Brewed by:
AleSmith Brewing Company
California, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Also known as YuleSmith (Summer)

Every year we anxiously await the warmer months to unleash this Double IPA, the summer edition of our former YuleSmith seasonals. The flavor imparts orange, grapefruit, and tangerine hop notes with earthy, spicy, and resinous pine undertones. A sturdy malt backbone balances out the profound hop bitterness to create a refreshingly assertive and vibrant beer that offers an unapologetically bold expression of fresh American hops.

L: murky bronze.

S: Malts. Some orange peel. Something approximating cinnamon. Did I mention malts? There's also an undercurrent of malts.

T: get some of that orange, but basically drinking honeyed malts here. Some hints of citrus, but muddied in sweetness.

F: trends towards syrupy. Slightly over carbonated.

O: overpriced, exhausting to drink, and one note. A for avoid.

Bottled on 4/28/16. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours golden with a subtle haze; fluffy white head that sticks around leaving thick retention and very sticky lacing. Looks great. The aromas have a nice amount of citrus. Lots of orange. Slightly floral. Malts are definitely present. The flavors basically follow the nose. More orange, which seems to dominate. Lots of pine, especially in the finish. Some subtle spicy notes in the finish as well. Fresh grass is in the mix. More floral notes. Solid malt backbone. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is nice. It's full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's very creamy and fluffy. Smooth and easy to drink.

This is a solid DIPA. It might've been better if we received it a bit fresher. Either way, it's not my new personal favorite AleSmith hoppy brew, and I love their hoppy stuff. It's not bad at all though. It's still nice and enjoyable stuff.

There is a bottled on date but it is rubbed off to the point where I can't read it.

Appearance: Slightly hazy burnished gold colored body. The head is a very large fluffy white cap that stands for a long time. Watch out for the carbonation on this one when you pour as the head develops quickly with a careful pour.

Aroma: It has a lovely sweet tangerine aroma. The aroma doesn't remind me of fresh hops or anything but the aroma is still very fresh smelling. Also it isn't loaded with diverse aroma but this one trick pony smells great. It smells so good it makes me want to smell it more.

Taste: That tangerine aroma doesn't really make it into the flavor of the beer. There is a bit of sweet malty flavor and a good deal of alcohol mixed in with that. The hop flavor is a bit grassy. Lots of bitter grapefruit rind without the grapefruit flavor.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied beer that is dominated by a strong back-bitterness. It has a pretty muddy finish.

Overall: The beer smelled fantastic; I don't know where they were going with the flavor though. If it tasted as good as it smelled...oh man. I guess where the beer lost me was in the grassy flavor mixed with the malt. It just didn't taste great. The mouthfeel wasn't all that great either. It just didn't finish well.

Pours a clear orange body with one-finger head that left minor lace ring and patches down the glass. Has a sharp, citric aroma with notes of pine, earth, grapefruit and caramel malt. Balanced beer that has notes of citric, earth, pine, oil along with grapefruit and caramel malt sweetness. Eventually finishes crisp and easy and is a quite enjoyable DIPA.

Pale honey with an inch of dense foam

Grassy, piney, acidic citrus in the nose

Nice level of astringent bitterness...spice and citrus really shine, with the foresty finish

Light malt...not sweet, not boozy. Really hangs out on the tip of your tongue.

Excellent example of a traditional west coast DIPA.

12 ounce bottle poured into tulip

A: Pours a clear golden orange with a bright white creamy full head, lots of lacing, good amount of carbonation, good head retention, looks solid.

A: Lots of citrus notes like grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, spicy earthiness, touch of pine, alcohol is well hidden.

T: Like the nose, a mix of sweet and bitter citrus flavors, resin and pine with spicy earthiness, hit of bitterness with more grapefruit notes emerging and lingering in the aftertaste, deceptive with its drinkability but my palate knows its drinking an IIPA as the grapefruit notes linger, alcohol is well hidden.

M: Medium bodied with a very dry finish, low carbonation, leaves that dry citrus peel feeling on the palate.

O: Very deceptive, really easy drinking but the dry citrus peel finish leaves my palate feeling raked, overall very tasty and would definitely buy again.

Very thick head, most impressive! Smells hoppy. I'm not a fan of IPS's so I really didn't enjoy this one. If you you like the bitter hoppy flavor you'll love this. This is the summer edition, I wonder what that winter edition tastes like. Still, I'm impressed with that lush thick head.

Pretty decent DIPA, but didn't blow me away. Given I drank this one with about 2 months of age on it. It was stuck in the back of the fridge so I didn't get to experience all the hoppiness. Overall it was still very good, just a little more bitter on the finish than I prefer.

