Speedway Stout - HawaiianSpeedway Stout - Hawaiian
Notes: We often use Speedway Stout as a jet-black canvas for homages to things we hold dear, whether it's artisan coffee, a favorite edible or sumptuous flavor combination. The most recent variation of our celebrated imperial stout honors the culinary character of the Hawaiian Islands by combining the lush sweetness of coconut with vanilla and Ka'u coffee. Named after the region of Hawaii from which it hails, Ka'u is produced from some of the world's rarest coffee beans. Slow-grown beneficiaries of nutrient-rich volcanic soil and idyllic climate, Ka'u offers nuances of caramel and hazelnut plus a soft floral character, all of which marry seamlessly with natural sweetness from the vanilla and coconut as well as Speedway Stout's inherently rich, chocolaty character. Say aloha to something truly exceptional and evocative of its namesake isles.

On tap at Hollingshead’s in Orange, CA.

Straight up, flavor first, Deek second. This is like goi Nd mom a date with a girl that is hella pretty, all painted up with make up and lip stick... and you kiss her and your feeling it... but then you rest your ha d on her backside, and not really anything to grab onto. Ya feel me? Which is fine. Because Raul is an equal opportunity employer. I’m just saying, with her looks, If she had a little feel, she’d be a ten. And that’s where Alesmith Hawaiian comes I to play. AwesomE, beautiful , and gorgeous taste, but it just lacks a little feel.

Yep!

Excellent imperial stout that I found as a growler fill at a local beer store. Really excited to try this Hawaiian variant of a solid double stout from AleSmith. I found it excellent, though would have loved a little more coconut notes. Looks great, deep dark rich black opaque color with a little mocha cap of head and sheets of lingering lacing that lasted forever. Smells of deep rich chocolate fudge, medium roast coffee, toast, roasted nuts, caramel, vanilla, malt and some surprisingly faint coconut. Taste follows the nose, and again while well balanced and excellent it was hard to pick out the coconut flavors. High ABV was very well-hidden and I didn’t always sip this beer. A little more warming alcohol as the beer came to room temperature but not much more release of coconut. Smooth, rich, chewy, thick mouthfeel that coated the palate, and perfect amount of carbonation. An excellent beer!

On tap at Uno.

Look: large thick dark black, big creamy tan head. Small headcremains after settling with foamy legs.

Aroma: strong on coffee, touch of vanilla, don't really get the coconut.

Taste: bitter coffee, bittersweet cocoa, lots of roasty malt and coffee, but struggle to find coconut. I believe its there, but just overwhelmed by the coffee.

Feel: super thick and creamy, or maybe fudgy would describe better.

Solid stout, very good coffee flavor, but the variant falls behind regular speedway. Missing coconut is disappointing.

Pours a pitch black color with a thin foamy head. Head retention is mild and lacing is good. Mainly java aroma with roasted malts and mild vanilla. Don't really get the coconut. Roasted malts and vanilla on the taste with a java bitterness at the end. Maybe coconut?? Heavy bodied with mild carbonation.

L: Poured from a growler to a pint glass. Had a dark, mahogany brown color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a half inch of foamy, tan-colored, long-lasting head. Fantastic lacing.

S: A solid aroma of malt, coffee, nuts, coconut, and chocolate.

T: Tasted of a small amount of coconut (not a big component), a decent bit of chocolate (a subtle ingredient), a lot of malt (present throughout), some hazelnuts, and a whole ton of coffee. A warm, roasty, surprisingly subtle flavor. It's not quite the coffee bomb you would think, but rather a generally well-balanced stout. Focused and tasty.

F: An average amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium- to full-bodied.

O: A well done, if a little overrated, stout. Worth a try.

A: Black with 1/2" tan foam and decent lacing.
N: Coconut, coffee, chocolate, vanilla and nuttiness.
T: Follows the nose, nice coffee punch with dark chocolate bitterness, some light vanilla, and a little nut flavor.
M: Full with a decent bite of ABV.
O: A very nice stout, balanced and rich.

