Split with JLindros. Bottle date 11/19/15.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great a nice crystal clear honey hue with a thin white head that fades to leave light wisps.

S - Aromas of sour malts, tart Flanders notes, cherries, night brett notes, pleasant tartness. Nicely aromatic.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with bright cherries and Flanders notes, light caramel. Good funk and really bid tartness, almost vinegar like.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, crisp, very flemmy finish.

O - Overall this was a very solid Flanders style beer from Allagash. Excellent funk notes as well.

Taste brings nice sourness, good sour bacteria funk, flemmy acidity, nice oaky barrel, little fruity funk, again nice FLanders funk and acidity, touch bready malt on the background

Mouth is med bod, quite flemmy, decent fluffy carb, quite acidic

Overall very nice, great acidity and funk, nice barrel, very enjoyable

Haven't run into a wild ale from Allagash that doesn't make me take pause and savor each sip, and Helena is no different. Bottled on Sept 2016, picked up from the brewery in Dec 2016, enjoyed six weeks later after appropriate storage. The aroma of green apple, sour apple, tart fruit and must bursts forth from under the cork. Pours a lively reddish and burnt-orange hue with bubbles streaming up the glass; like a hyperactive Flemish Red. The effervescence hits your lips as you tilt the grass, complementing the aromas in ensuring that your palate is awake. Taste is a beautiful balance of tart, sweet and sour with a lingering mustiness that closes the sip - sour apple, tart berries, fruit-sweetness, oak and a caramel malt. Finishes with a crisp pop and a lingering sourness. Beautiful beer.

The label describes Helena as modeled after a traditional Flemish Red, and the intense yet balanced tartness lives up to the comparison. Helena is dryer and more effervescent than the handful of Flemish Red's I've had; more of a tart apple than a balsamic. The time in oak barrels adds a nice balance... Hm, if I heard a beer described as flavors of sour apple and oak, I would not be expecting the flavor profile of Helena... Light, crisp, and dry. I love Flemish sours so I was predisposed to enjoy this one; but this ranks very high among the Allagash sours I've had, which are some of the best sours I've had. Highly recommended, I wish I had purchased more!

375 mL bottle. Orange amber body. Smell is intensely acidic. Oak. Green apples. Caramel malt. Tastes pretty sour. Green apple tartness and apple sweetness at the same time. Oak. Medium body. Not that enthused by this.