Pours two fingers of head on a hazy straw body.
The aroma is bright with tropical fruits: pineapple and mango.
The taste is moderate to strong bitterness right off the bat, then mellows to the end. A little sweet finish.
The texture is thicker.
Quite enjoyable.

Rich, complex....sipping ale, great balance of malt and hops. A wonderful fruity hop flavor sitting four square on top of a rich malt base. Enjoy this on its own terms, perhaps with a grilled steak and frites but nothing less.

Bomber > SA Sensory Pint
A - Cloudy gold orange with two and a half fingers of thick dense off-white foamy head with some really thick lacing.
S - Really nice aroma, passionfruit, papaya, orange, a little banana, then there's some grassy dankness, hop resin.
T - Bold hop profile, sweet candy like malt come in mid way with some candied fruit, lots of big sticky dank hop flavor, sweet orange and tangerine, papaya, grapefruit, lime, pine, some dark earthy hop undertones in the end, slight alcohol taste lingering.
M - Big feel to this beer, some alcohol burn along with a huge piney bitterness. Chewy and sticky.
O - Really good IPA, a bit too overbearing in some areas, but worth having for sure.

Delicious DIPA. Large Wine Glass. Great nose: hints of tangerine, grapefruit and pine.
Creamy head with a medium body that's just right for summer.
Just love the flavors of tangerine, grapefruit, pine and some pepper. This is one of my favorites, right now and can't pass it up even at $8 a bomber.

Pours a slightly cloudy light amber, slightly darker than gold. World class head volume, lacing and retention.

Outstanding nose of citrus (tangerine, orange, light grapefruit) over a rich biscuit base. Underneath, is a tantalizing hint of spicy spruce.

Heavy light body with a fairly smooth texture. Superbly carbonated with a bit of effervescence in the middle and a rollicking fine effervescent prickly finish.

The outstanding flavor profile is almost world class. It begins with the citric flavors of the nose, but with more grapefruit rind present. The rind flows into spruce in the middle over a rising malt influence. A mild bitterness kicks in and the malts assume the forefront with a rich grainy biscuit sweetness. Surprisingly, caramel notes are present at a much higher level than the color would suggest. The finish delivers the expected alcohol burn at the back of the throat, but also allows the alcohol content to escape it's previous flavor masking. A rind and pine like bitterness lingers along with the alcohol astringency.

Hay color, hazy but not completely like those east coast ipa/dipa's. Picking up slight tropical notes on the smell, but they're quite muted. Bold bitterness but well rounded with the sweetness of malt. I definitely recommend for dipa fans. Cheers

Golden with good clarity and a creamy head. Balanced pine and citrus in both aroma and taste. A bit of sweetness takes the edge off the bitterness in the finish. Solid DIPA.

Top class DIPA. This is very well balanced with a floral, spicy hop profile that is really pronounced, very noticeable. Makes this one that I will remember, and wish I bought more of despite the $10 price tag for a bomber. The malt stickiness/slight sweetness pairs so well with the hops in this. I really enjoyed this beer and would highly recommend it.

Supremely well made beer, provided you like big alcohol malt and hop notes. I definitely do. This is a big beer but comes across with a lot more body, heat and complexity than it's 8.5 abv suggests. Bitterness and malt complexity balance incredibly well, and such a lot of both. Under the mandarin/ pine/ grapefruit/ tropical fruit hop characters, there's a floral, spicy flavor that wonderfully connects to the toffee and caramel sweet malt. Masterful.

Pours a blond copper color. Couple inches of head that is white and rocky. Leaves lacing as it dissipates. Has a hoppy front then a touch of sweet that falls into a slight bitter on the backend.

Pours a nice orange color with a pretty full and fluffy white head. Pretty hazy and slightly opaque. Lots of lace and bubble cloying to the side of the glass.

Smell is a good mix of malt, citrus, and pine. Definite hints of grapefruit and spruce here. Very well balanced and inviting.

Taste is dominated by hops and bitterness--in a very good way. There is a very nice malt backbone to go along with those citrusy, piney, biting hop essences. The bit of alcohol sting that is paired with bitter hops also is noted by a bit of a ringing sting in the mouth. Again, this is done well and comes across as inviting to this hop-headed, big-beer guy. Very full bodied and flavorful.

Moderate carbonation, full body, and a real biting presence define the mouthfeel of this beer.

Overall, this is a damn impressive and tasty D.I.P.A. The overall flavor profile and balanced nature of the beer--especially hard to pull off in a 100-plus IBU brew--is just so skillfully and well done that it makes me marvel at AleSmith's accomplished approach to brewing. This is a beer to savor--summer, winter, fall, or would hardly matter.
