Speedway Stout - Double BarrelSpeedway Stout - Double Barrel
Notes: This variation of Speedway Stout has gone through two different maturations in two types of oak barrels to develop its complex flavor profile. The extended aging period in freshly used bourbon barrels helped the beer develop rich notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak. The beer's aging process in Portuguese port barrels added notes of raisin and plum, as well as wine-like tannins. The beer was also combined with locally roasted coffee to further balance its profile of chocolate and roasted malts.

Appearance: Pours espresso colored with ruby highlights; the beige head is rather small and there are a few dots of lace; leggy

Smell: A range of dark fruit (raisin, prune, fig and date) blends with the chocolate, vanilla and coffee; oaky, with Bourbon and Port tones

Taste: Chocolate, molasses and coffee forward, with the dark fruit elements detected in the aroma emerging; after the swallow the oak barrel tones from the Bourbon and Port arrive to create a Brandy-like aspect

Mouthfeel: Full body and creamy with moderate carbonation

Overall: I wasn't sure whether Bourbon and Port would go together but they sure work well in this Speedway variant

Dark brown with a slight transparency, and topped with a light brown foam.

Smells of chocolate, black liquorice, soy sauce, and a hint of bourbon oak.

Chocolate, bourbon forward, slightly fruity then ends with a savoury roasted meat quality.

Medium, slightly oily body, moderate to low carbonation.

Drinking this at the brewery in San Diego, CA, June 1st, 2019. One of the best out there in my opinion!

Tasted this on tap at Ansari's Eagan during Speedway tap takeover. Of the 4 Speedway variants I tried, this version was not my favorite. It must have been the flavor from the Port barrels that wasn't quite my thing.

Draft at AleSmith Anvil & Stave.

Black opaque appearance with foam present around the edge of glass. Appears to be of lower viscosity/thin. Loads of barrel presence on the nose. Flavor is nutty and oaky. Some raisin, with mild vanilla and chocolate. But booziness here is unmistakable! Medium mouthfeel.

Black, medium brown lacing.

Coffee, dark chocolate, bourbon, port wine.

Taste: coffee and bourbon dominate. Vanilla, dark chocolate undertones.

Mouthfeel: full-bodied, just a touch over-carbonated for my taste.

On tap. Tan head. Black color.

Lots going on here. The port shows a lot. Has a red wine like flavor to it. Fudgy with molasses. Bourbon in the back end. Coffee and roast is the undertone. Full bodied. Thick, smooth. Finishes with tannin flavors. Really awesome.

Rich, rich nose to Double Barrel Speedway Stout - I was impressed by how much depth the port barrel adds to the taste. I'm slightly surprised that there are supposed to be chocolate notes to the beer. The slight roastiness is excellent.

I was slightly sceptical when they delayed the release... But they were right! Whatever they did worked so well. So much flavor. Love the little port wine kick that melds so well with the bourbon barrel flavor. A

750ml bottle

Pours maroon pitch black with a fairly dense creamy dark tan foam head. Smells like super rich raisins, prunes, dried figs, dates, toffee, vanilla, loads of oak barrel, sweet bourbon, port wine, dried fruit, fruitcake, brown bread, nutty caramel, roasty toasted malts, chocolate, molasses, coffee, dark fruit, cherry, with earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like super rich booze soaked raisins, prunes, figs, dates, dried fruit, fruitcake, brown bread, toffee, vanilla, oak barrel, sweet bourbon, port wine, nutty caramel, roasty toasted malts, chocolate, molasses, coffee, dark fruit, cherry, with earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels thick and chewy, medium bodied, creamy smooth with moderate carbonation. Overall a real great bourbon and port wine barrel aged imperial stout with coffee.

T - Dark cocoa with a lingering dark cocoa finish, toasty, oak, port wine, red grape skin, a hint of cherry, and boozy.

M - Thick, full bodied, heavy, and lip smacking sticky.

O - Complex and a fabulous beer.

Well, this was over hyped. Better than Hawaiian, worse than that 16 BA Speedway

Overall, its fruits and raisins with a whiskey overtone. Good body, light coffee

I would buy it in the store, but wouldnt trade a kidney for it

Poured jet black with a thin tan head. The smell is loaded with cocoa aromas along with some boozy heat. The taste is silky chocolate, not much coffee in this version. There is plenty of Barrel flavors going on. The feel is good. Overall this beer is excellent!

Had on tap at bottle craft. Out of all the speedways ive had in the past, this one has been by far the most sophisticated. I really enjoy wine and port. Typically when I've had port barrel beers, the sweetness is over the top coming off slightly tart. The port combination with bourbon is insane. The backend of the port as this heats up gives a beautiful oaky character like a fine brandy bordeaux mix. The mouthfeel could be thicker. Rbavss has the best mouthfeel of any speedway and almost any stout I've ever had so this isn't quite there but really nice for a port barrel blend.

Overall what an experience. I can only imagine what a year or two would do to this.

This is in the running for the best beer Ive ever had. Smooth, rich, dark, amazing. You get subtle coffee notes intertwined with bourbon barrel richness and complexity, finished with the woody, sweetness of the port barrel. This beer is a whale and a half.
