A - Beautiful golden hue with loads of visible carbonation; a bit cloudy, with some sediment; nice white head with little lacing

S - Champagne, honey, and spring flowers

T - This is actually tough to describe - it's sweet, but barely; very floral, but I can't put my finger on the flowers; fruity, yet not distinctively one type - I get hints of raspberries and currants, but they come and go. Regardless of my inability to communicate precisely what elements I enjoyed, suffice it to say that this tastes amazing.

M - Bubbly and exceptionally smooth. Forget High Life - this is the champagne of beers.

D - Very drinkable for 11% - the alcohol is very well masked by the bouquet and complexity of the flavors. I shared this with a few friends, but I'm pretty sure I could down a 750 by myself (and perhaps even want more).

Another fantastic AleSmith brew, Horny Devil substantially exceeded my expectations. This is a fascinatingly deep beer, but its so easy to drink that I had to consciously slow down to enjoy it. I'll be seeking this out and looking forward to the next time I'm able to taste it.

On tap at Alesmith, rich gold, head doesn’t stay long, fruity sweet spices balance well. Feels lighter than expected. Overall one of my favorites and the reason I stopped st Alesmith while in the area.

750ml bottle purchased in mid-October. Poured into my Chimay Chalice.

A- Body is a rich gold hue. Pours with a creamy 1 finger white head. Head fades to a smooth creamy eggshell appearance. Fogginess is medium and basically uniform throughout-though some tiny yeast particles can be seen floating throughout the body. Bubbles are constantly rising to the top-but that's a feature of the glass.

S-Smell is decadent. Probably the best smelling American BSPA I have come across yet. Nose is a perfect balance of bready Belgian Ale Yeast, citrus, Belgian candy sugar, and wonderful floral hop aromas.

T-Pleasant taste upfront with a nice balance of Belgian candy sugar, Belgian ale yeast, citrus, and coriander. The character of all the initial flavors stays strong for the finish but a big presence of floral hop flavor and hints of alcohol are added. Left to linger is a residual bitterness of hops and alcohol that has medium strength; and loads of sugary and bready sweetness to balance it out. A great bitter-sweet taste.

M- High carbonation and body consistency reflects the high alcohol content. Somewhat smooth from the yeast-but there could be a lot more here to balance the alcohol.

D-This is a very nice BSPA. I will buy this again the next time I am out-of state (as well as the Alesmith and Yulesmith IPAs). Alesmith is quickly becoming one of my favorites-but I can't get it unless I take an 80 min trip. The alcohol is quite noticable in the mouthfeel and this is a great example of my favorite style-but is not my favorite example. The mouthfeel could use some improvement. I do wish that more of these American-Belgians were brewed with the same craftmanship as this one.

750ml capped bottle. Bottled on 11/4/14.

Served slightly chilled into a goblet as suggested on the label. Horny Devil is a pale golden color with near perfect clarity. The head is thin and white.

Aroma is just right for the style with subtle nuances from the yeast. Banana and coriander come through.

Flavor is sweet up front with topical fruit and black pepper. There is good balance as it finishes effervescent and dry.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and nicely carbonated. Balanced and drinkable for 10% abv.

Overall a very good American version of the style. Probably not as much depth as a true Belgian but nearly as tasty.

750mL bottle poured into a tulip.

Pours a hazy golden yellow with a small white head that recedes fairly quickly to a small collar and leaves no lacing.

Aroma is sweet with lots of fruity esters and some light spiciness from the coriander. There is plenty of candi sugar and light fruits in the nose as well.

The taste is also sweet and very fruity with lots of candied apricots and peaches. There is definitely the big sweet candi sugar backbone with the spices coming out in the finish, coriander and cloves specifically.

The mouthfeel is fairly full bodied and bordering on syrupy due to a fairly low carbonation.

This is definitely not one of my favorites from Alesmith, but it's a tribute to their beer that it's still head and shoulders better than most beers out there. The mouthfeel is lacking for me and needs a bit more carbonation and the fruity sweetness gets a little much after a while. Still, very good.

8/25/19 This is the first time I've done this... But I just erased my entire review and radically reduced my rating (+8.4% to -9.8, a swing of 18.2%). How is this possible?
Because there is a rule on BA that we sometimes forget. That Rule is: "Don't review when drunk."
This may not have been true when I wrote my first review of Horny Devil, but it reads like I probably was.
I don't like to think that my 1900+ reviews are crap, but that one was. So, I get to start anew amidst 406 other reviews.

Now, it is possible all this 'mea culpa' is prompted by the 4-pack that I just bought came from a bad batch... or old.
If not, then I probably was intoxicated from Horny Devil's 10% and probably even some other ale.
Trying to play off the standard set by Duvel, Horny Devil is not a good-Looker (not much foam and not much color and almost no scintillating bubbles.) Quite simply, it fails. Only the color is reminiscent.
Despite that dive, Smells are subtle; just enough fruit and spice. But for Taste, we start that slippery slope downward, in part because the alcohol does a face-slam. Feel is booze, not the bubbles I prefer.
OA points are derived from AleSmith's reputation, but not its Horny Devil.

Appearance is nice golden color with two fingers of head. This belgian strong pale ale has a nose of coriander, belgian yeast, pear and sugar. Upon sipping, it has a taste of banana, apple, candy, some bitterness. It is a sweet taste, but not too much so, quite pleasant. Mouthfeel is med-full, quite a bit of carbonation to it. Alcohol is hidden to an extent, so keep in mind it is a bit high, even for the style. But, it is a mighty tasty beer.

First thing to hit ya is the wonderful aroma, yeast and a slight honey sweetness .. . pours a light murky creek river tan,..the ole miss, the ole man.. . has a wonderful all around feel; from the uplifting yeasty aroma, to the absolute clean cut mouthfeel.. roll em up .. very easy to drink, a sipper with loads of complex fun flavours; peach, mango, yeast, honey, plum, tits, pineapple are just some of the flavours ... . thank goodness KotH is getting canceled .. . The alcohol level is absolutely perfect, works well .. . A fantastic well made, enjoyable, empowering, manly yet could be enjoyed by any one kinda person, flavourful kinda brew ... another winner by Alesmith.. . but be careful, packs a huge secret punch...

Bottled in March 2014

A: Poured into a Duvel tulip to a clear light golden yellow topped by a finger and a half of dense whie head which retains well and leaves some lacing
S: Smells of cracker like malts, doughy bread, and orchard fruits with some pear like notes. Slight spice as well.
T: Taste is orchard fruits and some white pepper with some dry pale malts and bread dough. Really strong fruity esters with a little banana but mostly orchard fruits. Swallow is spice and slight yeast with a hint of band aids with some lingering apples and pears.
M: This beer has a moderate amount of body with a slightly slick feel on the palate. Carbonation is effervescent but not prickly while the beer has a drying finish.
O: Overall this beer drinks surprisingly well for being over four years old. Tons of flavor and a good amount of complexity. It hides the age well and desn't show any off notes or hints of oxidation. This is worth a try if you like the style and can find it.

Pours a clear yellow with an inch thick white head. Lots of bubbles. Smell floral, with strong belgian yeast and fruity notes. Finishes with pronounced malt. Taste is very much like the smell. Malt is strong, followed by white grape, pear, and phenol. Mouthfeel is dry and crisp. Alcohol warms you very quickly.
