We were traveling through the area and decided to take in an evening Mud Hens game. Before the game, we visited this small brewery near the ballpark. Dark, with tall ceilings and arched beams, the name fits the decor. The beer was excellent. I had a wonderful Vienna Lager, but all the beers were spot on. The service was okay, but the food was dust pizza. Unfortunately the pizza seemed like microwave or very poorly made product. All in all, though, this was with the visit, but go for the beer.

The brewery is located in a old building located in the near downtown area of Toledo....very refreshing from the typical warehouse/industrial feel of most breweries. Was a little on the smaller side but had a number of seats at the bar and table surrounding the space. The quality of the beer was very good and the pretzel we tried was fantastic. The service was great and attentive. There was plenty to choose from on both the beer and food menu.

Great beers in an interesting building in downtown Toledo. Especially enjoyable if you like Belgian beers. The service was a little unattentive at times, I don't think I was the only one who experienced this while I was there.

We stopped in for a beer after lunch at another place local. We plan on coming back. After telling the server my preferences, he recommended a Baltic porter that was very good. My wife had a Scotch ale that was good also. The building looks to be a remodeled old storefront. A lot of brick architecture keeping with the abbey feeling of a cloister. arched walls everywhere. A long bar and hardwood floors.

Cavernous downtown beer haunt. Good amount of beer choices and some nice guest taps as well. If you're in Downtown Toledo, it's worth a stop for sure.

This place has quickly become of the city's favorites. It took a little time to get it all together, but I think it's there now.
First of all, it's beautiful, from the brick walls and ceilings (complete with archways) to the wood floors and seating to the bar, sort of "industrial meets rustic meets modern", to the hand-drawn and painted mural stretching the entire length of the left wall. It's inside a former warehouse directly in Toledo's old warehouse district at Monroe and Erie.
As for the beer: Black Cloister keeps 6-8 of its own beers on tap at all times, and it serves some spectacular craft beers from national breweries on its guest taps. These taps always include at least one cider, one mead, and even a kombucha from a local kombucha brewer.
The pizza is good, and that's the majority of the food available now. It's certainly worth trying for dinner, and there's a dessert pizza as well.
Service is extremely dichotomous; it may be excellent one night and you may wait nearly an hour for service another. The bartenders know their stuff, though, and it's been good more often than bad. Generally, the staff will take the time to talk to you while still managing the bar and tables.
Whether specifically for great beer, supporting local business, for dinner and drinks (did I mention the higher-end liquors served mainly as tasters / apertifs?), this place is at the top of the list.

Good beer, especially for such a young brewery, but the best part about this hub is the people. Everyone, staff and other customers, was extremely friendly and personable. They gave us a tour without us asking, and emphasized their focus on Beer and people repeatedly. The vibe is set so that people will talk to one another and socialize rather than watching tv. Food options would have been nice, but we will definitely be coming back and following the progress of this promising brewery.

Hated the taproom, spooky like a funeral parlor. Beer was decent to good, our barmaid was knowledgeable and excellent. Tap selections were varied and decent - no flights though.

checked this place out and tried a flight of beers. cool building, they did a nice job with the interior space. they had a wide variety of beers - leaning towards Belgian but also American styles. beer I had was high quality except for one exception. the bartenders were friendly and service was good.
