The name is accurate: these guys are truly the beer kings of Amsterdam. They have a diverse selection from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and a few other assorted places such as Denmark and Japan.

If anyone wants to help me convince these guys to start stocking some nice Canadian beers, though, then that would make it perfect.

Excellent selection of cantillon, and even some surprising American beers here.

There are beer stores and then there are beer stores. Bierkoning falls into the latter category.

Like most things in Amsterdam, this store is tucked away in a narrow street and is unassuming. The store is right on Paleistraat, which is one of the central streets running directly from downtown by the Hauptbonhoff. As a matter of fact, this store is very centrally located... it's close to many of the museums, the Vondelpark, the Blumenmarkt, and the Leidseplein.

The quality is unbelievable. When I was there, I'd say I didn't recognize almost one-third of the beers they carried. And they don't stock things just to stock things. The owner and managers are constantly scouring the market for the best brews - macro or micro - or somewhere in between. The manager I talked to was a beer enthusiast and a brewer himself, and so he was inclined to talk about beer and why he carries the brands he chooses.

Also, for you brewers out there - there is an international brewer's guestbook. As to sign it - it's pretty amazing. It has been signed by brewers from all over the world who visited this place, and there were hundreds of signatures and entries. It was fun just to see how many American brewmasters made it to this store.

I have to give this place 5.0 across all categories. If you're in Amsterdam and not too stoned to move, you have to check this place out.

Stumbled across this place a few years ago, didn't realise at the time what I had found but it was my first experience of Cantillon and Girardin. It just gets better everytime I go.

Most recent visit a week ago, its a tiny little place just off Dam Square, lots of crates on the pavement outside, and the place is filled to the ceiling with beer. Three little levels with the lambics hidden under the stairs, with its cramped nature, steep stairs, wooden floors, its thoroughly Amsterdonian.

As for the beers - Most belgiums, Westvleteren 6, 8 & 12 available, big variety of lambics, good selection of UK, Scandanavian and US beers including Russian River - Pliny the Elder for 15 euros and a huge selection of Dutch.

What this place is really characterised by is the staff who are always approachable, enthusiastic and willing to help. I asked for a couple of typical US IPAs and got into a enlightening discussion on the merits of UK, Belgium and US styles. Anyway I ended up with a couple of cheap ones - Raging Bitch and Anderson Valley Imperial - under 3 euros each as well as Westvleteren 12, Drie fontenien gueze and Cantillon kriek which were a litle more expensive.

In summary, this is, without doubt, the finest beer shop I have visited.

What more could you want? They have an amazing selection of glassware, with probably over a hundred types. Many, many dutch beers not sold elsewhere. An Amazing selection of belgian ale, with several hundred types. Then, even more and more beers from around the world. I've even heard that they have sold Kaggen in the past. Sheesh, I wish I would have been there. Westvleteren is available. There is no doubt in my mind that this is one of if not the best beer shop in the world. I've been here a couple times and have always received great service. This is quite a place.

ok this is my 2nd place I hit when i get off the train from the airport. Its just beer lovers heaven if you like dutch and Belgian beer. otherwise stay away, and leave it to us that love Belgian beer. Yes they have aged westy upstairs usually, its not cheap but hey its worth it. This place has got the best selection and service in Amsterdam period. If you visit Amsterdam and your a beer lover this is a MUST visit otherwise, why would you reading this? he-he did I mention I love this place. Been here like 100 times now and that NOT a joke. Don't go in stoned, its best to have lots of time and cash and a wheeled vehicle of some kind. Sure the AGED westvleteren was 12 euro and higher but ITS worth every penny.

Absolutely deserving of its 100 rating. Best bottle shop I've ever been to - I'm sure there are comparable places in the States, but coming from the UK this place was a miracle.

Things that I was particularly excited to find:

Plead the 5th
Uerige Doppelsticke (after failing to find this in Germany, I never thought I'd stumble on it in Amsterdam)
Incredible selection of de Molen (maybe 30 different beers)
And large quantities of two of my favourite Christmas beers: Stille Nacht and Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche
Huge selection of glasses

Prices were generally fair, though I wasn't planning on shelling out €99 for Stille Nacht Reserva. I also felt the Westys were comparatively overpriced - I remember in Bruges 12 was priced at around €10, so €15.90 for each of them seemed a bit steep.

One of the guys working there was really helpful and took me round the shop in hunt of smoked beers - came out with some good suggestions, including a number from de Molen along with some other Dutch breweries I hadn't come across before.

I went late afternoon on a Saturday and the shop was unsurprisingly packed in the run-up to Christmas - probably best to go in the morning if you can - it's a narrow shop which makes it slightly stressful when it's packed with customers.

Its located in the heart of Amsterdam not far from Dam Square. Its bewen around about 30 years. One of the best selections of European beer anywhere. About 1500 at last count. No need to say more.

Totally awesome! If you are ever in Amsterdam you need to visit De BierKoning. Look it up on the web. Their beer selection is fantastic, from Dutch, German, Belgian, English, Scotish, Irish, Czech, Polish, US craft beers, Danish, Norwegian, etc. Anyway you look at it you will not be disappointed. Plus, the staff are extremely knowledgable on their beers and they even brew beer themselves, the brand named Tasty Lady, which is awesome as well. If you are looking for Westvletern 12, yes they have it too! I get to Amsterdam at least 3+ times a year and I always stop in to De BierKoning! It is almost like family! Cheers!

While I was expecting a great selection of beers from the Netherlands, they had so much more, from seasonal Cantillon, to stouts from The Bruery . Huge selection and friendly service. They even do trade,s from what the worker told me!

De Bierkoning is definitely my go-to place for rare or unusual beers, or even just for trying something new. As others have said, it's located right off the Dam, which makes it very accessible and in a very nice area of town.

Atmosphere in the shop is definitely nice, with a kind of old-fashioned style interior. The shop is, however, very cramped and can be difficult to maneuver around in if anyone else is present. The selection is quite impressive though, and I feel that that makes up for it. Their boast of 1000 beers on stock seems pretty accurate, as the whole store is stocked from floor to ceiling essentially with beers from around the world. These are also ordered by country, making it easier to make a selection. There seems to be plenty of rare and just generally high quality brews here, ranging from fairly normally priced, but quality beers, up to the higher end expensive and hard to find stuff. Also a fantastic selection of glassware that spans an entire wall, so pretty much anything you could need in that department is covered as well.
Staff are always willing to help and are very knowledgeable about the beers they carry and beer culture.

This, with the huge selection and easy accessibility, make it an excellent choice for anyone looking for a shop in the Netherlands

Went here on my recent trip to Amsterdam, had an absolutely fantastic time shopping here and picked up a bunch of rare de moulen beers. they had a ton of cantillon, drie fontaine etc. Highly recommend if your in amsterdam and looking for great craft beer. They had much better pricing than the cracked kettle as well. They also were a lot friendlier. They had 2 huge levels of beers and had pretty much all the major belgian and dutch beers that you could want.

It was somewhat hard to find the shop though as their sign isn't terribly big.

Been to Amsterdam twice this year, about 12 days total. Not one went by without a stop at De Bierkoning. Everything from Westy 12, 10 and 8 to a range of Cantillon (scored two 50N/40E there for $30 Euro) and other crucial breweries like Brouwerij de Molen to name a few. Also have an impressive selection of U.S. craft beers, scored a PtE there that was two weeks old. If you are in Amsterdam this is a must.

And once you're done at De Bierkoning hit Beer Temple around the corner.
