BEER INFO

Brewed by:
AleSmith Brewing Company

Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We've finally teamed up with our friends at Pizza Port Brewing Co., one of our favorite breweries in San Diego. When deciding what to make, we figured something excessively hoppy was the logical choice, and so this collaboration brew was born. This triple IPA is an intensely hoppy and bitter San Diego-style IPA. The light malt character and light body allow aggressive notes of pine, mango and citrus fruits to overtake the palate, while a dry finish allows it to remain crisp and refreshing. Make the Logical Choice and enjoy this beer immediately, much like the brewers did leaving work to enjoy it in sunny San Diego. Cheers!

Type: 12-oz. can
Glass: Beer Nerd 12-oz. tulip
From: Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $2.68 (because of 10 percent off for a variety 6-pack)
Purchased: March 28, 2018
Consumed: March 29, 2018
Reviewed as: American Double / Imperial IPA
Misc.: No canned on date

Picked this up with five others at Bine & Vine to get the 10 percent off, and a 6-pack of Firestone Lager. Had seen this out in stores for a couple of weeks and knew I wanted to pick one up. I mean AleSmith and Pizza Port? How good is that? Can description read, “We've finally teamed up with our friends at Pizza Port Brewing Co., one of our favorite breweries in San Diego. When deciding what to make, we figured something excessively hoppy was the logical choice, and so this collaboration brew was born. This triple IPA is an intensely hoppy and bitter San Diego-style India Pale Ale. Cheers!” No idea of the hops going in, but seemed like a Logical Choice for my 2,000th official review on Beer Advocate.

Poured a clear gold color with 2-to-3 fingers of rocky off-white head. Lots of bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass at different speeds. Outstanding uneven foamy lacing. World-class foamy retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled a lot of different flavors, making me think there were a lot of hops in it. Picked out bubblegum, Mosaic, nectarine, peach, floral, pine, dank resin, papaya, Simcoe, Citra, mango, grapefruit, tangerine, passion fruit and candied sugary notes. From the can I got nectarine, passion fruit, papaya and bubblegum. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted almost as good as the nose. In order got bubblegum, Mosaic, papaya, viney berry, passion fruit, spicy Simcoe, mango, bitter tangerine rind, pine, dank resin, grapefruit and Citra. If I had to guess other hops I’d say good guesses would be Amarillo, Chinook, Ekuanot and Warrior. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Abrupt, bitter, spicy finish. (Feel - 4.00)

I liked this one overall, but not quite as good as I thought it was going to be. Still outstanding. (Overall - 4.00)

Logical Choice, a TIPA collab between the outstanding Pizza Port and Alesmith Breweries out in San Diego, is a hophead’s and IPA lover’s dream come true. Pine and citrus dominate on nose and palate, with a nice touch of mango. The can claims it has a dry finish, and, to an extent, that’s true. But there’s also a very distinctive malt/ nut note that comes through for me. Not a juice-bomb, and just very slightly hazy, don’t expect a NEIPA-like experience. But expect an excellent one, especially with that 10% registering on the Richter Scale. If it weren’t for that, this would make an excellent summer session beer. But sometimes Sessions can be overdone. ( No disrespect intended to the current AG.) Beautiful work here, @pizzaportbrewingco and @alesmithbrewing ! I’d get this again in a heartbeat!

Picked up a 32 oz Growler from Kings Beer & Wine earlier today for $8.00.

Beer poured golden with a solid white head that has some very good hang time.

Nose is citrus and floral hops.

Taste is very well balanced. There is a nice combination or grapefruit, gooseberry, and pine over an ample malt base. Finish is a touch of rind and pine.

Mouthfeel is light bodied and very refreshing for a 10% abv brew.

Overall this is an impressive old school ipa. I am very impressed with the attention to the flavor balance and feel. Recommended!

A: A cloudy pale yellow in color with a small white head.

S: Big pine resin with cloying tropical fruits.

T: Dank and resinous with juicy, juicy tropical fruits.. A touch cloying, but damn. A bit of booze in the finish.

M: Medium thick but the moderate carbonation seems to lighten it a bit.

O: Certainly an assertive brew.. tasty, strong, and interesting.

Pours a clear light orange with fine, soft foam.

Smell is powerful with a bucket load of piney resin and plenty of citrus.

