Allagash Saison AleAllagash Saison Ale

Brewed by:
Allagash Brewing Company
Maine, United States

Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Allagash Saison is our interpretation of a classic Belgian farmhouse style. It is a golden hued beer, brewed with a 2-Row blend, malted rye, oats and dark Belgian candi sugar. Saison is hopped with Tettnang, Bravo and Cascade hops. Fermented with a traditional saison yeast strain, Saison exhibits notes of spice and tropical fruit in the aroma. Citrus and a peppery spice dominate the flavor and make way for a pleasant malt character. Saison is full bodied with a remarkably dry finish.

Golden straw colored beer, evenly and softly hazy. Head is large, tight and soapy looking. Stringy lace squiggles hang around. Aroma is flowery, sweet, bubble gum, soft spice, smooth easy lemon. Fragrant, phenolic, soapy, generally happy and calming aromas. Taste is loaded with floral sweet softness as well. Light bitterness and fine, even carbonation stir things up. Slightly dry as well. Flavors are very well integrated together. Bubble gum, lemon candy, mild sprinkling of sugar cookie, rosy kind of floral. Very nice. I get sick of the various off versions of this style but Allagash hit it just right. They remind me that I do like Saisons.

Counter-pressure fill from Tasty Beverage

Hazy golden yellow under a decently high pure-white head. Aromas of fruity yeast esters, slight anise, flowers, hay, zesty citrus, peppery phenolics - basically a textbook, no-frills Saison aroma. Peppery, spicy citrus, lots of yeast, slight fruitiness, earthy hops. No added spices, no barrel aging, no Brett, Allagash just brews a standard Saison and lets the yeast do the talking. Quite dry, moderately carbonated, finishing with a mild tartness. Nice...

Had on-tap at Jack o the Wood Asheville. Served in a goblet.

A- Pours a dark golden color with a 1/2 inch white head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheer sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a jagged ring behind.

S- Classic saison aroma with some hay, lemon and some mild funk.

T- Not so classic in the flavor as there's a pronounced bubble gum flavor closer to a witbier or standard Belgian Pale. Very good but quite sweet. Also notes of banana and a bit of clove.

M- Somewhat bright and tingly. Medium carbonation with a lightish body.

O- Tasty if not a bit typical. A nice session saison that would really be a winner if the price was a bit lower.
