New to the Aldi lineup.* Hadn't noticed that they'd re-stocked because the six-packs ($6) are nearly identical to the Pilsner.

Best by July 28, 2017. Poured into my short Becher glass.

L -- Inky dark with ruby highlights via a flashlight. Thick and dense, light tan head that holds up well.

S -- Hints of roasted and sweet malts, neither overpowering.

T -- Smooth bread crust character up front followed by equally smooth roasted malt; not harsh or bitter. Finishes with a lightly floral and spicy hop character with a malty sweetness balancing with the roasted malt.

F -- Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a dry, crisp finish. Body is medium-robust -- even at 4.9%.

O -- Quite the nice Schwarz. Because I'm familiar with the Wernesgrüner Pilsner's flavor, I half expected this to be a darkened up version (even food-colored) of that beer, but it's definitely its own style and a great example.

*Interesting that this beer isn't listed at the Wernesgrüner web site -- they need to promote it.

Look: clear medium dark brown. Modest tan head on the pour.
Smell: light roasty malt. Not much going on but pleasant enough.
Taste: much like the nose. Nothing great here but a decent brew.

Pours a clear, brown with ruby red highlights. Initially a large, fluffy tan head that dissipates quickly.
A big, roasty nose with the hop bite in the end.
Taste follows the nose quite well. Good roast up front, switching to a sweeter licorice and German hop finish. Nuttiness sweeps by in the finish.
Finishes crisp.
I enjoyed the pilsner as well.

From the bottle, it pours a reddish brown with a light tan head that diminishes to a quarter inch thick and hangs around. In the nose, it is caramel malt and roast malt. In the mouth, the same, although a bit thin, body wise..

Appearance
Pours to a rocky beige head that lasts and laces well.

Aroma
Dark breads, slight smell of roasted nuts, molasses and toasted malts, medium Saazer type hops.

Flavor
Clean, dry, mostly Pils malts with a hint of dark chocolate and roasted pecans. Soft noble bitterness and a nice noble hop backdrop in the finish.

Mouthfeel
Solid medium body, appropriate carbonation for style and acceptable amount of astringency--think "pecans"

Overall
Another tasty 6 dollar ALDI bargain brew from a traditional Saxony brewery. They did a fine job on this one. And the price, it takes me back to 1995!

Poured into a jar from a pint can.

A- Black Coca-Cola color, along with dark ruby red highlights; slightly translucent when held to light; 1 finger tan-cream head; retention was okay. Head eventually turned into a thin bubbly surface. A little bit of lace left on the glass.

S-Grains, dark malt, mocha, and a little hop aroma.

T-Mocha, black chocolate, and black licorice. The aftertaste was dry and bitter, which is what I like in my schwarzbiers. It was sweet up front and bitter in the back. A little metallic at times, but it didn't wreck the whole experience. The beer overall was easy to drink and quite smooth.

M-On the lighter side, which made it sessionable. Moderate amount of carbonation. A creamy feel once the beer warmed a bit. It really showed that it's a lager.

Overall, I'd drink this again. I really thought it was quite mellow and easy to drink. It is a great substitute for those who like dark beers, but have yet to develop their tastes for strong dark beers. I love stouts and porters, so I am happy to have this schwarzbier imported from Germany into China. To find a stout or porter in Northeast China would be a rare find, so this one does the trick. Cheers!
