Style: American Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We often use Speedway Stout as a jet-black canvas for homages to things we hold dear, whether it's artisan coffee, a favorite edible or sumptuous flavor combination. The most recent variation of our celebrated imperial stout honors the culinary character of the Hawaiian Islands by combining the lush sweetness of coconut with vanilla and Ka'u coffee. Named after the region of Hawaii from which it hails, Ka'u is produced from some of the world's rarest coffee beans. Slow-grown beneficiaries of nutrient-rich volcanic soil and idyllic climate, Ka'u offers nuances of caramel and hazelnut plus a soft floral character, all of which marry seamlessly with natural sweetness from the vanilla and coconut as well as Speedway Stout's inherently rich, chocolaty character. Say aloha to something truly exceptional and evocative of its namesake isles.

On draft at the bottle release. Intense coconut nose, as it warmed the coconut really came out and pairs well with the coffee and vanilla. Medium body makes this one of the better speedway variants imo....

32oz. growler into a Cigar City snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Looks and smells just like regular speedway but a little less heavy on the coffee. Coconut presence is noticeably absent on the nose but it is very sweet with a nice vanilla component. This has always been a menacing looking beer and this variant is no different. Coconut is not apparent on the first sip but as this one warms, the nutty presence gets stronger and stronger. Vanilla complements this one nicely but I almost don't want it there as the added sweetness takes away from the coffee and coconut meld. Still, this is delicious! Full bodied, slick and oily to be sure. Drinks a touch boozy but really smooth and sticky. Aftertaste is a touch bitter... like toasted malt.

This is quite good but in my opinion, would actually be better without the added vanilla sweetness. Still really worth seeking out.

Coconut, Coffee, Chocolate... I've heard of "Mounds Bars" to describe beers before and I've even tasted some that I thought perfectly represented chocolate-coconut goodness but this is, as far as I've had, as good as it gets. Mouthfeel gets docked because I had it from cask but I'll update this after trying it from the bottle. From the cask, the feel was smooth and flat. My favorite Speedway variant I've had... come to think of it, this was one of the best stouts I've had, period!

Revisit: Out of the bottle I found this beer disappointing, the coffee was a little green and vegetal, which masked the vanilla and coconut. Out of the bottle I'd rate this near a 4.2-4.3, but I'll be remembering that cask pour when I think about this beer.

Big thanks to rudzud.

Pours a nice creamy thick almost 1 finger mocha head that fades at a med pace, pitch black beer thick with long legs.

Nose nice dark choc and light coconut, caramel notes, little cookie dough choc, little fudgey and caramel, nutty mild roasty coffee, fair nutty, nice chewy earthy coffee.

Taste is actually awesome, big cocoa, dark chocolate fudgey cocoa, little creamy, big coconut, creamy milky coconut, into mild nutty earthy coffee, little roasty, chewy fudge, caramel with coconut cream on top. Nice bitterness, earthy hop note with roasty bitterness as well. Little coffee lingering, more cookie dough with dark choc and little bitterness and lots of coconut lingering.

Mouth is fuller bod, decent carb, touch fudgey notes, creamy lush, no booze.

Overall started ok but then got much better, coconut was light at first but also got much better.

16.9 oz mini-growler poured into a snifter.
Purchased at Trenton Road Take Out in Levittown, PA.

Pitch black with virtually no head. No light penetration.

Coffee & cream, vanilla, milk chocolate, coconut milk, caramel, molasses, and roasted barley.

Milk chocolate, coconut milk, and vanilla. Medium roast coffee with cream, chocolate fudge, and roasted barley. Caramel, toffee, licorice, and molasses. Hints of cinnamon-esque booziness. Finishes with cocoa nib and an earthy roast.

Full bodied, silky, creamy, smooth, sticky, chewy, and warming.

Uber-complex. The coffee & cream and vanilla are in the forefront. Loads of chocolate afterwards. A bit light on the coconut. The 12% is well hidden.

