12oz bottle poured into a snifter. AleSmith Nut Brown Ale is a solid malty brown ale that is flavorful and highly drinkable beer that is very sessionable.

Pour is a very dark brown almost black in color with tan foamy head and decent lacing. Smells of roasted coffee, nuts, and some chocolate. Taste is a mix of bitter chocolate, nuttiness, molasses, and some coffee. The finish is good, very smooth and easy drinking beer. Flavors are a nice blend leaving you with wanting another sip. Really enjoyed this beer.

Poured from 22oz bottle into Chimay goblet

L-Deep copper brown pour with sandy head. Decent retention.

S-Fruits and nuts, roasted barley

T-Sweet almond, hazelnut, chocolate, roasted malts

F-Thin, but the flavors stick with you. Smooth with a slightly stinging carbonation.

Complex without being heavy. A well balanced brown ale.

Pours a nice mahogany with minimal, quick-disappeared tan head. Aroma is amazing, fully realizing the nut component with hazelnuts dominating a malty roast. Flavor is similar though there's a weakness and slight acidity. Finish is somewhat dry.

EDIT: On second try with clean palate, the flavor matches my aroma description. Great stuff - maybe my new favorite of the style.

Basically the polar opposite of their Speedway Stout, in my opinion. That beer is an absolute monster in every sense, and as a stout/porter devotee it was probably a mistake for me to have the Nut Brown while the Speedway was still fresh in my memory. I found this beer very bland and nondescript in every sense, and inferior to the Samuel Smith Nut Brown, or any number imperial nut browns such as Tommyknocker or Nut Sack.

Got a six-pack of bottles, tried them both poured into a glass and straight from the bottle. Brown beer with thin white head that vanishes fast, aroma and taste or both roasted malts all over with little discernible nut taste, and a bitter metallic quality. Light body and carbonation, not very much going on.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle filled 06-07-2016. Sampled on Aug. 27, 2016.

The pour is an attractive looking mahogany brown with reddish hues under a modes, short-lived head.

Very sweet aroma of roasted malts, caramel, nuts, but a low to no hop profile.

Medium body that is also a little acidic and carbonated.

The taste brings out the sweet roasted caramel malts along with the nuttiness of a good brown ale. The hop finish is earthy and quick but still low profile. I have always enjoyed the style and this one fits into the style very well.

Pours a deep, dark mahogany brown color with a 2-finger caramel head. The head dissipates quickly before settling into a nice golden ring around the top of the beer. Leaves plenty of cobweb lacing along the way.

The aroma brings notes of chocolate, hazelnut, and a touch of fresh coffee beans. Slightly toasted with minimal bitterness.

The taste follows the nose: Tons of milk chocolate, hazelnut, and coffee, followed by some roasted almonds and baked bread. There's a subtle caramel note as well. On the sweeter side for sure, but not overly so.

The feel is medium-light bodied with lighter carbonation. Incredibly smooth and creamy.

Overall, a damn good brown ale that packs a ton of flavor and drinks heavier than the relatively light mouthfeel would lead on. Just a lovely beer.

12oz bottle into a pint glass. bottled 2/11/16, so 6 months old.

amber brown body with a small fizzy head which dissipates, but resumes upon agitation. some lacing, also fine particulates.

malty, slightly nutty, some dried fruit on the nose.

A solid English brown ale taste, slightly nutty, no unpleasant aftertaste.

mouth is a little above medium.

overall, a good English Brown Ale

Poured into a pint glass at 47 degrees. A: A one finger light tan head with poor retention. The color of the beer is dark reddish brown and is opaque.

N: A nice nutty aroma with some coffee and subtle chocolate notes with yeast, bread, and some subtle fruity notes.

T: A very nice nutty flavor with a hint of coffee and light chocolate notes, with some yeast, and toasted crackers, caramel, and fruity esters.

M: A medium carbonation with a medium body.

O: A very nice Nut brown good flavors, and was well rounded. Solid brew to drink.

I make a beer very similar to this with Amber malt. I drank this at the brewery itself. It was nice, I prefer these types of beers in the cold Canadian winters I have to endure!

Modest finger plus head of deep tan color, slightly irregular surface throughout, okay retention, has long, skinny streaks of lacing. Clear, if not quite transparent, brown hue with a yellow cast, you barely see the bubbles until the spread out before breaking the surface. Melted milk chocolate pours into your nostrils, caramel and coconut too, hazelnut, cola, raisin to fig fruit, seems like it might get bready but really the chocolate dominates so much that it probably never had a chance. Medium-bodied and closer to light than heavy, surprising given the richness of the nose, strong carbonation helps it lift off the palate. Nicely done that as fresh as it seems overall, the determinant factor remains the malty caramel, chocolate, toffee flavors. As it progresses in the mouth there is a mineral water component and very light charcoal to tar element which boosts the freshness further, almost salty too. The fruit stays in the fig, golden raisin to grape range, nothing sweeter or more concentrated. Any nuttiness most present retronasally at the end. For this imbiber this is a difficult category to make a favorable impression and this manages to hit most of the right notes.

5% ABV. 17 IBU, OG=1.054. 22oz bomber at Binnys in Chicago. No ingredients per the bottle or website. Pours out to a clear deep mahogany, forming a modest yellow head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of black walnut, toasted walnuts, a little cocoa, not a ton of "english" esters, which is good, IMO.The mouthfeel is a little acidic with a medium body. The taste is quite nice, good walnut and nut flavors, followed by a slight touch of roast, then a nice earthy bitterness, and leather in the finish. No off aromas or flavors or any appreciable faults.

