A HUGE thanks goes to prototypic for sharing this gem!

A - Pours reddish brown. It's pretty dark but some sienna is easily noticed on the edges of the glass. The thick tan head rises to an impressive two and a half to three fingers deep. It quickly turns rocky and sticks around for a while. Lacing is pretty minimal but overall it looks very good.

S - Caramel kicks it off. A lighter wheat twang comes and goes quickly. Powdered cocoa has a very strong presence in this version of Decadence. Warm alcohol is constantly there but stays in check and never gets in the way. Sweet towards the end with hints of cooked caramel and banana.

T - Taste follows smell closely. Lots of caramel sweetness shows up all through the flavor. Wheat is a little stronger than the aroma would lead you to believe. Still, it's mild. Cocoa is present throughout and adds a nice addition to the sweet caramel. Banana and coconut come and go but stay in the background for the most part. Light smokiness on the end that really works well for this brew. Very well.

M - Medium bodied with a smooth carbonation that comes close to creamy. Finish is mostly sweet with a touch of dryness.

D - Drinkability is very good for a brew that comes in at 9%. I expected to take my time with this one but it's just too good and smooth to stick around in the glass for any length of time. The 750 ml bottle was split but I'd have no problem putting away the whole bottle. A little age seems to have worked really well for this brew. Even though it's not quite to style, it still remains a great brew in it's own right. another success from Alesmith Brewing Company.

The beer pours a medium brown color with a tan head. The aroma is strong bananas with some caramel malt and chocolate notes. The flavor is banana and cloves with some other spices as well as brown sugar and chocolate. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Alesmith got it right with this beer.

A bomber that I finished, and I am a fan of this style. Brown luxerious chocolate colured body, with a little white head. A little chocolate and wheat in the aroma. Average mouthfeel in density, soft on the palate. Sweetish, though not overly, a nice balance of chocolate malt, quality wheat that carried a little tangyness.

Aging a weizenbock seemed like a strange idea to me, this bottle is 4 months old, and I decided I couldn't wait any longer. Poured from a 750mL bottle into my 500mL Aventinus weizenbecher (or whatever you call this glass).

Initially, despite a cautious pour, the entire upper bulb of the glass filled with a dense active light khaki head. Beneath this churns a rosewood (dark but fairly clear) liquid with sangria highlights and a hint of amber on the bottom edge. Lacing is lightly soapy and trailed by a thin layer of gloss. Good retention.

One swirl of the glass and the drosophilia come running - always a good (if annoying) indicator of rich esters in the nose. The fruit fly was correct, as this is loaded with roasted red banana, figs, and fruit-cake. Beneath the alcohol (which while noteworthy, isn't scalding or solvent-like) the beer next delivers a smooth rush of malt which is almost buttery (not diacetyl) and caramel-like.

Sweet rum/whiskey cake topped with fresh unsweetened whipped cream on the palate - bready, but there is a tartness that supersedes the cavalcade of melanoidins I've come to expect from a great weizenbock - a hint of lemon juice and orange zest don't gel with the rest of the profile so well, though they do combine with a caramel flavor to suggest an almost lactic tartness which adjusts the finish away from excess sweetness.

Medium bodied, creamy with just the right amount of carbonation.

This would make a wonderful pairing or marinade for many types of sausage, and while decent on its own, it really improves when served with food.

To be fair, I'll buy another bottle and age it for a couple years as suggested, then revisit this review...

2009 Decadence pours a very dark brown color. It's a little hazy, but when held to light has dark burgundy highlights. A large tan head caps it off and stands nearly three fingers tall. It dissipates very slowly, and leaves a light to moderate coat of lace in its wake.

The nose good, but isn't spectacular. It kicks off with some spicy notes. Pepper and clove are most notable. Unfortunately, I'm not getting much banana. Maybe a little. That's disappointing. Sweet caramel and chocolate malts are definitely present and accounted for. The chocolate variety smells cocoa-esque. A little dark fruit is secondary. Smells mostly like raisin. Yeast is rather prominent throughout. Alcohol is noted, but isn't overly strong.