Poured on tap in a goblet, the beer is jet black and oily thick, with a creamy, foamy, light tan head. Nose of rich milk chocolate, sweet toasted coconut, solid roasted coffee, and rich vanilla. Amazing. Smells like candy. Flavors are rich milk chocolate and coconut forward, rich and sweet and creamy, with a solid mocha coffee backbone. Amazingly balanced, smooth, and rich. So creamy and velvety in mouth, with a chocolate and coconut candy-like aftertaste. Smooth, creamy, layered finish. Fantastic beer!

picked up a growler of this at the Bev. pour is black with a creamy mocha head. good retention and leaves nice lacing... shes a looker!

nose is pretty light, but still very pleasant. as it warms up picking up scents of chocolate, coconut, vanilla, caramel, toasted wood and a bit of booze.

chocolate and sticky caramel up front... definitely some coffee notes as well and finishes very roasty and smooth. mouthfeel is right where it should be for this type of beer! drinkability over the top ... a glass of this stuff goes down way too easy.

overall its an excellent stout if your looking for something sweet, lush and smooth. personally I do prefer flavored stouts over a more traditional Russian imperial stout due to the rich and sweet flavors and in that aspect, this beer is tough to beat. probably shouldnt have paid what I did for a growler but ya only live once.

This is the base beer on coconut and vanilla steroids. Coffee influence is there but is overwhelmed by the coconut and vanilla influence. A bit over the top for me.

Serve On-Tap

A — Pours a pitch black hue into the 6oz glass, there is a slowly forming head that is dark brown and leaves behind some spots of heavy lacing.

S — Smell is incredible, with notes of toasted coconut, cocoa powder, cocoa butter, chocolate liquor, vanilla, Tahitian vanilla, semi-sweet chocolate, roasted malts, charred oak.

T — Loads of flavors with darkly rich notes of black chocolate, bakers chocolate, unsweetened chocolate liquor, leads way to coffee driven notes of acidic red berry and light spice. All succumbs to a resounding note of dessicated coconut, buttery and rich, chewy, roasted, toasty and sweet. A bit of vanilla sweetness helps to round out the roasted and semi acrid notes of bakers chocolate and dry coconut. A major amalgamation of dark flavors with notes of fresh Kona coffee, bitter chocolate, dried & toasted coconut, all on-top of a roasted malt bed.

M — Full bodied, rich, lingering aftertaste.

O — Incredible beer, so glad that I got to try some on-tap, such a remarkable depth of flavors. This is like drinking a dark chocolate mounds bar with a sidecar of espresso, just spectacular.

Nice Coconut nose, intensifies as it warms. Vanilla pairs well with the coconut and coffee, Great mouth feel we come to expect from Speedway. Overall fantastic beer. Second best of Grand PRix weekend only behind Triple Hammerhead

On tap at CBC 2016. Pitch black with a thin dusty-tan head. Coffee, chocolate and vanilla, very well balanced. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. A very pleasant beer, but not as good as the base beer.

A nice variant of Speedway. Pours jet black and was able to generate a very large head(not expecting much, but sure poured poorly and got a ton). Nothing too discernible in the smell, which is the only knock overall on the beer. Tastes that typical speedway-ish taste. A slight hint of coconut sweetness on the front, with coffee present in the aftertaste. The mouth feel on this beer is very thick and the aftertaste lasts a long time. Great enjoyable brew.

10 oz pour at Pats Tap
A-black as night with a mocha colored ring of foam.
S-dark chocolate, toasted coconut, burnt caramel all noted. Not getting pronounced coffee or vanilla.
T-similar taste. Lots of chocolatey roasted malt with a definite coconut taste. It tastes like a sweeter coconut version of the regular version. Not picking up the coffee.
M-fairly heavy bodied with a sweet yet slightly acrid finish. Pleasant. Moderately carbonated. Just a hint of booziness as it warms.
O-A dark chocolate stout with a fair amount of coconut. Prefer it over the regular version. A nice beer that I'd gladly drink but not worth the chase.

Pours dark with no visible carbonation with a creamy looking head. Coffee, chocolate (standard) for stout meet the nose. I have high expectations anticipating some coconut flavor - taste revealed the coffee/choc notes and slight sweetness on the back of palate-- if coconut was there I missed it. No comparison to Last Snow - this is a good stout but not the best I've had.
