Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Taking its name from both Mokha, a historical port city for the distribution of African coffees, and the Sidamo province in Ethiopia, Mokasida is a regional blend of coffees that showcases the subtle characteristics of East African beans. When paired with the chocolate and roast character of our imperial stout, Mokasida imparts notes of cocoa, blueberry, and sweet potatoes to make a truly unique beer.
Also from East Africa and near and dear to our hearts are The Lost Boys of Sudan, a group of civil war refugees from various villages that were able to overcome extraordinary peril during their flight from persecution. AleSmith Brewing Company proudly employs members of The Lost Boys of Sudan and supports the California Lost Boys and Girls Foundation (CLBGF). A portion of proceeds from the sale of this beer will go towards CLBGF.

a new edition of the classic featuring what is very obviously a highly special coffee edition. this is sure to be famous. enjoyed on tap, but i sure hope they bottle this one. the coffee is way more intense, earthy, bitter, and chocolate forward than the original speedway. it even has a sweet mellow note to it, almost like an oak resting would do for the beer, but this is not barrel aged and i reckon that is all from the coffee used. they must have used more of it than in the original recipe, or it must be more intensely flavored than their local roast, as there are heavy tobacco, mineral, and astringent bitter characteristics on display in aroma and flavor here. unbaked brownie batter, silky bitter espresso crema, high carbon charcoal, mild malt sweetness, raisin, booze. the coffee is without question the primary flavor agent here, well ahead of the dark malts in here, but there is somehow no acidity, no breakdown of the bigness, no diminishing of the base beer, even though it is to some extent overpowered. really precarious but beautiful balance in this one. the alcohol makes it a slow sipper, and bitterness is real high, higher than any residual sugar and lingering long, ramping up too with temperature. i have still not had a ton of speedway variants, at least compared to how many exist, but this is a pretty special one for me. up there with the vietnamese, but so totally different on the coffee side of things. outstanding stout, one for the ages...

I was stoked to the get this bottle of beer. I had this beer on tap several years ago. Every variation of Speedway Stout I have tried was tasty. The beer is 54 degrees and is served in a snifter. The beer produced a two finger head. The head is a light tan and creamy. The beer is dark brown to black and SRM 37. The head dissipated fast leaving lacing on the glass.
A strong roasted coffee, espresso, dark roasted malt, bready, char, earthiness, yeast, dark chocolate, and burnt sugars for the aromas.

Strong roasted coffee, dark roasted malt, bready, burnt sugars, dark chocolate, earthiness, yeast, molasses, and wood.

The mouthfeel of the beer is chewy.

The body of the beer is full, the finish is long, and a medium carbonation.

This beer is awesome. The coffee in the beer is pronounced. This beer showcases the best of the Speedway Stout and the coffee.

Pitch black with a small tan head. A little bit of lace.
Roasted malt aroma. Some sweetness.
Coffee and cocoa. Coffee more prominent as the beer warmed. Some fruit.
A sweet, bigger bodied stout. Alesmith hits another one out of the park.

On tap at The Nova in Hudson, Wisconsin. 10 oz. serving in a chalice.

Appearance: Color is jet black. Moderate amount of bubbles and a solid finger of light tan head that settles into a thin creamy patch.

Smell: A roasty and sweet dark malt driven aroma with a scent of coffee beans, chocolate, and milk. Big scent of African coffee beans with some hints of blueberry. Dark roasted malt with notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, toast, biscuit, caramel, toffee, and smoke with yeast. Sweet scent of vanilla, milk, syrup, and molasses. Hints of dark fruit. A really nice rich aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a rich and roasty dark malt driven taste with notes of coffee beans, chocolate, and milk. Big upfront presence of African coffee beans with some notes of blueberries. Dark roasted malt with notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, biscuit, toast, smoke, toffee, and caramel along with some yeast. Sweet taste of lactose, vanilla, syrup, and molasses. Some undertones of dark fruit. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, creamy, slick, and fairly syrupy. Alcohol is hidden pretty well.

Overall: Another really good variant on Speedway. Good milk chocolate sweetness with the African coffee bean roast.

Dark black brew, topped with a firm brown head with good retention.

A ton of coffee on the nose, to go with chocolate and roasted barley.

Thick decadent brew! Tons of coffee, accented with chocolate and roasted barley. Remarkably smooth and thick. As good a variant as I've had, and maybe even better than the original.

750 mL bottle. Black body. Smells of coffee and chocolate. Tastes of rich chocolate and rich coffee. Has just a bit of spice in the back end. Medium heavy. Good stout, nice coffee flavor, but it's nothing that I'm distinguishing from regular Speedway.