The flavor is likewise good, but isn't anywhere near mind blowing. It has a pretty good malty base that features cocoa-like chocolate and light caramel flavors. It's not quite as sweet as I expected. Not a bad thing. Clove and pepper spices are easily noted. There is a little banana present, but I'd like more. Just my preference. Yeast is rather prominent and resonates throughout. Raisin is a complementary flavor and works pretty well. Alcohol is definitely noticeable in taste. Maybe a little boozy. It's not quite warming, but it's not far off. Finishes spicy with a tangy dark fruit twist.

The body is on the lighter side of medium. Carbonation is active, but the bubbles feel light. It's relatively smooth, but not creamy. Drinkability is good. The flavor's not perfect, but it is pretty good. I'm splitting the 750, but could've probably tackled it alone. For a big beer, it is rather easy drinking. But, I do enjoy Weizenbocks, so perhaps there is room to disagree.

I had really high hopes for 2009 Decadence. I'm a big Weizenbock fan. How is it? It's good, but isn't a great release. Personally, I think it needs more banana and a little less booziness. Other than that, Alesmith did a pretty credible job. It's not exactly what I'd hoped, but it is good and I'm always glad to try a Decadence release.

Poured out a medium chestnut brown with a thin one finger head. Smell is banana, clove and some nail polish remover. Taste is similar, lots of banana and clove with a significant alcohol presence in the finish/after taste. Slight sweetness, lots of spices, but banana and clove dominate the flavor. Medium body, but a little hard to drink. For me the clove and banana flavors are overwhelming and distracting and the alcohol in the finish begins to get intense after a few sips. It's strong, a little too strong. Maybe time will calm this one down but as of right now it's a bit much for me, but a descent interpretation of the style.

On tap at the AleSmith event at City Beer (well, actually at Triptych across the street).

Pours dark brown with reddish hues and a nicely formed beige head, which leaves some good lacing.

Aroma is fairly typical for a well-crafted version of this style. Wheat, banana, clove, raisin, caramel, and vanilla.

Flavor is similar to the aroma and fairly complex. Pretty tasty. Caramel malt, toffee, wheat, banana, clove, spices, and dark fruit (raisin and date especially).

Medium-full and smooth on the palate with average carbonation for the style. Not boozy at all despite the high ABV.

Overall this is a very good example of the style, not that anyone would expect anything less from AleSmith.

Poured into a wine glass from a capped 750 ml. bottle. Shows a solid brown with deep hazy ruby highlights while sporting a light tan cap. Light retention for the style yet offering a steady cap and some decent lacing.

Nose is robust with dark cherry and brown sugar, bit of yeast and a pleasant alcohol balance. Warms to offer plum and fig along with some milk chocolate and lightly expanding banana yeast notes though never in the bavarian sense.

Dark fruits and malts convey to the flavor. Bready wheat notes are noted here and help give a fullness the the feel. Yet the wheat is subtle given the bounty of fruit and malt complexities, including a good spice quality. A nice level of carbonation hits the tongue even with a lighter than anticipated head on the pour, and continues as a champagne like carbonation over time.

Feel is a bit thin at the get go but improves with warming and exposure and after better mixing. Quite interesting as this beer drinks like a Belgian Strong Dark without the yeast notes as much as a Weizenbock. Very nice but hard to categorize. A unique and interesting brew they say will improve for up to 3 years. Think I might bury one in the closet.

Bottle: Poured a clear dark burgundy color bock with a super large light brown foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of banana bread with caramelized brown sugar notes is simply spectacular. Taste is a perfect mix between some freshly baked banana bread with great note of caramelized sugar and subtle dry fruits. Body is full but has a nice creamy texture which really fits for the style with great carbonation and alcohol is really not apparent. One of the best weizen bock I have tasted and truly a great surprise from a great brewer.

Poured from a 750ml bottle with good foil covering into a wiezen glass. 2009 version obviously and got direct from the brewery so fresh and well handled - thanks Milt & ummagum! Was a very dark brown with dark ruby highlights. Constant streams of carb. It had a massive beige head that slowly settled into a constant thick foam cap fed by the carb. Great sheets of lacing but very little sticking.

