Speedway Stout Variant #3: Mexican Dark Chocolate, Sea Salt and Mexican Coffee is an expertly honed rendition of AleSmith’s original Speedway Stout, which is widely beloved for its chocolate and roasted malts bolstered by notes of dark fruit, toffee and caramel. Despite its intensity, Speedway Stout’s fine carbonation and creamy mouthfeel make it very smooth and surprisingly easy to drink, yielding the perfect canvas for Head Brewer Ryan Crisp and his team of creatives to produce unique blends and variants that exemplify what makes their imperial stout so popular, while incorporating complexities that rev up the tasting experience.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a one finger dark khaki head with good retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, coffee, bakers chocolate and a little vanilla. Flavor is dry, dark toasted malt with a little char, drip coffee, semi-sweet chocolate and a little salt. Coffee and bitter chocolate finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. A solid coffee stout on the dry side of the spectrum. Chocolate tastes like a high cacao bakers or only slightly sweetened chocolate, flavorful, but unlike the cinnamon, lightly sweet Mexican chocolate I'm familiar with. Coffee is somewhat generic, but a clear note. The salt is a distinct component. The base malt leans to a dry stout profile, which is a pleasant alternative to the typically sweet chocolate stouts. Complex and interesting, delivers on its flavor promises. I'm not such a big fan of the salt, not sure if that adds positively to the flavor for me, but makes sense for a dry, rather than sweet stout.

16 ounce can, canned on 07/26/21. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch or so tan head that stuck around a while. There's also a good amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, sea salt and some dark fruit. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also the addition of some cinnamon, earthy, burnt/charred malt, dark bready and a bit of anise flavors. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's a bit slick and creamy with a moderate amount of carbonation. Didn't get to try this one really fresher since I bought this about a month ago. Still tastes pretty good with some age on it, I'd buy this again!

Type: 16-oz. can

Glass: Pure Project 16-oz. snifter glass
Price: $4.99

Picked this one up right when I saw it. Sounded delicious. AleSmith’s website called this beer “For this special edition of our signature imperial stout we were inspired to feature ingredients from our neighbors to the south. We used the comforting trio of Mexican dark chocolate, sea salt, and Mexican coffee to give the beer delectable notes of cacao and dark fruit, a subtle touch of cinnamon, and a kiss of roasty earthiness.”

Poured a pitch-black color with 2-to-3 fingers of khaki-tan frothy head. Could see lots of bubble streams coming up along the sides of the glass. World-class uneven foamy lacing. World-class foamy retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled cacao, roasted black coffee, vanilla, dark milk chocolate, caramel, sea salt, black pepper, anise, bark, black licorice and candied marshmallow. A smidgeon better out of the can. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted even better than the nose. In order got cacao, roasted black coffee, bitter dark chocolate, cinnamon, black pepper, anise, bark, hints of black licorice, vanilla, salt, caramel, wood, toasted nuts and candied marshmallow. (Taste - 4.25)

Full body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, spicy, warming finish. (Feel - 4.75)

Just an awesome variant. Glad I had one and will be looking for more. (Overall - 4.25)

This is my last and final can of this... I saw that it had some pedestrian scores across the Internet and wondered why, since I happened to enjoy it a lot. Now it's time to put that to the test and finally review it.

First off, it pours black with a creamy, khaki head. I happened to get a large head this time that I don't remember from earlier pours, which might just be from digging out the old stout glass. The head fades into a thin ring with some lacing. The smell is not strong, which could be from its age. I still think I get some bits of malty chocolate and salt. The taste is the star, though - bitter chocolate with a kick of salt. The coffee is more subtle but chocolate and coffee are two of the greatest things ever created and are superstars together. With repeated sips, you can really get the coffee undercurrent. It hits harder than you first expect. I don't even like bitter things that much and I love this. Malty and dry, mid-full body and moderately carbonated. It is a bit warming at the end.

Pouring one out for your AL Central champs the Cleveland Guardians and also still wishing I had a chance to try the other Speedway variants.

16oz can poured into a tulip

A- pours a thick jet black with a one-finger creamy khaki head that has good retention

S- smells of peppery coffee with a bit of a green pepper note, cinnamon, chocolate, caramel, roast, char and licorice

T- herbal and peppery coffee up front follows the nose, followed by a bold chocolate note. Mid-palate gives some cinnamon, along with that signature Speedway charred malt. The finish gives more coffee and a hint of vanilla. Lingers of dark fruit, chocolate and coffee

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into a velvety, slightly warming finish

Very dark body with a modest tan head. Pleasant aroma of da ark chocolate, coffee & roast grain. Nicely balanced between bitter, salty & sweet. Flavors are pretty much as advertised: chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, dark fruits & toffee. Medium viscosity with a smooth feel. The 12% is well hidden. Very drinkable, more like a coffee than a beer. Excellent!

16oz can. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a small, khaki-colored head of foam. It left sudsy trails of lace on the glass. It smelled of dark chocolate, saltiness, roasted coffee and toffee. Great spicy taste with chocolate, toffee, roasted coffee and some saltiness.

Surprised I found this in Ohio, it was definitly good and I don't mind the price on this one, pretty affordable. Tastes were just too subtle to me but not bad.

I guess that's my issue with the OG as well. Just not enough.

Inky black pour, enjoyable aromas and flavors of coffee abound, pretty rich and creamy, minor impressions of cacao nibs or bakers chocolate and the faintest impression of salinity. Mildly warming but overall solid and enjoyable.

Creamy and viscous, ample billowing mocha foam, a halo of lacing.
Aromas of brownie crust, dark roast coffee, tiny bit of milk chocolate sweetness.
Rich creamy chocolate and coffee, bitter earthy roast, warming finish.
Medium bodied and fudgy, dry finish, mild lingering bitterness.
No perceptible salt.

Overall it’s very tasty and well integrated, very creamy and smooth.
