Notes / Commercial Description:
Don’t spend this Single Awareness Day alone – grab a beer! This red-blooded cousin of Evil Dead Red Ale, our Halloween Brew, is a beautiful crimson color. Notes of caramel, toast, and bittersweet chocolate balance an intense bouquet of floral hop aromas that we know you’ll fall in love with. The finish leaves a pleasant, full-bodied sweetness on the palate that won’t spread angry rumors about you to all your friends like that one time when I was…ohh…uhh…Happy Valentine’s Day!

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Lagunitas mason jar
From: Costco in Santee (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $4.99
Purchased: Jan. 11, 2015
Consumed: Jan. 29, 2015
Misc.: Bottled on Dec. 22, 2014

Poured a reddish, brown, mahogany hazy color with five fingers of khaki-tan, frothy head. Excellent spiderweb, layered, lacing on the sides of the glass all the way down. Great retention on the top. (Sight - 4.75)

Smelled a pleasant mix of hops up front and malts late. Got floral hops, light grass hops, Citra hops, sweet chocolate, caramel, toffee, chocolate milk, hints of roasty nuts and raspberries (wishing?). (Smell - 4.25)

Taste wasn’t as good as the nose, but still decent. Got floral hops, bitter grassy hops, chocolate, chocolate milk, caramel, toffee, roasty malts, toast, nuts and faint vanilla. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average carbonation. Bitter, abrupt finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This was pretty good for the style. One of the best looking beers I’ve seen in a long time. (Overall - 3.75)

Reviewed from cursory notes - on-tap @ Surly Goat - served in a nonic.

Cerise-highlighted, crimson liquid topped a smattering of seashell foam. Fluffy lacing, good retention.

Aroma is hop-forward with pine along with an array of floral notes.

Moderate initial bitterness is tamed by a cherry-kissed caramel-apple sweetness on the palate. Base malt shines through, and the finish is clean and fairly dry. Very good flavors, though not as complex as the nose would suggest.

Light-bodied, yet creamy and pleasant.

Very easy drinking, this seems to have a bit more fruit and a bit less bite (without sacrificing freshness of hop aromas) compared to the last release of Evil Dead Red...

On-tap at Hollingshead's in Orange, CA, seemed appropriate to drink it during the second week in February, drunk with fellow BA's chefscott79 and BrewbakerE,

A: Pours a dark red, with a full cap of tan foam, good lacing.

S: Hoppy for a red, grapefruit and caramel malt.

T: Dry caramel malt mixes with white grapefuit hops to make a really good tasting beer, simple flavour, but very affective.

M: Solid, dry for a red, resiny, medium-bodied.

D: A very good red ale, probably one of the best I've ever had, defintiely worth a try if on-tap.

This beer had the misfortune of immediately following the superb Pliny the Younger in my tasting regimen.

Pours brown with ruddy highlights. Small white head. Smells like caramel malt and some sort of earthy background.

Taste is primarily malt. There's some vanilla, maybe some darker fruits, and definitely some pine (not much grapefruit) hop content. A good beer, but certainly not a great one.

A: amber/brown/red with a tan head.

S: hoppy like an IPA, but sweeter.

T: again, hoppy like an IPA, but much sweeter, but also reminded me slightly of a porter or stout due to the caramel/chalky aftertaste.

M: A bit too sweet for my tastes, as I'm not a huge fan of red ales, but still very drinkable. Kind of a weird hybrid of ale, porter and stout as mentioned above. I picked up a 22-oz bomber from my local shop for $3.50 on clearance, evidently they've had it left over since February. Not bad at all for that price.
