Notes: Two Row, crystal and Munich malts create the base for the big flavors of chocolate and black malt to build upon. The chocolate and coffee flavor and aroma of the malts are highlighted nicely by the addition of black strap molasses in the boil. Goldings and Fuggle hops provide refined earthy bitterness that compliments the roasty flavors of the malt nicely.

On draft at the Waikiki location. part of a flight of four. Enjoyable brew. Roasty malty flavor, thin body, nice scent and easy to drink, like all Waikiki Brews.

September 15th, 2015 - I've never seen a beer so explicitly advertise the black strap molasses content in their brew but I think it conjures a neat effect. There's a good malty base in the aroma, and that depth makes this smell more like a stout than a porter. The body is thinner like a traditional porter though, and gives a long lingering cocoa aftertaste. Otherwise the taste is somewhat standard with a bit of chalkiness. But an enjoyable brew after a long and sandy day.

Smell of dark chocolate
Dark black color
Medium-heavy mouthfeel

Tastes of bitter chocolate, burnt molasses
Overall not for me. I like smoother porters and this isn't it. Wouldn't buy again.

this is pretty awesome stuff. not sure how one could fully appreciate it without a real familiarity with this molasses itself, its so distinct, and it comes through wonderfully in the beer. the beauty of it is that it never gets too sweet despite having a really pronounced black strap molasses flavor. i think its because there are enough solids or impurities in the molasses that it is not 100% fermentable, like the difference between refined and raw honey in beer, or grade A compared to lower graded maple syrup. anyway, its awesome with the coffee notes from the roast of the malt and the heavy caramelization of the cane sugar. really unique, i have not had a beer like this before. i reckon its a touch thin for what it is, a little more structure would really serve to extend this and make it last, but as it is, its still pretty awesome. great depth of flavor, i am surprised this beer doesnt generate a little but more hype. my first beer from waikiki, but it has me intrigued to try some more! absolutely delicious porter.

On tap at Ka'anapali Grille And Tap Room in Lahaina, HI.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, molasses, and slight smoke aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa powder, burnt molasses, earth, and char flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer with nice cocoa and molasses aromas, but the taste is a bit too burnt to me.

Serving type: on tap.
