Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Allagash Saison is our interpretation of a classic Belgian farmhouse style. It is a golden hued beer, brewed with a 2-Row blend, malted rye, oats and dark Belgian candi sugar. Saison is hopped with Tettnang, Bravo and Cascade hops. Fermented with a traditional saison yeast strain, Saison exhibits notes of spice and tropical fruit in the aroma. Citrus and a peppery spice dominate the flavor and make way for a pleasant malt character. Saison is full bodied with a remarkably dry finish.

Saisons are one of the more difficult beer styles to review for me. They're intrinsically more nuanced and require more contemplation than IPAs and stouts and the like.

This beer does not have much in the way of head to speak of. There was a finger upon the initial pour but it faded away quickly leaving nary a trace (or a lace) behind. Carbonation is readily apparent both in the way this prickles the tongue and just by gazing at the sides of my glass.

Aromas are grassy with some lightly tropical notes. I'm getting tree fruits here. Lemon, some lime and something else I can't seem to pin down. I get a nice dry malt base in the flavor and mouthfeel. Something sort of crackery, maybe Pilsner malt? There's also just a very light pepper note, black pepper like; nothing with a hot spice character to it. The tasting notes say rye so that would explain it. I am clearly not a cicerone.

In the finish I get almost a grape like tannic quality that dries my tongue and makes me reach for the glass again. I see what you're doing there Allagash and your tricks WILL work on me. I guess o wouldn't put this in the world class categories of saisons but I will say this, I'm not turning a glass down anytime I can get a fill.

Orange in colo . Big frothy head
Smell of yeast. Orange. Orange peel. Cracker. The taste is the same as the smell. Fruity yeast. Feel is light. Effervescent.

Pours a hazy, even slightly cloudy straw color with lots of carbonation and a creamy white head. Lots of lace.
The aroma is citrus and tropical fruit, hay, spice and funk.
Tasty brew with a shot of bitterness and funk followed by juicy citrus and tropical fruits with a hit of crisp spice.
A light lingering bitter note and a dry, refreshing finish.
Mouthfeel is medium and bubbly.
Quite good.

Saison pours clear, small white head. Has the nose and aroma of a European farmyard ale, taste is a bit light and subdued.. Decent but not outstanding (but pretty darn close)

DATE TASTED: December 11, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: La fin du Monde tulip... OCCASION: prepping for our first Quiz Bowl competition at Leonia tomorrow... APPEARANCE: spritzy, quite hazy sallow golden body; three-finger head slips quickly into a pillowy, single-finger snow-white crown of varying thickness; artistic rings form as lacing as the glass drains... AROMA: beautiful candied sugars allure from the start; lemon, mango and pepper add to the invitation; slight clove and banana suggests yeasty funk that straddles the weizen arena... PALATE: textured, medium-bodied, frothy and active early; grainy but dry at the finish, as expected--quite drinkable... TASTE: pepper and clove work early and satisfy; the mango and lemon are bright and clear, flirting with the bitterness of an IPA but keeping with the funky weizen qualities... OVERALL: a fresh, full-flavored experience, with a light malt profile that allows for an easy-drinking, sessionable ale....

Yellow, yeasty, very little head. Slightly thin tasting, spicy. Not bad, not their best.
