A dark sour, aged for 2 years in oak and an additional 2 years in stainless with 1.2 lbs of local currants per gallon. Currant Affair had a mixed fermentation with Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus and a traditional ale yeast. Deep red with raisin, chocolate and sour cherries in the aroma, it’s tart and spicy with complex flavors of stone fruit and brown sugar. Look for this on draft at a specialty event near you.

A: Sour cherries coupled with raisins mixed with a woody aroma. However, aroma from currants isn’t very noticeable.
A: Deep brown with a reddish hue, coupled with a light thin ring of head.
T: Initial currant berry flavor, gives way to sharp sourness, slight spice and some oak presence.
M: medium bodied with light carbonation. The beer shows some alcoholic warmth and finishes a little boozy.
O: Solid, but not as tasty as some of Allagash’s other offerings. The aroma lacked any noticeable currents and the sour flavors were a bit sharp.

Dark sour. Smell is awful. Very medicinal. Spice and funk. Brett funk. Very medicinal. Cherry. Dark fruits. Just not enjoyable or drinking. I couldn't drink more than a few ounces. Where are the currants?

Vermont Brewfest. Dark copper. Almost plummy. Aroma is of sweet currants. Very natural smelling. It doesn't smell all too sour. Then you take a sip and your tongue takes a violent pounding from the acidic sourness. The initial flavor is of currant, then a cataclysmic sourness sets in. So sour. Reminds me of the blue veins in Stilton; nearly medicinal. Puckering. I enjoyed the dichotomy of the nose and flavor. They barely get along. Allagash sours are always powerful. They have the demonic Brett strain. I enjoyed it just as much as many of their sour beers.

Enjoyed this the day after the Allagash event at the Armsby Abbey. Reviewed from notes.
A - Poured into a standard tulip a clearish chestnut hue with a light thin head that fades to leave thin wisps.
S - Aromas of some faint generic sweetness. Not getting much currants at all really. I get some light funk, but it's all rather subtle.
T - Taste is a little bit of honey, light barrel, some faint alcohol, sweet funk, light cherry notes, vanilla. I get no currant on the taste.
M - Mouthfeel is on the boozier side, rather flemmy finish.
O - Overall this beer was surprisingly hot given it's ABV. The lack of currants and the rather unpleasant aftertaste/feel really hindered this one.
