Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This Vietnamese coffee version of Speedway Stout is and continues to be AleSmith's most popular variation of the ever-growing Speedway Stout collection. Since 2012 we have been adding this blend of four Vietnamese coffees, known in Vietnam as cà phê sa đá, to our popular imperial stout. The coffee beans were slowly roasted at low temperatures and then brewed by AleSmith with a traditional phin-style filter that gently percolates water through the ground coffee. The result is an intensely aromatic and bold tasting coffee that complements the notes of chocolate and roast in this massive stout.

Draught pour at Davis Beer Shoppe into a snifter. Pours a brownish black with a thin layer of cream-colored head that mostly, but never fully, dissipates. Nose is roasty deliciousness, with hints of dark chocolate and some booziness as it warmed. Taste is heavier on the chocolate than the nose, plenty of roasted coffee. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, carbonation fine, and the finish slightly bitter and hot from the ABV. Tasty brew indeed, but I like the Hammerhead slightly better.

good golly i have wanted to try this beer for a long time, and to finally get the chance is pretty incredible. amazing to have it on tap too. it pours significantly more brown than i remember the base beer being. it really isnt all that dark. nice head on it, and some general and expected cloudiness. its less intense and thick looking than the barrel aged version, and i am excited to sip it. the nose is more chocolate than coffee, which i find surprising, its not that its coffee profile is weak, its that the chocolate malt and roast and earthy bits are very forward in the aroma, and its real inviting. from the first taste it seems the vietnamese coffee is real different than the cali stuff. coarsely ground and dark, bitter, and bringing out the best of the very dark malt. more concentrated than others, but with the chocolate, it seems sweet and delectable and approachable for how strong it is. the alcohol is super well hidden, and it just never seems all that heavy. i suppose its not that different in the coffee aspect as i hoped it would be, but its very distinct beer, a key beer in the style, memorable and as good as any of its variants. it really doesnt need a barrel...

1/3rd of a Pint in Brewdog DogHouse Glasgow (£5.45):
Not a beer that disappointed at all, it was strong & dark with coffee & vanilla balanced well. It was silky smooth & went down easy for the strength whilst still having a nice kick to it. Full bodied & filling but very enjoyable; I'm looking forward to trying the original even more now.