The aroma is over-ripe banana, rum, brown sugar, dark fruits and spicy yeast. Good but the alcohol could stand to settle a bit (got one for aging so will see what happens). The taste is also really good but falters a bit compared to some other weizenbocks I had recently that blew me away like the Ayinger. Fruity and spicy but missing an unifying element to bring it all together. The alcohol is a little more subdued than the aroma but could do with a little aging. Mouthfeel is creamy with good carbonation and a dark fruit after-taste.

Overall, a good weizenbock that should improve with some more age on it. Another solid outing from Alesmith. Highly recommend and get a couple so you can try one now and one later. Rotation - not avail here in TX so got from ummagum. One-time anniversary ale. Might get another so couple in cellar.

Review from 3/2011 notes. Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a cloudy dark red-orange amber. Nice thick white head and lacing. Looks nice. Aroma is a strong blend of light fruit, banana, caramel and some phenolic components. A medium bodied creamy ale. Tastes great with dark and light fruit, caramel, light spicing and only a hint of wheat. Very nicely made. A somewhat astringent finish takes away from an otherwise superb bock.

deep dark brown, with nice reddish highlights that circled the bottom and the sides of the glass. Rich head of off white, eggshell color comes up about an inch before settling down and leaving in its wake a nice an well rounded cap of foam and lacing.

Aroma is ripe with dark fruits, chewey caramel and rich toffee notes. Warming brings up even more fruit, dark figs, plums, lots of sweet bready malts and lots of funky flavors coming through now. Butterscotch mixed with a lightly tart fruit note, this was very complex and has held up remarkably well. Smooth, steady carbonation and while not being too light or heavy, it certainly won me over with its well balanced and rich profile.

A - Pours a dark cloudy brown almost black. The head is a light tan that stays around forever. Tons of head retention. The lacing on the glass sticks and doesn't go anytwhere either.

S - Smells of banana dark fruits chocolate

T - Lots of banana, brown sugar, sweet roasted malts, tons of fruit, clove, spice, peach

M - Moderate to moderately high carbonation creamy

D - So flavorful, just about perfect in everyway, redunkelweizenbockulous!

California is filled with some of the worlds best breweries, and I am madly jealous of my friends who live there. It seems like every day there is a new beer, or festival, or event happening in California to celebrate great beer - and the great beers continue to flow. One of my favorite such breweries is AleSmith. We don't get their beers in Ontario, but they are being distributed further across the US all the time.

In 2005 AleSmith celebrated their 10th year brewing beer by creating the Decadence Anniversary Ale. This is a celebratory beer that can be cellared for years, or enjoyed immediately. It comes around every fall, and each year it is a different beer and beer style, but always is decadent. This bottle that I had, and was eagerly excited to try was the 2009 Dunkel Weizenbock. This is a pretty big, and complex beer style - also at 9% abv.

It came in a gold foil covered 750ml wine bottle. Essentially what you get is a combination of rich dark malts, caramel malts, malted wheat, and a German Yeast. This is AleSmith's celebration beer, so should we expect an explosion of flavor here? I think so!

I opened the Decadence cool around 8C (45F) and poured it gently into a tulip glass. The pour was rich and lively showing huge crashing waves of pale cream carbonation rushing through a dark mahogany beer. What built in the glass was a glowing amber brown beer which was menacingly close to black. It shone with deep purples and garnet, and an opaque raisin burning deep in the center. The head was big and powerful; a tall 3 inches above the beer, it showed great retention. The carbonation was tight and perfectly uniform with amazingly spherical bubbles from head to toe. The beer itself was nice, but this magnificently cream colored light tan head really caught my eye.

The nose was richly aromatic with classic Weizenbock flavors. Big rich dark fruit perfumes from the beer bringing raisins, dates, plums, mashed bananas and prunes. Spice lingers the whole time with a richly boozy scent and touches of black pepper, clove, cinnamon and allspice. I get a lot of malt here that comes off powerful.. very powerful. Rich toffee and burnt brown sugar plays a dominant role and bitter chocolate and roast flows in from the sides. This is a beastly beer that smells like 9%.

But now its time to get right into this beer, and in a big way. The first sip was wide and overpowering. A thick rush of sticky, malty brown sugar and stewed plums wash right over my tongue touching baked cherry pie and molasses. All the fruit flavors here come pilling in at once. Plums, raisins, dates, figs, apples and bananas crash right down on your tongue, flow off to your cheeks and then fade into bitter chocolate, roast and a touch of herbal hops.

