Avast! This version of Old Numbskull, our classic American Barleywine Ale, is matured in premium rum barrels for an extended period of time to develop its rich and intense flavor profile. The result is an amazingly complex beer that balances the caramel and toasted malt character with notes of woody spice and sweet molasses from the barrel aging process.

8600th review! 750 ml bottle into snifter, 2017 vintage. Pours fairly hazy dark ruby red, light orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, cherry, date, peach, apricot, orange, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, pear, red apple, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, agave, rum, toasted oak, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread/crust, and biscuit; with lighter notes of oaken vanilla, toffee, molasses, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Slight booze in the aromas as it warms, but not overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity yeast, citrus/earthy hops, rum barrels, and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, fig, cherry, date, peach, apricot, orange, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, pear, red apple, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, agave, rum, toasted oak, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread/crust, and biscuit; with lighter notes of oaken vanilla, toffee, molasses, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness; and rum/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark fruit, cherry, peach, apricot, orange, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, pear, red apple, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, agave, rum, toasted oak, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread/crust, biscuit, light toffee/molasses, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, citrus/earthy hops, rum barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness, and rum/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness, and rum/oak spiciness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/sticky/tannic, and fairly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Mild increasing warmth of 12%, with minimal lingering barrel booze after the finish. Overall this is fantastic barrel aged American barleywine. All arounf fantastic omplexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, citrus/earthy hops, rum barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the huge ABV, with the mellowly bitter/resinous/tannic/drying finish; not overly aggressive. Perfect balance between citrusy/earthy C hops, fruity yeast, and Rum barrel presence/integration; with a nice sized balancing dark/bready malt backbone. Light residual sweetness with lingering bitter/tannic dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected. Not as impressive as the base beer, but it's not as boozy on the rum as I expected. Aged really well.

Souring. Fizziness impacted appearance and body. It's a shame as what was going on underneath the souring was promising. Rum raison, muscovado, big vanilla and oak. Hopefully there's a do over but I don't blame them if they avoid it.
