Every year we anxiously await the warmer months to unleash this Double IPA, the summer edition of our former YuleSmith seasonals. AleSmith's Double IPA is perfect for the warmer months of summer. Flavor is of orange, grapefruit, and tangerine with some resinous pine. Solid malt backbone balances out hops resulting in a very refreshing beer.

One of the better beers I have had in a while. The beer has a very nice aroma and a taste that follows the aroma and keeps one very satisfied. An above average beer definitely worth seeking out.

*taken from notes
12oz bottled on May 9 2017 2558 poured heavily into my hotel's clear plastic cup.

Appearance- hazy golden/ straw color with a frothy white head. leaves good amount of lacing.

Aroma- oranges and tangerines.

Flavor- like the smell but with some caramel notes to add depth. bitterness to some could be kinda sharp. abv is well hidden. really dry finish.

Mouthfeel- solid medium bodied. good carbonation

Drinkability- easily drinkable for any hophead.

Overall- the orange and tangerine hop notes are the main thing in this beer. if you like ipa's and orange flavored things this is a must try for you. there is some sort of spiciness coming from this brew. don't know if it's from the hops or carbonation. as it warms pine notes start to come through. really solid.

On tap:
Little disappointed in this one, but I'm willing to give it another try.

Poured darker than expected, a dark amber nearing a light brown ale color. Would've gone closer to 3 or under but the beer is fairly clear and the head is impressively lasting and lacing.

Nose seems to have orange zest and some classic pith and pine. It's not very strong on this pour.

Taste starts pretty clean, and there's a light toasted whole grain and honey opening. A nice orange comes next, but as that hits, a subtle piney bitterness wells up from the bottom of the taste. It takes a while to displace the opening notes, but does eventually hold the back. There seems to be a slight oxidation in there, which could be mis-handling, though it's a respected beer bar.

This pour reminded me a little of 90 Minute, though it's pine sap bitterness is a bit stronger than I recall the comparison beer. Really want to get a known relatively fresh version for a revisit.

Oh yeah, it's a bottle, but one that I could hardly resist. I mean, c'mon, a summer seasonal DIPA?!? From San Dog? Yeah, I'll take that hit.

From the bottle: "Limited Edition Seasonal"; "ale brewed with an abundance of hops"; "Every year, we anxiously await the sunny season to unleash AleSmith Double IPA, originally known as 'AleSmith Summer YuleSmith'. Its flavor imparts orange, grapefruit, and tangerine hop notes with earthy, spicy, and resinous pine undertones. A sturdy malt backbone balances out a profound hop bitterness to create a refreshingly assertive and vibrant beer that offers a bold expression of fresh American hops. This IPA's citrusy aroma pairs well with many Mexican and Thai dishes, while its bitterness complements the sweetness of rich pork dishes like BLTs or spare ribs. Brawny, intensely flavored cheeses like Danish blues and aged Cheddars are also effective foils to the aggressive flavor profile of this Imperial IPA."; "Drink Fresh in a Pint or Tulip at 45 - 50 [deg.]"

I Pop!ped the cap & began a slow, gentle pour as I am wont to do. Even this gentility produced three-plus fingers of dense, rocky, foamy, tawny head with excellent retention. Color was solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. The nose had a sweet citrusy fruitiness of orange & tangerine & my mouth began to water. I thought more strongly of Orange Marmalade than anything else. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, big in its presence, but not as full as some that I have had in the style. The taste was primarily citrus, mostly orange & tangerine with a light grapefruit bitterness, followed by a minty, cooling wash of pine. OMFG! How did they pull this off? No matter. It was quite tasty and I will have to look for it every summer. In the interim, it finished with a cool, minty dryness that lingered well past the swallow.

Yup, this sure is a great DAIPA. It has it all going on.

It is quite impressive in the glass. Yellow with nice fine foam. Tons of lacing. The aroma is full, hoppy, slightly floral. Excellent smell. A dab behind each ear seems in order.

The taste is syrupy and hoppy. A lovely mess with a thick, lingering aftertaste. This double IPA deserves all the accolades.

Very highly recommended.

Outstanding, especially when fresh. Aromas of citrus and pine. Flavors of grapefruit, lime, caramel, pineapple (older batch)... Newer batches are more citrusy.

I don't like the deep toastiness of one of the grains used in the grist here. Otherwise, it's mainly basic 2-row.

Super dry, translucent and high in carbonation. Two or three of these are nice and quenching, yet tasty on a hot Summer day. Buy even when not fresh, though $16.99 a sixer is a bit ridiculous.