16oz growler filled at Barrels & Vines May 3, 2019. Poured into a tulip glass.

Pour: deep brown, slight tan head that leaves a thick ring and clouds. Decent bubble lacing.

Nose: chocolate, coffee, dark roast malt.

Taste: bitter chocolate, coffee, vanilla. Maybe some coconut but hard to say. Like someone else said, feel like there’s some pineapple, but...probably dark fruit tones. Burnt toast on the back end.

Mouthfeel: moderate carbonation. A little thin feeling but very smooth.

Overall: very drinkable, decently complex. Mix of bitterness and sweetness compliment each other. Good but not quite as good as I hoped. Definitely worth trying but might not buy again.

To be completely honest, I dont get a ton of coconut flavor in this but thats fine with me - I dont really want it. The coffee pairs well with the sweetness of the vanilla and Im assuming that the bitterness of the coffee is also whats toning down the coconut flavor, which I see as a win. Very nice beer, appropriately boozy and I sure wouldnt mind sitting on a Hawaiian beach with a bottle of this in one hand and a manapua in the other.

Had on tap. I will admit to be a big fan of base speedway stout, so it is not a surprise that I really enjoyed this one. Coconut and vanilla melded into the caramel sweetness perfectly, and gave a little more contrast to the roasted base. Body got a bit of a tangy hit from the coffee, which reeled in the volume a bit, but not to a detriment. Still creamy and full, a winning combo. I could have sweared I smelled pineapple but that is probably my brain messing with me with some association

Pours jet black with thin, chocolate colored foam.

Smell is sweet and intense. Big notes of chocolate, coffee and vanilla are joined by a subtle but distinct hint of coconut and just a tad of foak.

Taste is powerful and chocolatey to start. As the liquid swirls around your mouth, notes of burnt sugar, coconut, vanilla, roasted coffee appear. A mild sweetness then leads into a robust bitterness. Balance is impeccable, and pretty much zero booziness. As it warms, the sweetness backs off a bit and lets the coffee and vnilla shine. Great stuff!

Mouthfeel is thick and chewy, well carbonated.

Overall, another world class Speedway version.

The beer pours out a pitch black color, with a thin creamy khaki colored head----------- the aromas are of sweet molasses, light soy sauce, chocolate syrup, vanilla frosting, coffee and lesser coconut------------ the flavors are of coffee for days, bitter roasted malts, vanilla and light coconut cream, the beer has a thin to medium mouthfeel with a light bitterness on the finish-------------- overall this beer was exceptional - this beer was delicious so much coffee and vanilla, was hoping for more coconut and a fuller mouthfeel though

750ml bottle served in a big snifter. Don't see a date on the bottle.

Pours black with a small head and a medium amount of very fine carbonation. Smell is rich and roasty -- coffee and anise.

Taste is boozy, roasty, tons of coconut, a little coffee and vanilla. Chocolate.

Mouthfeel is thick and rich. Overall, it's good. I like it, but I don't love it.

Draft pour to snifter, dark brown with some tan head, excellent lacing. Nose if vanilla, coffee, chocolate. Taste has a good representation of the nose, coconut very light which I appreciate, coffee dominant, mildly bitter finish. Big body and average carbonation.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head. Aroma of floral coffee notes with sweet black chocolate notes is quite enticing. Taste is also a wonderful mix of floral coffee notes with some black chocolate notes, no bitterness, some residual sugar notes and light roasted malt notes. Body is full with nice creamy texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Wish I good have regular access to this beer.

Very boozy, richness of coconut, but slight sourness from vanilla, low carbonation and high grav end up very syrupy but not cloying. Interesting take on high abv stouts. Lower overall because I think vanilla usually detracts if over-extracted.