Taste is massively hoppy and bitter. Piney resin and grapefruit combine for a long, lingering finish.

Mouthfeel is medium, and quite sticky.

Overall, this is way more balanced than it should be. Pizza Port and Aesmith making a triple IPA? I expected something that would just murderize my taste buds, but this is actuallly very drinkable and balanced, and tasty as hell.

Clear deep gold beer brimming with what I'll call dank fruit resin... Tropically fruity on the nose and immediately on the tongue, but then this shellac of dank resin crept over my tongue as the bitterness sank in... Mild sweetness, smooth, but with a little tack and coat... Medium-weight, modest carbonation - started off with a full head, slimmed to a thin cap that lasted until the end and trailed lace down the glass. Trace of the 10% abv is apparent, but I didn't consider that a detraction. Big beer but drinks lean - the taut bitterness is key. For my tastes, this beer was great. Coulda bought more than one, now I wish I had. May very well merit a return trip to the store of purchase... 6/23/17 canning...

L - bright yellow, cloudy, and no clarity. Gorgeous IPA

S - equally bitter and juicy.

T - well balanced, not a typical bitter WC IPA. Delicious

F - light bodied and medium carbonation

O - the colab of 2 of my fav breweries does not disappoint!

6/6/18 - On tap at TRIA in Philly during PBW. Served in signature T tecu stemmed glass. Dark golden copper with head that dissipates, but come right back with a swirl. Subtle aroma yields a nice smooth and hoppy taste. Not so bitter. Get some.

Look: It pours clear golden with a slightly off white head. Head retention is moderately low.

Smell: It has strong aromas of tropical fruits to include pineapple, mango, and cantaloupe. There are hints of berries in the background.

Taste: The flavors are full of pineapple, mango, and cantaloupe with some berries and bread in the background. There are also some floral elements.

Feel: It is moderately heavy with a bit of slickness to it. There is some pleasant alcohol warming with a bit of harshness with bitterness in the finish.

Overall, it is a complex hoppy beer with plenty of tropical elements and a strong bitter bite in the end.

Look: Pours something between amber and orange, crystal clear. About a finger of white head, with bubbles of varying sizes. The head retention is quite weak, as expected for the style. Minimal lacing left on the glass, as expected for the style. There are also bubbles flowing up throughout the whole glass. Also, alcohol legs for days.

Smell: Fairly subdued. It smell like your typical shelf TIPA — bitter citrus notes, and just a bit of the floral stuff, maybe a bit of passion fruit.

Taste: At 120 ibu, this beer is very bitter, and this is the first thing you notice. Bitterness dominates everything from start to finish. There is some malt-induced sweetness in the middle, but it gets completely overtaken by the bitterness. Not sure that I can pick out any distinct fruit flavors, except for some grapefruit. Alcohol is hidden very well — I couldn't tell in a million years that this thing is 10% abv. Alcohol is slightly noticeable as the beer warms.

Feel: Full bodied, but generally very standard for the style. Carbonation is about medium overall, and medium in style. The beer

Overall: A very enjoyable TIPA. This is a great representation of what a West Coast TIPA should be. It ain't Pliny, but for a can I just picked off the shelf for $2, it'll sure do.

Pours a clear amber orange with a finger plus of white head that sticks around for a bit.
Smells of citrus and pine. A bit of sweet malt coming through as well
Taste follows, grapefruit, piney, pithy, with a sweet malt backbone.
Medium bodied.
Overall a tasty West Coast IPA that I was happy to find in GA.

Canned 6/23/17
12 oz. can poured into an IPA glass.

It pours the color of apple juice and crystal clear. A big, soapy white head pushes it's way past the constricted mouth of the glass.

The nose is robust and hits me with tropical pineapple and mango aromas the second I started the pour. A closer whiff reveals more of the same along with a sweet bready malt note. These same notes are where the tasting starts before moving to a more piney resinous flavor. It opens with some alcohol as well but this gives way to a nice overall sweetness before turning mildly bitter. The bitterness builds slightly to the finish with some heat and a small sour aftertaste. The sour/ acidic aftertaste builds and coats my tongue to the point of numbing it. This did ease as I slowed down a bit. Otherwise the body is soft and has a some weight to it.

Overall this was pretty good once I got past the tongue coating bit.
