Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Also known as YuleSmith (Summer)

Every year we anxiously await the warmer months to unleash this Double IPA, the summer edition of our former YuleSmith seasonals. The flavor imparts orange, grapefruit, and tangerine hop notes with earthy, spicy, and resinous pine undertones. A sturdy malt backbone balances out the profound hop bitterness to create a refreshingly assertive and vibrant beer that offers an unapologetically bold expression of fresh American hops.

This beer pours a pale orange with a medium sized head. The aroma is dominated by citrus, mostly grapefruit with some tangerine. There is also a touch of pineapple and caramel. The flavor starts with very rich caramel, followed by citrus, orange, grapefruit, tangerine. There is some pine mid palate, but just a bunch more citrus on the swallow. The mouthfeel is very full and rich, with a huge, sudsy amount of carbonation. Overall while the hop profile is nice, the sweetness is a bit too much for me.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter. Golden clear yellow, beige head and nice lacing. Very citrusy smell with some floral notes. Taste is strong citrus with grapefruit, orange, pine. A hint of bitterness. Very good!

L: Hazy (practically opaque) pumpkin with fine and lasting lacing.
S: Earthy orange juice. Kind of musty.
T: Very bitter with deeply resinous pine and orange rind with a hint of nectar sweetness. No malt presence to speak of.
F: Super rich and creamy. This is like hop oil soup.
O: I was underwhelmed for the first several sips. It lets you know that it's an old school DIPA right up front. Reminds me a lot of the original Ruination or Nugget Nectar, but a lot more refined and "jammy," to borrow the wine term. Once my palate adjusted to the shock, I settled in and found a whole lot to like.

Paid the premium on this 5 bucks. Good looking presentation and slightly bitter hop smelling goodness. Taste is what I expected a touch malty but it still has a similar hop bite compared to the regular IPA. Smooth with no lingering alcohol esters so goodness!

Overall pretty stellar DIPA one I would love to try again.

Pours a hazy light golden yellow with a thin off white head. Minor lacing. Smells of bready malts and citrusy hops. Tastes is hop forward citrus/pine with light bready maltiness. Finishes bitter. A well done double worth trying.

Has this one at the brewery itself, great full hop aroma dank and Citrus. Went down quite easily and wasn't overly bitter. Good balance between bitter and sweetness.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Amber colored with a good haze. Off white head retains very well. Chunky lacing.

S: Green, oily, cut grass, lemony. Prange and tangerine. Sturdy dough and caramel malt base.

T: Freshly cut grass. Oily and green. Earthy flavors of pine, bark, and resin. Lots of tangerine. Grapefruit too. Bitterness builds slowly and gradually, becoming firm and somewhat imposing on the back end. Hops go spicy toward the back too. Malt body is substantial, bringing a fat caramel and toast flavor that balances nicely while letting the hops do their thing. Bitter, oily, and spicy hop finish.

M: Medium-thick. Fat and round with a sense of malty weight that presses in gently. Brisk carbonation prickles at the tongue. Hop astringency grips at the teeth.

O: An old school American double IPA. Big, bold, and well balanced despite a hop-dominated punch. Pretty much the quintessential West Coast double IPA.