The overall sensation here is warming with an intriguing balance between rich malt, complex spice, dark bitterness and booze. It is a big beer with big flavors that are actually a bit tough to get through. The alcohol adds a bit of a rough edge to the beer, and leads me to believe that this will improve and mellow with some time in the cellar.

As the beers warms though there is a smooth wave of new sensations coming though with espresso, biscuit, toast and cherries. What helps the beer very much is the soft and elegant mouthfeel that is a touch creamy, and lightly effervescent. It really feels refined. The finish is lightly crisp but largely rich, still. The flavors linger in your palate with a dry, Cab-Sav sort of feeling. Even with the big alcoholic feeling, it is still very drinkable as a slow sipper. Definitely not for the faint of heart, or even newbie beer drinkers. There is a lot in this beer, and it will overwhelm under experienced palates.

If you love rich beers though, and love weizenboocks, this celebratory beer will be a great pleasure. I still think it will be best in 2012, but now I would enjoy it with roast beef, Indian dishes, any chocolate deserts, with a nice maduro cigar, or on its own by the fire.

A- Pours brownish red out of the bottle, settles to a dark murky red/brown with a very light fluffy head

S- Smells of nice dark malts, yeast, a little spice, and some brown sugary notes

T- I get strong tastes of banana and spice. Some nice yeasty flavors as well. A very nice smooth blend on my palate. Dark fruit and belgian yeast.

M- While it starts off great, the mouth falls very flat in the after a second or two. The taste is still somewhat there, but the mouth fades quickly

D- It is pretty strong, but not too noticible. I quickly polished off my first glass before realizing the 9% abv starting to creep up. I'd say it is pretty darn drinkable, but no session beer.

Another very solid offering from Alesmith. Not my favorite Dunkel I've ever had, but worth the 10-11 bucks I paid for it.

Bottle courtesy of BeerWorld in a trade about a year ago.

Pours a semi-translucent brown in color with plenty of ruby red highlights and an average sized soapy khaki colored head that dissipates surprisingly fast.

The aromas begin quite muted but open up dramatically as it warms. A great deal of caramel candied maltiness with lesser amounts of toffee, light milk chocolate and an underlying dark fruitiness highlighted by ripe figs. There is an underlying banana bread yeastiness which is extremely mild and well integrated at this point.

The tastes follow the nose but with a bunch more dark fruitiness. Plenty of dark caramelized malts coupled with light sweet milk chocolate and light candy toffee. Really a ton of raisin fruitiness and caramel candy flavors, but it def not too sweet or anywhere near cloying despite my flavor descriptors. What keep it in balance is the nice lager weizen yeast. It adds a nice dryness and mild spice/clove balance which is awesome.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Finish is initially sweet and yet dry and clean thanks to the weizen yeast characteristics. Really a great balance which is always a plus in my book.

Overall this is the second best Weizenbock I have ever had. It is more malty than the traditional Aventinus example (which is top class for me), but this is a really nice American take on a style which is traditionally too yeasty and not a huge favorite of mine, but this was super. Still drinkable with zero alcohol which is always impressive for a lager of this ABV. Def recommended and absolutely well worth seeking out for fans of AleSmith or fans of the style.

Appearance: Dark and fairly opaque. Has a bit of a reddish hue. Lots of tiny tan bubbles in the head.

Smell: Malty nose, with some dry fruity notes.

Taste: That's a sweet beer. Major malts, with a touch of spice.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, nothing light on the tongue.

Drinkability: This year's Decadence has a real nice even approach. Worth checking out.

Odd and Ends - Great looking bottle. Flat out looks like a special beer.

Pours a very dark brown with a half-finger of an off-white head and some spotty lacing. The nose smells like banana, clove, and too much roasted malt and chocolate for the style. All but the malt is a bit too faint for such a big beer. The taste has quite a bit of stronger malt and not enough yeast character. It's actually pretty plain. Medium body with light carbonation. I don't really have all that much to say about this. As it warms some more sweeter malts and dark fruits come through, but it's still not all that impressive.