Appearance is very dark brown with a generous, creamy, very persistent, mocha head. The head eventually drops to a solid thin cap and leaves tons of lacing that leaves a new ring with each sip. Beautiful beer. I don’t detect any coconut in either the aroma or the taste but the Ka’u coffee is deliciously present in both. It has a slight sweetness that balances the slightly bitter dark roast finish. Full bodied and creamy smooth.

Consumed 2/17/18, review from notes

Note: Growler fill from Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury (VT)

A: Deep, super dark brown, very much jet black from a distance - pours with a medium sized, light brown head, fades to a nearly solid but wispy cap, leaves a web of lacing

S: Crazy amount of chocolate and some nice additions - dark chocolate, semisweet chocolate, chocolate cake, brownies - roasty coffee, with some burnt grain notes - huge amount of coconut - vanilla is also big, but not as huge as the coconut- some malty sweetness, perhaps more than normal Speedway

T: Like a chocolate coated coconut candy bar - in other words, a Mounds bar - huge amounts of chocolate - chocolate malt, semisweet chocolate, dark chocolate, chocolate brownies - massive amount of coconut, but not so much that it starts to taste like sun tan lotion - some rich coffee - medium bitterness - some caramel sweetness, lingers a bit

M: Heavy body, smooth, oily in the best way possible, finishes with some nice sweetness

AleSmith Speedway is a classic, and in my opinion, is basically a standard to which all other Imperial Stouts should be judged. Hawaiian Speedway is a nice riff on the base, and I think I would be glowing with an abundance of 5s if I only liked coconut more. My brain says this is an amazing beer, but my taste buds that do not appreciate coconut say no.

On tap at Goed Zuur. Looks like your typical speedway stout, super black and a dark tan head which was minimal. Aroma is coffee. The flavor is delicious coffee but no coconut nor vanilla on my palate. Still, a delicious iteration of Speedway Stout.

8oz pour at Dark Horse in St. Paul, MN. I saw this listed on their Untapped last week and couldn't really believe that it was still available - I finally drove over for a beer and then stopped at Barrel Theory for a few more.

Hawaiian Speedway is a slight deviation from your standard speedway - it's quite a lot sweeter, and the coffee is much less forward. Even the nose gives away the difference - with all of the coconut presence and sweetness, it would be easy to mistake this for a milk stout. There's also a bit of cinnamon or nutmeg (my palate sucks - sorry, that's one I can never easily differentiate) that is perfectly complementary. Love it.

The beer does, however, taste slightly thinner than standard Speedway. I can't hold that against it though. It's still absolutely delicious. I would happily drink this every single day.

On draft in a pint glass

Black, half inch light brown head

Milk chocolate, coffee aroma.

Sweet milk chocolate and light roast coffee. Finishes sweet. Coffee flavor is very bright, not bitter or acidic at all.

Medium body for the abv. Smooth.

Had on draft into a 10 oz snifter.
L: Pitch black, little bit of head. Good lacing as I drank it.
S: Smells like a nice stout, but I think the ingredients are actually competing in a way that they mute each other.
T: Good combo on the taste. Decadent without being anywhere close to too sweet. The sweet flavors do kind of overpower the coffee, which makes it not seem like a couple other speedway stouts I've had. But it works.
F: Great mouthfeel - like almost every Speedway stout I've had.
O: Really nice beer. I may be underrating it.

Poured into a snifter. Moderate head but it settles to rim bubbles. Nice streaks and blankets for lace. Deep dark brown. No light passes anywhere.

Mocha aroma with a stronger lean to the coffee than the dark chocolate.

This is an extraordinarily smooth and full flavored stout. The initial sip shoes an above average richness with a moderate carbonation level. The flavor starts chocolatey (semisweet) but the finish is strongly like coffee with cream. The "Hawaiian" flavors are subtle with the coconut standing out more than the vanilla. Long black patent malt bitterness for the aftertaste. Overall, this would be a difficult sour to beat in a competition.