Brown ales are one of my least favorite styles, but this one is quite nice, I only wish it wasn't quite so acidic and had just a few more points of residual sweetness to even out the body and the taste. Still, one of the best brown ales I've had. Recommended.

Appearance: A bubble show reveals a translucent tea brown liquid capped by a rapidly fading tan head; a few dots a lace hang around

Smell: Brown bread, caramel and assorted nuts

Taste: Brown bread and caramel forward, with the nut flavors adding another dimension in the middle; a bit of the typical metallic finish I often detect in brown ales but the other flavors make up for it

Mouthfeel: Medium body with low to moderate carbonation

Overall: I don't often drink brown ales but this is a nice diversion from my usual selection

Bomber to tulip glass.
Look: dark brown, some sediment, big, big creamy white head. Looks beautiful. Head lasts.
Aroma: chestnut, hazelnut, malt, bread, wine, touch of yeast, raisin.
Taste: bread, barley, cereal, a bit more flavor would make this phenomenal.(barrel age?)
Feel: light and airy, but also creamy. Medium carbonation.

One of the better Brown ales I've had. Could use a bit more flavor, but it is still tasty. We'll see how it stacks up in the upcoming Brown ale tasting.

(12 oz bottle , date is blurry 03/02/16?... poured into a nonic)

L: pretty darn clear chestnut brown liquid, bit of sediment appeared to sneak in at the end of the pour... doesn't put up much foam, leaves a messy, spitty collar

S: hint of coffee, maybe a nip of brown sugar... chocolate malt aroma is very well-defined, smells like fresh product, pre-brew... certainly nutty... maybe a delicate whiff of grassy, leafy hop, but overall very little hop presence intruding in what's an altogether grist-y (American) malt smell

T: very grainy-malty - if you like chewing on your homebrew grains, that's what this tastes like... lightly-sweetened roasty coffee in a relatively dry finish... bitterness creeps up... the degree of dryness in the finish is what stands out to me... a light dusting of cocoa and spoonful of nutty yeast sprinkled in there, but this is predominantly naked grass nuts

F: light-medium bodied, little bit of oily viscosity, delicately powdery outflow, minimally acidic on the back end... quite drinkable - a bit stiff, but finishes clean and is fairly moreish

O: they can get away calling this an English brown simply because it's not hoppy - the malt flavors taste pretty domestic to me, and nothing in the ester profile seems unique or 'English'... this is the same standard brown that's brewed in countless brewpubs and homebrew competitions around the country, just without pungent pine or citrus... I've brewed a brown as good and occasionally better than this... at least add some interesting dark invert sugars or a large portion of a unique character malt, otherwise why push this on the east coast?

It pours a dark brown with the aroma of malts and chocolate. The flavor is sweetness of chocolate with a bit of dryness on the backend. Overall a excellent drink but to me more of a stout than a brown ale, still one of the better beers I have had lately.

The beer pours out into a Duvel galss a clear dark brown with some reddish highlights and a 1/2” light tan head that soon begins to recede to a thin cover. Sipping creates lots of scattered small patches and legs of lacing.

The aromas include roasted malt and some roasted nut character along with something that seems a lot like dark caramel.

The flavors pretty much follow the nose with some roasted nuts and malt sowing up. In addition there is some chocolate or dark caramel in here as well. What sweetness is here is very controlled and well integrated with the other flavors so that refreshes and does not cloy. The bitterness that does show up also restrained and is part of the a complete package.

The mouth feel is medium bodied and smoothly with light persistent carbonation. The finish begins as the malt and nut flavors begin to recede laving a nice gentle almost roasted bitterness towards the back of the palate.

Overall this is well brewed beer and an excellent example of an English Brown Ale. Its very drinkable and I’ll definitely be looking to have it again. Nice to know a trip to the UK isn't needed to find one of these.

I poured this from a bottle into a clear teardrop glass. It pours a dark brown with a one finger white head. The taste is very good but doesn't stand up to me favorite brown ale: Samuel Smith.

Tough to compete against the flagship of this style which IMHO is Samuel Smith's Nut Brown. That being said, this is still a solid beer. Toffee and raisin notes in the flavor. A little harsher hop wise than SS. Still, it is pretty easy to get down. I would appreciate a little more "chewiness" to the mouthfeel. Right now, it is pretty watery, with little aftertaste.

Taste: Very smooth mouthfeel in the front. Brown bread, raisins, roasted malts, figs, toffee notes in the tail end.

Notes: A very tasty English style brown ale and very drinkable. Cheers.

Draft pour to nonic. No head and brown color. Malt and toffee nose. Taste adds a touch of hop bitterness and some caramel to the profile. If there is a nut in there I'm not sure which. Above average body and below average carbonation.

Pours deep brown with some red highlights. Aroma is nutty and malty, no hops. Taste is also nutty, some dark fruits and very mild hops. Very nice brown ale, a forgotten style.

I purchased this bottle from Grain + Verse enjoyed chilled in a stout glass

The color is cocoa brown with thick pale tan head with fine bead and good retention. The smell has a moderately roasted nutty aroma which has a slight sweet scent. The feel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation toasted texture with mostly dry finish.

The taste is very good with a nice roast level with subtle sweetness and light yeast with relatively low bitterness in the flavor with slight creamy and toasted malt quality with very mild hop with slight herbal element. This is a great beer -it is nice to have since when Craft beer 1st started becoming popular the brown style was more available but now that IPA's have usurped the market this is one of the few. I recommend this to anyone since it is a great example of the style
