Part of a beautiful building that I am not sure what is going to be the end result. A hotel, business offices, other use? Has a 70s basement lounge feel to it with the low lighting and vinyl upholstery. I was ignored for a long time despite being one of three customers in the place. It was funny because the other couple were trying to get the bartender to acknowledge me. But he served me eventually and warmed up to me. Might have to be a regular or be a chick to get prompt service here. Seemed to be a geezer hangout during the afternoon and happy hour as I was surrounded by pensioners when I returned from the restroom. Good selection of beers available. I liked that it was mostly low ABV. The mild was not lacking in flavor but lacked in execution as it was very astringent in the finish that would not make this a sessionable ale. The other beers I had were better but they were hoppier and higher ABV so easier to hide flaws.. It is worth a visit despite the tepid service and old people aroma that permeates the interior.

This brewery was part of a UP brewery weekend (Marquette area) and was the gem of the bunch. It's in the lower level of a beautiful looking building; it was a little hard to find because apparently the Taproom sign had blown off in a wind storm. Regardless we found it and drinking ensued. It's a semi-dark, smallish space and it almost felt like being in a secret hideout. They had a popcorn machine for munching and a robust list of beers that really ran the range of styles; a NE IPA, Milk Stout, Belgian, Light Lager, etc. All the beers were well made and a couple stood out as really excellent. The beer that stood out the most was called Storm the Castle, which was a bourbon barrel aged Wee Heavy. One of the better BBA beers that I've had from any brewery. They sold cans to go (16oz for $8) and I grabbed a couple to take home with me.

Can't say how busy the place gets as we were there early on a Saturday afternoon. A few locals popped in an out and were very friendly with us; guess it was pretty obvious we weren't from the area. The person tending the bar was a little chilly to us at first; certainly did not ignore us or act rude, but after hanging out for awhile having a few flights and pints of our favourites, they joined in with chatting us up. I look forward to a future visit back to this brewery as it really stood out as a place that has it figured out for being fairly young.

This was stop #9 on a 6-day pub crawl that would take my wife and me to the Brewers Guild UP Beer Fest and back. This pub is located in the lower level of The Mather Inn, which has a street-side entry due to the down sloping of the street, and has been open for just a few months. The interior makes me think of an English pub for some reason, and I like this vibe.

We ordered a sampler flight of all 7 of the beers that were available (they were out of their IPA which is the best selling beer). Their beer styles are all over the place with a couple of Belgians, a milk stout, an Irish stout and a smoked lager among them. All of them had an ABV of 3.9-5.9 so you can certainly have more than one beer here. We scored each beer so that our overall grade ended up as a B minus or a C plus. They all were brewed very well to style, although none of them stood out well beyond the others. Our only complaint was that the Belgian styles had too much banana/clove characteristic for our taste. It's a nice place and I hope to get back here someday.
