbon.

T - Massive amounts of bourbon, oak tannin, dark chocolate, toffee, very light vanilla, and some citrus on the very end after it lingers for a few minutes.

M - Heavy, thick, viscous.

O - The bourbon in this beer is very forward but the blend between the different styles is nothing less than superb.

Had on tap at Alesmith. Excellent beer but not a significantly different flavor or overall profile from the beers that created it. Great beer but nothing particularly new or special if you've had all the 3 beers that went into it.

Tan head. Dark black in color.

Lots of bourbon, oak, vanilla, and a mix of malts. Caramel, toffee, chocolate.

Medium to full bodied. A pretty big beer. Warming and sweet. Ends sweet.

Really solid bottle. Enjoyed this much more the second time.

This is a pretty incredible beer. The blending is exceptional. I get all the components of the 3 beers blended. Another wonderful beer by Alesmith.

Dark brown body with a beige collar. Nice aroma of bourbon, oak, vanilla, brown bread. The taste is up a notch. Light sweetness. Complexity. Delicious.

Thanks to my company for shipping me to San Diego for two weeks, allowing me to bring back about 18 bottles via suitcase & Home Depot box. Including this 750ML dark-shaded bottle. Alesmith’s barrel-aging program never disappoints; never. Let’s go prove it.

The pour is very dark, but I’m not going to use the word black, carbonation is lower than a Cubs fan’s self-esteem (OK, there is actually some bubbling going on). Twenty plus minutes out of the fridge & the nose on this is dominated by the Wee Heavy component: sweet, malty, light vanilla & even lighter whiskey (bourbon?). Woody too, eventually. Interesting.

Reforged brings a blurring bat of booziness & barrel. High heat of alcohol & a roof-numbing shot of whiskey up front almost overwhelm the beer. If you can past the brushback there is a strong chocolate glove, deep vanilla, sweet malts that nip at smoked, few coconut slices. No coffee or roast at all. Mouthfeel takes after the light Numbskull. For all the perceived alcohol, I could shotgun a bomber or two of this.

Better than the BA Wee Heavy but doesn’t reach the heights of the BA Numbskull or Speedway Stout; I‘m fairly sure this one needs some time, so I‘ll be putting a couple bottles at the bottom of the well with the bodies for a while. Alesmith really should have called this Idiot Prius Driver, but I digress. Really good beer.

750ml bottle into snifter. Thanks for the bottle, Abel. Reviewed from notes.

A: Dark brown, near black, with a thin dark brown head that faded to a lasting collar.
S: Bourbon, chocolate, caramel, leather and vanilla. Lightly sweet overall.
T: Vanilla, leather, sticky caramel sweetness, slightly boozy bourbon, powdery chocolate, sticky hops, with a touch of leather, raisin, and a touch of red grape. Toffee, leather, and caramel, linger sweet in the aftertaste.
M: Fluffy full carbonation, full body, sweet and sticky mouthfeel. Lingering presence. Exceptionally smooth.
O: Super decadent and smooth, drinks very well. A near flawless sipper .
